Came off at Manfield today, body is little bit sore apart from that never been better. I am insure with Star Insurance this is my second year. After the accident number of riders told me that I might not be insure for track days. So with in one hour (still in manfield) I call Star Insurance up. Being as a Sunday no one was in the office so I left a message and Philip from Star called me back. I told him the full store and the first question he ask me was am I ok, I thought that was very kind of him consider we never met. He also ask me have I notify Star I was doing track day, I told him no as I was not aware that notification is required. So he is going to check on his data to see if I am cover for track day or not and get back to me tomorrow. I came home and gone through my insurance Policy in no where it stats that track day is not covered. I also just done a search in KB number of Star Insurance forums pop out. The last forum Star listen stats that notification is required for track day back on 20/12/07. This information is new to me. At the moment I am bit worry about tomorrows outcome. Has anyone been in the same position and what was your outcome??

Not too sure how it will go notifying after the event. I have my bike insured with John Baker Insurance. I rang them to let them know I was doing the Taupo trackday, Liam from JBI rang me back 20 min later to inform me I was covered. Well happy with that.
Best of luck to you, I hope it works in your favour

Surely if your insurer changes a part of the insurance cover, for whatever reason, the details of this will be sent to you immediately.
If that does not happen, then you comply with the rules and requirements that are stated in your insurance policy.

No, most insurance companies say they reserve the right to change your policy, and they say they publish the policy changes in the newspaper, and it's available online too.

That's what they do, but it seems like they should have to tell YOU, not you have to find out from somewhere.

Unfortunately if they had to tell you personally then the onus would also be on them to prove this in court if necessary, hence the reason they just put in paper or internet I guess.

I shouldn't complain too much about Star considering they've just paid out to replace my bike after a similar accident involving my father at Pukekohe, but this issue with notification and Star Insurance has been mentioned before. Star's policy does NOT allow them to change their policy mid-term. The policy is a contract between you and them, and there's nothing in contract law that allows unilateral changes.

Under the previous interation of Star Insurance policies, track days weren't specifically covered as they existed in a grey area between standard road use and use in speed trials, time trials, racing, etc. However, a key selling point of their policy was track day cover. You were not required to inform Star of each and every track day previously; I have an email from Philip Newall of Star (Starman on KB) telling me I do not have to let them know as I'm automatically covered for all track days. Bearing this in mind, a slightly better method of informing people of changes to the policy is required than simply putting up a post on KB. Not every track-day attendee is a KB member, and not every KB member reads the Trackday forum.

Since the change came into place, though, I believe the policy wording has changed so that you do have to inform them of every track-day to arrange cover. This is fine, provided your policy was issued with this wording, not the previous version.

My understanding from Donna at Kiwibike (who broker Star) is that any new policies get the new rules.

If you're an existing customer the changes come into effect from the next policy renewal.

Looks like I snuck in as I moved in Dec and the changes came in in Jan.

I rang just to confirm after seeing the threads here and my $500 excess stands for now but will increase to 15% of the policy cover if I renew this December. Better get some more trackdays in then eh ;)

As for ringing first. Well that's common policy and I personally feel more comfortable doing it anyway regardless of whether Star require it or not.
