Fuck!

So I just found out that my old bike was never de registered after I got written off. My brother kindly had the plates in storage and, as I was a bit bent in the head at the time, never thought to follow up on it.

Just found them yesterday and I'm guess there's gonna be a big pissold fine in it for me.

Anyone know what the deal is / what I need to do to get it cancelled and hopefully pay as little money as possible?

If it is written off by insurance, it should have been deregistered by now if you had signed the release papers

It will have been automatically dereigsitered after two years (or will be ). In theory (and law) you should hand the plates in. In practice there's a shit load of people don't . Dunno what happens if you do, but me, I'd stick them in a dark corner and forget about it.

I know lots of people who keep their old plates. Many people, when going to sell the car/bike, write in and say `plates fell off -- need a new set'. $20 or so for a new set, keep the old ones.

If they come after you for money (continuous vehicle registration blah blah)
Hand the plates in. If they still come after you (via Baycorp) tell them to stick it!:motu:

I had this issue just last week - I had left the plates on one of my old cars....so it looked like a real car, with no plates it would of been stripped or smashed up.The car was on my daughters vacant section, and the plates were stolen....and I got a ticket for a car parked in Hamilton with no rego or WoF.The charge was dropped after we explained the plate was dead for 2 years, and the car didn't match the vehicle for the plate. Was a bit worried about the $400 fine for a couple of days though.....
