Would like to join u guys for the trip as I am new on this blog and in NZ but I'm a L-plate rider so max speed 70kph, 3 more months to go..!! Enjoy !!!!
Nagash
17th March 2008, 16:16
There's a couple other L platers coming too. It's all good,
You should haul your way with us anyway.
If you read back a few pages the general Police consensus is that doing 100km/h on an L plate is all good aslong as you're being sensible about it.
Don't write yourself off just yet man.

Take a look at the Whangarei website, (they have their own website..) there's a whole list of back packers, camp grounds, hotels, motels, hovels etc. etc.
Linky (http://www.whangareinz.com/accommodation/browse/?superCategoryID=11)
Anything there should be alright.
Haha, this one's on a farm! The Coast Road Farm BBH Backpackers Hostel. They offer free milk, sounds like fun to me.

Have fun Raj.

Ur lookin good mate, ur already doing better than me when I was where you are. I love riding with u guys because you all have such nice attitudes. If I had posted the same comment in another thread it would have been ripped to shreads, spat on mocked and red repped. Some from people who havent even met me or know how conservative I am on the road. Have a safe fun as trip.:apint:

Riding boots look just AWESOME with combat pants, but turn into gum boots when you wear shorts :pinch:
Meh, I'l chuck them in if they fit, if not then the flip-flops come out.

I will be bringing my little rg toolkit along with a few spare plugs and a ratchet with extension and 10 12 14 mm sockets and a spark plug socket in case someone somehow breaks their bike lol. Toto you have the puncture repair kits and first aid kit. If you can get ej's puncture kit I can carry that. Yo badger you bringing the jerry can? The rg eats through petrol so I WILL be filling up every 200 k's lol. Mobile phone chargers are a good idea, cos if your phone dies and you get stuck eh. since we will be riding most of the time I'm bringing light clothes. One pair of shorts, one t shirt some socks and some undies. Water, some snacks and some jandals. Two one litre bottles of two stroke oil too. Any other two strokers coming, if so do that and bring two one litre bottles of oil. So on the first day we are hoping to cover roughly 400km, not bad. A nice day ride with stops to sight see, take a leak and eat. I'll be cruising at the back of the pack most likely so if any super super fresh riders are coming I am happy to cruise with you guys. Who is tec toto? When we meet at shell westgate on friday we can exchange numbers and stuff. Or if your keen we can meet on thursday and discuss stuff and have a catch up. Far out who knew I could be so responsible, i'll have to make up for it by pulling a stunt, like jumping the rg over a car or something lol jokes.

I'll have a puncture kit , who else has got one ? First aid will stay with me also cos it hapened that I will have heaps of space in the backpack. TEC will be decided on the in shell westgate. Charger is probably a good idea too, thanks drider87. I'll get muesli bars with me - light, tasty and filling
Can you people who are coming to the tour PM me your Cellphone numbers together with your real name... it will save us some time on friday morning.

So far we have 13 sure people registered (the other 2 are not coming but can not sign off) and I have reserved 15 places so we have 2 spare. You have a chance. Let me know when you know if you are joining us. hope you make it.
P.s If any of yall wants to talk what a great time we are going to have on the tour you can come to ATNR and we can talk there and in bar africa afterwords. I would have just picked the bike from service so it would be nice to go for a spin on thursday night :)

i'll also have a modest toolkit on board and be waaayyyy out the back of the pack, so if anyone has any troubles just flag me down! :D
I also reckon it'd be a good idea for EVERYONE on the ride to write their cell #s down on a list, just in case. Leave it with Toto or somethin...
I dont mind going TEC if needed, or me and Chocco can switch-hit it, whatever :) You're more than welcome to hang out at the back with us Drider, ridden with you once before when you were pretty fresh, so keen to see how you've improved :niceone:
I think i will likely bring the jerrycan, just depends if i can fit it in the saddlebags :) there's quite a few of us with short tanks ranges, but other than the jaunt to the cape i cant see them being a problem :)

Full tank... Hmm I think it'll last around 230km* while cruising at 100kph
but try to refil when you reach around 200kph.
P.S. You do know that the reserve tank is like 1/5 of the tank right? thats like extra 40-50kms. Alot :)

lol I should know, I work at a BP station. (well I don't know)
However, I never tried 98 on the FXR. I heard 98 gives much more milage than the 91s
Decrease in speed? I don't think so... Well I bet low compression decreases speed (which my bike is suffering from atm). lol

Hi Guys I see you are coming up this way for Easter
Thought I can help with some local knowledge
First I have attached a map showing Mangakahia Road (Twin Bridges) there have been lots of road works on this road but should be about done.
Gas Fill up at Dargaville and that will get you thought to Kaikohe there is gas in between but expensive.
Up to Cape Reinga the last gas is currently at the Mobil at Houhora (No gas currently at Waitiki Landing) it’s about 240km return to Kaitaia so fill up there.
It’s a great sealed road up to Waitiki Landing so I would suggest that those not wanting to do the last 20 odd kms of gravel just wait there, and ride back down with the rest of the group, they have a pool table etc.
Roads are in excellent condition not many road works and if you see a sign saying uneven surface Slow Down because it will be real bad!!!
Have fun and may even see you on some part of your ride.
Feel free to PM me if I can answer any other questions I travel the roads you are taking weekly so happy to help where I can

I'll do it for yah,
Mapsanji should be alright to come, Tauranga is real easy to get to from Auckland and vice versa.. just a couple of hours up State highway 2, not particularly exciting but it's the fastest way. You'll be having a real early morning mate, and good luck trying to find a particular petrol station in another city..
PM me your mobile number and if you get lost in anyway i'll come out and find you if you wish.

It's gonna be my first trip ever .... so yeah count me in. Bit warried about Aukl
I'v been there a few times and I got to leave early friday morning from Tauranga..!!
I'm very happy you have decided to join us.
I'm not sure its a good idea to do the whole trip from tauranga to auckland and then all the way up in one day. Isnt there a way to come to auckland on thursday and sleep the night and leave on friday morning ???
I'm genuanly worried that you may end up in an accident resulting from being tired.

HTFU Tod, he'll be alright.
SH2 is really piss easy, just a straight road for 200 km's, he'll be fine.
Specially in a hyo-bag! Haha

Easy as pie to find the station coming from south.
Keep on the motorway til you hit spaghetti junction, follow the signs to the north-western, go to the end (T-intersection, you literally run out of motorway)
Go left at the T, the shell is about 100-200m up that road on the left hand side, cant miss it! :niceone:

Thought I can help with some local knowledge
Cheers for the mate, Norfland hard! :punk:
How are the roads from Kaitaia to the cape? (or at least to the gravel bit) 240ks will be pushin the limits of some of the bikes if it's a bit slow/windy i think. Hoping to carry a jerrycan just in case tho

The road is "QUICK" sweeping corners and a few long straights. just stay to the right the logging trucks have made the inside lumpy in places,
Top of your gas in Houhora Mobil on the way up and you will make it back real easy.
No bling required, just hoping to make the ride more enjoyable for those that attend.

1. Dont rely on the fuel station @ Waitiki

Mine did this for a bit; Does is seem to be dripping from behind the actual engine? (e.g away from the engine; closer to the back wheel.) For me a small amount of oil was dripping out of the air filter (who knows why?) just unscrew the side and get rid of some of the excess and it should stop (did for me!). Worth a look see if nothing else.

Not sure on what style filter the gn's use, but if they us a foam filter then air filter oil is used to catch the dirt so it doesn't pass through the filter, that could have been what was dripping out of your air box. Was the oil blue and a little bit sticky?

Gn's use a wet filter (foam one) and I think it uses the same oil as the engine (?). It's never said to put special oil in, it's same colour as the fresh engine oil I use and there are wee tubes going to the engine. (hence my conclusion)
Anyway; look in the air filter, mine had quite a bit of oil pooled in the bottom (has a wee reservoir which I left alone) and get rid of some (if it looks like there is too much),it might stop.

I'm actually buggered if i know exactly where it's coming from, seems to be a light coat over a few areas, but no major source. Will give it a proper clean and detective look-over at some stage. Might have undertightened the sump plug at her last change maybe.

I get that if I use the brake alot in the wet - I asked at the shop to look at it the next day and they told me its normal under heavy braking. What you smell is most probably the dirt and dust being burned in the friction of the pads. It usually smells untill it burns off and then its no problem untill the next time it builds up. I was told its kinda a natural thing. You have a look at the pads just in case. how many Ks on your bike so far badger ?

Even the fairing removing I found out by accident - someone asked me - "have you taken your fairings off and cleaned it from the inside ? "

Whhat I do know dou is that the first time I did it , I had my bin, and since then I've done it atleast 13 times (from memory) and I really like this road. Okay so I'm all packed up. I'll bringing these tools so if it's not there bring it guys, just in case badgers engine falls out or something needs tightening. One adjustable wrench, ratchet with extension and 10 12 14 mm sockets and a sprk plug socket. Full metric allen key sets and a full phillips screwdriver head set with mini torque driver. Also will be bringing two spare spark plugs. Sounds like a lot but doesn't weigh much lol. As for lane splitting, um I'm not much of a fan of lane splitting so can we try not too haha, cruise and enjoy. The RG will be loaded. Splitting at 90ks will result in me not doing it and giving anyone who does a big boot up the arse when I catch up, except isaac cos he would smash me then hijack the rg, then I would be left to ride the ghey honda 900 haha jokes. Oh ill be at shell for eight cos i've never been there and might get lost on the way haha.

Batteries still buggered, probably worse. But I can bump start it by myself on flats! Yus! So I should be alright, i'll just be a little more knackered at the pub each night..
So if I don't turn my engine off, don't bitch..
And I was kidding about high speed lane splitting, we'll be alright just using our biker advantage to get into small gaps. Or we can just sit in one big group going 20k's up to the motorway! woo!
It's gonna be wicked, yet to pack.. but i'm eating chicken! That's gotta be good for something.

Hey Falks
We are having a blast up here in kaitaia.
The road to here was mint, nice long sweepers, almost no melted tar seal on the road. NO COPS. NO BINS.
Traffic to dargaville was a bit slow but we managed. Had Subway in dargaville and the road after that was just the best.
SH1 coming up to Kaitaia was just amazing. I got passed by Sinister^ on his fxr on a number of times on the twisties - man he can ride this thing.
We've seen wheelies m stoppies, and amazingly fast speeds ( not gonna go in details).
Motel in Kaitaia is top notch - thanks EJ - and we saw your name and I've also signed in :D
We stayed till now just telling bin stories , cop storries, war stories , discussing the ride , man these boys are awesome. Fun on the road and hularious off the road :)
Anyhow. we going to the cape tomorrow and gonna make some awesome pics to show off to all of you who didnt decide to join in.
O we also some of us ran over a big wood , a sparrow , and I hit an eagle which was just staring flight. Lucky there was no falls and at least the eagle was sweet as. Somehow feel sad about hitting it dou - it is just such an awesome beautiful bird.
That me for the night falks, be jelous :P

But just quickly (i.e. before i forget)...
Some of my favourite quotes/moments from the trip, think we might have a few new sigs outta them
Chocolate Wheels (to Badger): ":shit: Dude, i could swear i saw you with your knee down when i looked in my mirror!"
Drider (to Macstar): "You and your gay Honda, it wont survive the trip!" (Whilst Drider was in the middle re-bolting his subframe onto the bike)
Scraping pegs and boots through the uphill the twisties heading into Mangamuka (sp) forest.
Jacko2: "Damn you guys were throwing those little ginny's around!"
Badger (at Tane Mahuta): "Right, time to go take the worlds biggest piss on the worlds biggest Kauri tree..."
The GN drags, at prettymuch every opportunity. Including the full tuck and superman cape hi-vis vest
Chocolate Wheels: "I think i just set a new land-speed record for the GN! :D"
Pocket Cracker: (Fine young ladies walk past) "ooh! Yes please!" (Dirty looks) "What? i said please! :D"
The rather amusing sleep antics of fellow bikers, ranging from talking and moaning, to full blown violence against the wall.
Pulling a wheelstand on the GN whilst pulling out from the cafe after breakfast.
The GN's absolutely carving up on the gravel. Sproty's crawling along at 20-30k, getting passed by ginny's doing 80-90k :2thumbsup
THE CAPE!!!! (many cool photos to come)
The little kids at soooo many stops drooling over the bikes, and a few getting photos on them.
Badger: "I think i broke my ass!"
Drider and Toto getting their photo's taken with their knee down on a little plastic kids trike in Whangarei.
The crazy old man running the backpackers in Whangarei.
Cruising into home and getting all my stinky gear off, and having a nice long shower :done:  :apint:

But just quickly (i.e. before i forget)...
Some of my favourite quotes/moments from the trip, think we might have a few new sigs outta them
Chocolate Wheels (to Badger): ":shit: Dude, i could swear i saw you with your knee down when i looked in my mirror!"
I think I worked out that knee down one! - The sun was behind us so your leg and saddlebags kinda merged together :P
Chocolate Wheels: "I think i just set a new land-speed record for the GN! :D"
I'd like to see someone beat it :first:
The rather amusing sleep antics of fellow bikers, ranging from talking and moaning, to full blown violence against the wall.
The GN's absolutely carving up on the gravel. Sproty's crawling along at 20-30k, getting passed by ginny's doing 80-90k :2thumbsup
Everyone stopped laughing about the GN's when we got onto that gravel

Dude, you're scary enough on that little fixxer. Never knew they could go that hard! Just watch out for the ruts next time :D
Fek no man lol
The most funniest part was when someone was talking about lamp shades as your light and how you would use it as a indicators. Lmao

Well this tour has been exciting for me even before it began. I had been looking at weather forcast website( www.metvuw.com ) and finally in the last week I was able to see that weather was gonna be nice and therefore we could make the tour happen.
I'm really glad that many people joined in. Us 250s and 150s (crazy ones) and the big boys on their super lightening fast toys.
Some highlights of first day ...
jacko2 turning up with his thunderous sounding SV1000 - man that was just music to my soul :jerry:
about 20 bikes leaving from shell westgate with me in the front - my first tour and I get to lead - wooooohoo. I felt 10ft tall. All people on their flashy fast and gorgeous bikes and I lead them - woooohooooo :woohoo:
Seeing Bomma and Macstar carving up those corners on the 16. That was majic boys , i wish i could have played in the same sandpit as you. Unfortunately we are still in different kindergartens :baby:
Also the Lady on the SV1000 ( that also sounded fantastic) and her Husband on the GSXR1000 - you guys just made the trip to warworth so fun , watching you dissapear behind the horizon at gazilion Km/H and then quetly and modestly waiting for us slow nanas to cath up on the next turn off. You guys were brilliant. And Fast.
Twisties to and from "Big Ass tree" were nice ay , just gorgeous.
and also twisties leading to kaitaia and that gorge - man that was brilliant.
Saw Macstar and Pocket Cracker do power wheelies - wone word - WoW:2thumbsup
Hit an eagle with my shoulder but lucky we were both all good.
The twisties before Kaitaia were just the cherry on the cake for that day riding. Sinister kicked my ass on the twisties. Sinister , you dont need a bigger bike bro , you need a smaller one so we can keep up. I recon you still kick our ass on the twisties evern if you were on a scooter.
O by the way Sinister - I would strongly advice you to invest in some leathers or at least anything that has armour in it. After I foind out you were just wearing jeans and jeans jacket I kept praying that you dont come off your bike coz it would have been a mess to deal with. :oi-grr:My 2c.
Second Day...
Thaose roads leading to the cape were as someone quite simply put it close to "bike orgasmic". That was the first time I've been able to take a corner at 137. Smooth
Gravel - not too bad, BUT LIMESTONE GRAVEL - F*****g Hate it. All those stoned the size of apples. Had an "oh Shit" moment on a number of times but luckyly - kept it upright.
Badger8 and chocolate wheels were just champions - completely gunning it trough the gravel and leaving thick dust for us slowies to brethe ;)
The Cape itself was brilliant - View, people, kids admiring the bikes - just great. Climbing back to the carpark in full leathers carying a helmet and a backpack - that was not fun. me and Badger8 were moaning about it all the time.
Damn 20 more ks of gravel on the way back. The whole gravel experience was a huge learing curve for me. I still cant say that I like to go on gravel on my road bike but I can say that I'm confident enogh to go driving on gravel should I need to.
Seeing Cocolate wheels ride the gn with 132Km/s - priceless. Man those GNs have some guts.
The harley riding gang with the name whatever it was ...(nagas , what was their name ?) were just so fear inspiring. I espessially pulled over for them and every single one gave me a wave- that was just sooooooooo cooooooool.
Day 3...
nagash Cracked me up with his leaning off tecnique... fantastic.
Those were nice twisties we did today were cool. My new favourite route.
Woodcocks was great to be done today. I did it 3 times today thanks to Drider97 and his blown tyre. One mans loss - another mans gain - thank you.
I rode Chocolate Wheels GN250 today - I felt like a true brue harley rider - that thing was sooo nice , comfourtable and I was able to look at scenery - that was soooo awesome :) thank you Chocolate Wheels for that experience.
All in all a fabulous tour.
I want to thank you all for the great tour coz it would have sucked doing it alone.
We all should also thank Jacko2, Pocket Cracker, Macstar and Badger8 for taking turns on being TEC and looking after all of us. :niceone:
thats my write up of the trip, i'm currently resizing the photos and will post them here very soon...
Thank you All

Those Suzuki boys will never let you live that down
Scary thought that a 600cc sport bike is appox twice the top speed of a GN :)
Bugger I missed this one boys. Would have loved to be there. Had to make do with a couple of rides up Old North testing the camera instead.

I'm gonna get soft now, bear with me.
Thanks so much to Todd. Your honesty and enthusiasm was a pleasure to be around. I think we all found it contagious which was part of why the trip was so good. Thank-You.
Being with you imports to nz has restored a lot of optimism back in this cynical old kiwi. You guys have reminded me what a great place we have to live. Thanks Martin.
The irish lads, so quick to smile and chat, can't help but smile with you.
OK soft shit over - resume normal transmition.
Thanks to Cracker for tag teaming the TEC with me, ya mad cunt, was a blast wasn't it?
Isaak, cheers for sharing your drugs buddy, my back got better and better Saturday. Even managed to get used (again) by the GF that night.
Funniest memory - two GNs side by side, tucked in, asses on pillion seats going hard out, eye-balling each other. Priceless!!! Badger, your riding was awsome buddy, you will handle and appreciate a bigger bike no problem when the time comes.
The rest of you, best moments for me were at each stop seeing your grins when your helmets came off. Brilliant!!!
Thanks again guys, I would love to ride with any of you again, even our 'Baby-Faced Assasin' on the 150 2 smoker. (great skills)
Bring on the next one!!!

It was a battle of pride i tell ya! :D Cant wait for a bigger bike, so many times i just needed more power to carry my line through and launch outta the corner, but no matter how hard i twisted, nothing happened! Did manage a nice little wheelstand leaving the cafe in Kaitaia tho
If you thought the normal grins at each stop were good, you should've seen the one on my face when Pocket Cracker gave me a test-ride on the GSXF :shit: :D
Pleasure riding with you mate, and additional thanks for hangin at the back with us underpowered folk, you're a bloody legend :niceone:
