Got my cast off today after 2 months in plaster :niceone:
Wrist is half the size it used to be and in need of a tan. Still quite sore but it hasn't fully healed and has been held in that position for 2 months so probably just in need of some movement.
Anyway was wondering if anyone has had this injury and if it has caused problems after fixed. I would be keen to get a cti wrist brace but jesus christ they are expensive. Gonna try get ACC to buy me one along with a shoulder brace.
Need to prevent this happening agin as don't want to have bone grafts etc + work will not be pleased.
Experiences?

So far so good, Hence why I want to prevent it happening again.
I think it will take some time to come right.......

Did mine 2.5 years ago, not right yet. On the plus side, I can tell when it's going to rain.

Would recommend going to a hand physio ... specialises in dealing with those injuries and working you up till you are ok to go and do it again.

Had a Colles fracture. Just go to physio to get rehab and exercise tips. Only took a month to get right.
Funny thing is I have hair loss where the break was and 20 years later still no problems.

Yup did mine when I was 16, unfortunately at first they xray'd it and said it wasn't fractured and left it. Then after the swelling had gone down and it was still weak and painful they looked at the original Xray and said it had actually fractured :bash:promptly popped me into cast...of course given the delay it couldn't be set at the right angle so I suffer with it in Winter. :cold:

Scaphoid never comes completely right. Very poor blood supply. I did mine in 1989 I think and it is still a pain. It does impact on wrist movement and strength, but the effects aren't that noticeable until you get through your most vital years and begin your decline.

Did mine 12 years ago and no grief since. I'm up to about 12 broken bones now - it's the neck and back fractures that give me troubles...

managed to break mine going up an escalator about 10 years ago. It does get a bit achey in winter, but nothing too bad. Wierdest thing is that part of my wrist is still kinda numb...

and they work!
my physio had me in a cast for 3 weeks after hurting my wrist/nerves in my left hand and now i have a brace with2 metal plates holding my hand
if you want a good physio and if ACC is already covering your injury it should be free
pm me for the number if you want it (west auckland by the way)

I'm lucky mine doesn't give me grief any longer, considering it was my right scaphoid that i did.

Coming out of a serious wrist injury myself although not the scaphoid, all I can say is keep at it with the physio, I have been wearing progressive splints at night which has helped alot.
You were lucky to only be in cast for 2 months I have heard of people being in cast for much much longer with that injury, Did you get a screw in yours?
I have been trying to get a cti wrist brace through acc myself but have hit a brick wall, seems my specialist thinks my injured wrist should now be just as strong as my good one so it seems I will have to test his theory.
Good luck with your recovery regards QWA.

Early '80s broke my right scaphoid. Was in plaster for 7 months. Being young and even stupider I never gave it a proper chance to heal and in the end they gave up. It's hurt a bit ever since and then a few years back I fell off and gave it a good knock again. I now have what they call an unjoined fracture and the ligament that joins it to the next bone across in the wrist is damaged (over time) and is now noticeably weaker than left side. It hurts most of the time and suddden moves are best avoided. A not-too-hard knock is enough to bring tears to the eyes.
Advice - take the time now and make sure it heals as well as is possible.

Yup broke my right one and 3 other hand bones in May. As Nasty said, I went to a specialist Hand Physio who was fantastic! I have a slight weakness but no pain ... I don't usually go with stuuf that requires a fuss but I did keep up the physio and it's all better now.
O think scaphoids are the "bikers injury" because you've got your thumb hooked around the grip when you hit stuff

Time to get that strength and muscle mass back. Start jacking now.

Did mine in 1983 and never stopped riding my XR 200. Had to get a replacement cast as the break was on my clutch hand. No problems whatsoever, but I guess it helped that I was only 18.

You should get a job as a mechanic, cos every time I work lift the hood I drop screws in the smallest gaps possible and can never get them out :bash:

Smashed mine up pretty thoughroughly back in May.
My suggestion is to get cracking on increasing flexibility asap
Work at it or you will loose movement.

Got my cast off today after 2 months in plaster :niceone:
Same amount of time I was in plaster for

It took most of the day that I came out of plaster before I had any movement in it
Anyway was wondering if anyone has had this injury and if it has caused problems after fixed.
I know about 6-7 people who have had this injury and only a couple have had a complete recovery

So far my experience has been good, I was in plaster the morning after it happened for 8 weeks, within another 8 weeks I had 100% strength and movement back and have had no ill effects at all (3 years later)

I was in a full arm cast for 9 weeks after breaking my wrist and tearing a ligament (full arm with a twisted the wrist to force the bone in to stop it from popping out).
Just got out of it 2, maybe 3 weeks ago. Unfortunately my doctor wasn't a fan of physio so he wouldn't subscribe it to me so i've been attempting my best at my own recovery. I just gained full use of my elbow yesterday, I can move my wrist up and down maybe 80% of the way, gained some strength back in the arm due to house moving and carrying furniture but I can't twist my wrist at all really. Bit of a bummer but it'll come in time..
Bloody doctors..
