UPDATE 3: Weather looks to be Good for the tour. TOUR WILL START ON FRIDAY MORNING .
UPDATE 2: Picture of TOTO aded, in case you dont know who to look for. Green/white/balck leathers.
UPDATE 1: The Tour has been Changed to THREE DAY Tour instead of Two Day tour.
DAY 1 - Auckland to Kaitaia.
Day 2 - Kaitaia to Whangarei.
Day 3 - from WHANGAREI to Auckland.
Hello Bikers.
WHAT: EJ and I(TOTO) are organising a TWO DAY TOUR up north.
As most of you know Easter this year is on 21st (easter friday) , 22nd, and 23rd (easter Sunday) March. So we have decided to do a two day tour during that time, as we hope more people would be able to join us. Depending on weather forcast which will be available in the last week prior to the tour the tour will leave either on 21st (friday), 22nd (saturday) or an unlikely but POSSIBLE option on 23rd (sunday), and coming back the day after. This will be a Two day RIDING tour which means that we will be mostly riding, only stopping for gas/toilet and lunch and dinner and sleep.
WHO:Everyone is welcome to join regardless of the bike size or bike type. Please note that you need to be comfourtable and confident on the open road and confident in your bike. It would suck if your bike just dies somewhere.
SPEED:
we will not be going into licence loosing speeds, but you must be able to keep 100 - 110k on the open road. If falks on bigger bikes do decide to join us (Most welcome), you can overtake leader if you feel bored but please bear in mind that if we loose you due to you being so incredibly fast and we can't catch up with you, you will be responsible for finding your own way around.
PLAN:
DAY 1 - Meeting at SHELL WESTGATE at 8:00 and leaving SHARP at 8:30. Taking SH16 via Kaukapkapa, Welsford, making our way to SH12 via Dargaville having LUNCH there. Staying on SH12 , we may stop to see the biggest tree in NZ - the Lord of The Forest ,and after making our way to Kaikohe. After that we take SH1 and all the way up to Kaitaia. Sleep in backpackers in Kaitaia.
DAY 2 - Depending on weather We may make our way to Cape Reinga Leaving at 7am and getting back to Kaitaia by about 11:30. If there are people who are not keen on 20km GRAVEL to the Cape and 20km GRAVEL on the way back they can wait in Kaitaia and when the cape reinga returns we leave together. You are also welcome to leave by yourselves before that group returns but you MUST let us know so we do not look and wait for you.
After that taking SH10 all the way down and then making our way BACK to Kaikohe. From there taking a road that i'm not sure about the name at this moment whick will take us trough great forest places and eventually Twin Bridges ( a Majic Place). and eventually making our way to SH14 and Whangarey. Then Depending on how we are with time, weather conditions, and general stamina we will deside do we just keep on SH1 to Auckland, or we turn on to SH16 in welsford or if there are some brave ones we may even do Woodcocks Rd from Warkworth just for fun. Its all gonna be decided on the day. And eventually We make our way back to our warm showers and Beds in Auckland.
THE RIDE:
Ride will be catered for which means that we will Have a Leader and TEC (Tail End Charlie). TEC is the last one in the group and. The leader will signal to the second person behind him whoever that be at the time to stay and signal the corner to the others untill the TEC shows up at which point the person painting the corner will make his way in front of the TEC.
We accept volunteers for TEC, it doesn't have to be the same person the whole ride. We can decide on one TEC for one part of the ride and another person for TEC another part. This will be decided in the morning but please volunteers here so we know what to expect. Mobile number will be exchanged in the morning. If you need to comunicate with someone in the group in case of a crash you should send a TEXT MESSAGE instead of calling as I beleave noone can answer when riding.
SITUATIONS:
If you happen to be behind the TEC you are in the wrong spot, you must be in front of the tec at all times. TEC must wait for everyone in the group to be in front of him/her.
In case of a bin/crash (god please look after us), stop where its safe to stop - away from kerbs and roads and be visible. First thing you need to do is go on the side of the road and slow down the traffic coming to the scene of the bin so they do not run biker over. After that make sure biker is ok and if needed call emergency services. TEXT the leader what has happened and he will be in contact.
Both EJ and I (TOTO) will be carying Tyre Puncture repair Kits, hope we wont need them but better safe than sorry. I will be carrying a first aid kit aswell. :doctor:
High Visibility vests are encouraged.
Tricks, Stunts, stupidity on the road and anything endangering anyone is NOT ENCOURAGED and if you are being a dick on the road you will be asked to leave. :spanking: :Playnice:
Ride your own pace, and leave your ego at home. Dont try to prove how you can keep up with faster riders by going outside your limits. That is likely to make you crash and hence ruin the trip for everyone.
If your insurance company has a towing service make sure you KNOW THE NUMBER of that service and the number of your insurance company.
make sure you carry some cash with you, coz sometimes the plastic card thingies do not work properly.
Will post pic with a map of the tour soon so you have a visual what we are doing.
IMPORTANT:
Please sign up for this event so we know how many people we are attending. Link for Signing up ---> http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&ea=attend&e=1588.
Keep an eye on this thread for updates. :niceone:

Hey sinister^ Just looking on the map, I beleave the easiest place to meet us would be Kawkapakapa or Wellsford on that petrol station where SH16 and SH1 meet. Not sure is it Caltex or Mobil. No long stop dou so you guys must be on time wherever you decide is better for you. Meeting time to be confirmed closer to the date.

Hmmm might be able to make it. Hopefully at least to Dargaville then up through Waipoua forest. Might have to head back to Dargaville then depending if I'm staying there for Easter.
That road through the forest looks like insane fun on a bike. There's like 2 straight bits of road in over 20km. Pity about the leaves and campervans everywhere!

Oh and that gas station you guys are talking about is a Caltex. Toto, i'm surprised you can't remember this considering the number of times we've stopped there :Pokey:

Can just imagine a tent on the back of my CBR  She's not exactly suited to touring. Would probably need new knees after a trip like that.

We calculated that it shouldnt cost more than 120 bux for fuel. Food - depending on what you eat and how much you eat. Accomodation should be about 25- 25 bux. EJ did you check the backpacker prices ?
EDIT: GNs may only spend like 50 bux for fuel who knows - lucky bastards

Yep, backpacker price is $25. But if there are like 10 people going, I must make a reserve. Let me know ;)

How far is the trip (km that is)?
Also on a side note: I was talking to a mate today and we worked out that he earns more money per hour than I can burn riding my bike non-stop for an hour at 100km/hr. That people, rocks.

One thing about TEC, I reckon Rob (Gunnyrob) had the right idea of having a somewhat faster TEC if someone's keen to hang out at the back. Helps with passing and what not, but it sounds like we're gonna have a pretty big group for this one so it may not matter..
Should be a laugh I reckon, The GN's should go upfront and set the pace :D

1300/ a low average of 27KM/L ..... about 48 litres of fuel... at $1.72 a litre...
so about $83 worth of flammable liquid!
thats about 6 stops for fuel overall as well :D
25 bucks for a bed, chuck in 30 bucks for food and other stuff, i think about $140 should do it!

I have relatives in Whangarei and might be able to crash there over night or find another cheap backpackers and then take my time on the way back to aucks. Anyone else thinking likewise or am I just being overly careful? just seems to me to be an very long distance to cram into a whole day.

Who is Keen for THREE DAY tour instead of TWO DAY TOUR?
Nagash

I'll do the three day tour, we could just have a few drinks or whatnot on the second night and just have a proper muck around in Whangarei.
Chocolate and Badger, you mentioned you had relatives there. They don't have a garage or something we can all crash in perhaps? i don't think us bikers need nothing fancy, but it'd cut down costs and effort of finding a second place to stay.
[EDIT]But err.. come to think of. I need to be back in Auckland by Sunday afternoon or evening. So if we left on the Friday i'd be keen. If not I may just pull out altogether.
I'm treating the girlfriend to a couple of nights stay at Kai Iwi Lakes starting Sunday evening and I reckon she'd murder me if I cut it a night short..

The three day tour sounds like the biz-niss! Makes more time to enjoy the journey, see the sights along the way, and have a good time in the evenings. Also some of us aint on the most comfy bikes :D
Have just had a chat to the parents, apparently they're outta town for easter weekend, and weren't too keen on a bunch of bikers trashin the place :bleh: i'll see what i can pull, but there may not even be a bed for me there on the sat night :shit:
Also, wouldn't recommend Kawakawa as a night stopover, not much to the township. Somewhere like Kerikeri might be the better option :)

Google times are pretty good guides if you factor in gas stops etc. You ridden that route? You'll spend at 30-40mins covering about 30km through Waipoua alone. Maybe more if you get held up by campervans.
I know *you* can make it mate. Easy peasy as you've been doing lots of long rides. It's others who aren't used to long days I'm worried about binning when they get tired.

The route looks great, but i would recommend Kaitaia for the first night stop, and Kerikeri for the second. Spreads the miles a bit better, and means we're staying in slightly bigger towns (big is relative in the far north :bleh:). Makes it much easier (and cheaper usually) to find a decent feed and reasonable accomodation for cheap (again, reasonable is relative). Could always throw on the tent if someone wants to get cozy

404km and 5h 49m.
Probably not tooooo bad if you have a good break just on the other side of the Waipoua forest and recharge the batteries. I'm hoping to at least make it that far with you guys. Could make it up to Kaitaia maybe as well.
To do it yourself:
- Go to maps.google.com.
- Then click "get directions"
- Put in a starting address say "queen st, auckland, nz" and a destination say "kaitaia, nz". That gets you started with the shortest/quickest route.
- Now the fun part. If you put the mouse over the route line you can click and drag it to set a waypoint. For example drag the line over to SH16 then let go. Now it re-plots the route. You can remove way points if you mess them up by right clicking.
- To send your route to someone or post it on KB click on "Link to this page" up the right corner and copy the URL. Handy to save in notepad for later reference too.
If you have a google account you can even save maps :)
Yeah man, 500k's is all good.
I went for a night ride after I got back from the Coro loop ride.. it really ain't all that bad.
It's not the km that matter it's the time in the saddle. One day to coro loop is very different to doing the coro loop 3 days in a row.
Also, if you do an average of 95km/h 500km will take less time than if you average 75km/h. Some 400km rides will take 8 hours. Others 4.
Google maps takes this into account and works out the time to cover that distance based on how windy the road is. It's a great guide for planning without relying on km.
But all that said if everyone takes care of eachother and have a couple of good rest stops during the day it's quite do-able. I'm probably being a bit of a nana after having someone bin on a ride I organised.

We calculated that it shouldnt cost more than 120 bux for fuel. Food - depending on what you eat and how much you eat. Accomodation should be about 25- 25 bux. EJ did you check the backpacker prices ?

I cant face the $400 and 25 demerits for not wearing a $2 piece of plastic. I wonder if they did try to sting me if it'd be an effective 30kph over the speed limit for sittin at 100? or just 'riding outside license conditions'. Hope i dont find out the hard way!

Should be fine with the L on your R, but someone once mentioned that you may be bound by the license conditions of a learner if you do ride with it on. not sure if that's right or not, wont really be a problem in this case tho :)

Rather than SH1 to kaikohe, take the Rawene ferry. Much nicer roads, although a longer trip.

Hey sinister. we leave westgate at 8:30 so in my view we should be there about 9:30 - 9:45 if everything goes to plan. I'd say if you wait for us there from 9:30 you should be Tip Top.

Note from EJ:
OK guys, I was going to say this to you guys during the briefing but since I'm not comming, I'll post it up.
Important things to know.
Since its a 3 day trip, get some clothing packed but not too much. Travel lightly (important)
Drink lots of water. V is good
If the weather is cold, drink warm or hot drink (they really help)
From Kaitaia to Cape Reinga, there are no signs saying e.g. "84kms to Cape Reinga", so you might feel that the road seems endless (since you don't know how far you've traveled).
Reset the trip meter to 0 in Kaitaia, and you would prob reach the gravel in about 98km. From the beginning of the gravel to the Cape Reinga, its exactly 18.5kms. Oh btw, there are about 5 hills to go over (gravel). It may feel endless...
Don't know what I'm talkin about? Then experience it and regret! :devil2:

Indeed, good stuff EJ :niceone:
Tryin to decide just how lightly i will travel, and what combination of luggage carrying i shall use. Tank bag is way too small, but could likely do it with tank bag + backpack. Problem then becomes fairly full backpack on for three days solid = not such a good idea.
Might just have to throw the saddlebags on. They do get in the way a bit, but will just have to live with it i guess
Distance to the cape is a good point for those with small tank ranges, be aware that the Kaitaia-Cape-Kaitaia run is roughly 225km, approx 3h riding (slower speeds + gravel etc). There is gas at Houhora (72km from the cape) and a very un-reliable station at Waitiki Landing (20km from the cape). Both these options will be more expensive than your average servo (read: criminally so, especially on easter weekend), last semi-reasonably priced gas is at Kaitaia.
Bear it in mind, and if someone can easily carry a jerrycan, it might be a good idea. (i have one, but not easy to carry. will look at ways to strap it on closer to the time if needed)

See my profile pic lol
I took Tankbag, Backpack and a Saddlebag (actually my side bag). It works.
Oh, carry a couple of plastic bags just incase you have smelly undie
No, really I'm serious lol

Oh, almost forgot, There is a BP station just outside of the Kaitaia (north). It is PLENTY to go back and forth from that point with a full tank. But remember to fill up before leaving Kaitaia after visiting Cape Reinga lol

Hmm.. the cape's getting more and more uninviting the more you people describe it. I may give it a miss, but i'll decide how I feel at the time.
About carrying stuff.. How much you planning on bringing Chocolate wheels?!
It's three days.. Leathers, T-shirt or two, spare change of trousers, maybe boots if you use those massive ski size riding boots.
That'll all fit in me back pack
But whatever, all to their own and what-not.
Man i'm real keen for this. Woo! Fucking wicked to be a biker.

Well bear in mind you'll have all your riding gear on unless stopped somewhere, in which case you can just throw it all in a pile if need be. Not such a good idea if we stop somewhere and wander away from the bikes tho i suppose.
Main thing is a few changes of whatever you wear under your riding gear, something warm for the evenings, small amount of food / drink (personally will be a box of meausli bars and bottle of water minimum, small snacks during the day go a long way for energy).
Plastic bags definitely a good idea for smelly / wet gear. My socks sttttteeeeeeennnnkkkkkk after a day in boots!:laugh:

About carying luggage - i'm chucking my backpack on the pillion seat and gonna tie it up and that will be it.
So amm yea we should be sweet. Also depending on how I go in the luggage department I may decide against the first aid kit. I wont be carryin the beer from home mate, she'd be rather warm and shaken by the time we get there! I'm planning to just get major feeds and drinks along the way. I'm assuming others had similar plans? Not planning on carrying three days food with me from home!
Actually, now i think about it, i should probably take lunches, since we may well stop in the middle of nowhere for lunch. Dinner in major towns shouldn't be a problem, though it is Easter weekend after all...
And i am tempted to try riggin up a hose to a large water bottle in the saddlebags (and yes, i DID say WATER :bleh:)
If you dont want to carry the first aid kit, i'd suggest bringing it to the meet and i can throw it in my saddlebags. Wouldn't be a bad idea anyways, as i'd say i'll be right near the back most of the way. I've got my first aid ticket too, just FYI incase needed (heaven forbid).
Also, if anyone else has one, do bring it if you can. Better to carry it and not need it than need it and not be carrying it! niceone:

About carrying stuff.. How much you planning on bringing Chocolate wheels?!
Me? two pairs of clothes (plus what i'l be wearing) and riding kit, puncture kit, first aid kit, clear visor (wearing the tinted), money, light snacky kinda things, water, camera, pair of smexy +7 damage blue running shoes (wearing riding boots) and maybe a beanie.
Everything non-soft gets chucked into the top box and the rest goes into a backpack.
Sorted.
(I usually carry most of that stuff ANYWAY, so the rest should fit into a pack)

Bikers are expected to look cool at all times.

LOL i'm actually not bringing any other shoes except my boots to be honest.
I stay in my leathers only when the gf gets kinky and starts wearing her latex outfit
Looking COOL is a requirement to be able to join that tour so no worries , we will be as cool as Batman in a kindergarten

Hey TOTO, where are we staying in Keri Keri for the night? My olds have a house in Mangawhai with beds and maybe even some beer. If we need somewhere to stay your all more than welcome to come stay there instead of Keri Keri.
