Here's the date and details and the place to register:

Summer is nearly over and I for one have been very reluctant to join or organise any rides due to the high bin rate over recent times and yes, I stand with cap in hand as I am a casualty of such rides also.

Following points to be noted:
1. I am not a slow rider so this will not be for newbies.
2. I work real hard many hours a week and my tribe enjoys my company so there will few stops as I like to get home at a reasonable hour.
3. Lunch is always at the Coroglen due to the standard of their burgers.
4. There will be a meet at Autobahn Papakura and again at Kopu for the Southerners so they can join the ride as I like some of the guys from South of Bombay. I'm not gay so you know who you are.
5. I like my sleep in, in the weekends as I get few of them so it will not be too early and it certainly will not go to late.
6. It will run from Kopu to Coroglen to Coromandel and back the same way as the West coast is nice but crap due to 50 and 70kmh areas. The best roads are East so we do them twice.
7. You ride to your own abilities and no one is there to show off. You ride fast or slow and that's over to you. You do not try and keep up if you feel uncomfortable. if you feel uncomfortable, your pulse rate increases, your helmet fogs up when closed (at this time of the year) or your breathing increases than I'm sorry to tell you this but you are riding beyond your abilities, so slow down and get your burger order in last cos we will wait for you.
8. We don't ride with a tail end Charlie but are concerned and will look for anyone we see is missing.

Sounds cruel, thems the rules and I would very much like to catch up with old mates... Wybmadity, Kornholio, Kiwifruit, DMTD, R2D2, Tony (1400) and heaps more plus the Ork crew of course, there's so many.

RULES OF THIS RIDE
Ok, due to the apparent large volume of riders turning
up to this event, to keep things safer, I am instituting
some rules.

Those who know me realise I am quite flexible and don't
like over organisation on group rides but because of the
amount of people coming and the fact that it would be
nice to complete a Coro ride of this size without a
bin the following rules will need to apply.

Most of these are common sense for large group rides.

1. I will not be riding the majority of the time at
my normal pace for safety reasons as I have not ridden
with a few of the riders turning up. You can maintain
a fast pace in small groups with riders you know well but
this ride will need to be toned down a bit.

2. Try and keep the top speed down to
save your licence and to prevent this turning into
a race to get the last scallop burger at the Coroglen.

3. No overtaking on blind corners. In regard to this
ensure you keep in your lane when you can also see
through corners as these will be the sections of road
other riders will be passing you on if you are slower
than them in the twisties. This means keeping the right
lane free at all times except if you are overtaking.
Absolutely no undertaking at any time.

4. When overtaking, make sure no one is already doing
so, or else you will end up with an unwanted pillion.
Always indicate your intentions at all times.

4. Leave a good following distance, because if a rider
in front has to brake hard, with lots of riders you get
a concertina effect which means a large pile of bikes
and riders to untangle and you will definitely miss out
on your burger.

5. If you find it necessary to point your front wheel
at the sun or your rear wheel at the moon, just make sure
you have plenty of room and you won't take out other riders
if things go pear shaped.

6. Don't blast past every one on the straights and then
end up holding up more experienced riders in the tight
stuff. If you see you are holding people up, shake your
right leg, move to the left and slow down a little
so they can pass safely and ride to their own abilities.

7. Finally, all riders are not to exceed their own comfort
level and must ride to their own abilities. Do not let
the red mist come down and the tetesterone take over
and think you can keep up with the more experienced riders
if you are not experienced yourself.

How do you know you are riding beyond your abilities:
a) Your breathing gets rapid.
b) You visor fogs up easily, espcecially in the tight
stuff.
c) Your heart rate increases.
d) You feel uncomfortable.
e) You know you are going quicker than you should and
you know you are pushing it more than usual.
f) Your lines go to pieces and things get out of
shape under braking.
g) You have a nice view of the sky through native
foliage and you hurt lots.

Once again I mention I will not be held responsible for other peoples
actions on the day. I am merely a facilitator of this ride organising
meet points and the dat etc.

Cheers

Paul

Ummm...is there a date for this ride?

beyond
6th March 2008, 20:10
Hey, good to hear from you Goblin :)
No date yet but I am thinking late March early April but certainly after Easter once all the cage traffic has subsided a bit.

I could be persuaded if it is a Sunday other than the first Sunday of month...not that I am telling you??

Cool. That might work for me. Will try and make this one. :sunny:

I dont know about the rest of the country but there's roadworks in every direction around here. Some unmarked new sealed bits so hope everyone stays safe out there.

beyond
6th March 2008, 20:27
No worries Graham.
I work every second Saturday morning so Sunday could be a goer and Autumn has fairly stable weather as well. At least no melted tar and overheating in your leathers to worry about :)

Know what you mean. I think all the councils are working off their budgets for the year and paving roads that don't even need it but their budgets don't seem to extend to putting up signs where necessary. Can make for some intereseting rides eh? . Haven't done the loop in some time but I hear that's had a good going over as well in parts :(

Be real good to catch up with you if we do :)

Can anyone come along?

Sure can. Experienced riders would be the recommendation so if you're a good rider, I see no problem.

Looks like the usual crew is in as per normal :)

It will be after Easter weekend and more likely Early April.

Hooning...???? As the rules state, you can go as quick as you like or are comfortable with, but no endangering fellow riders. I am not responsible for anyones actions as we are all grown adults

Behave, enjoy, meet fellow riders, catch up with past acquaintances and everyone rides their own ride and are responsible for their pwn actions.

It's not a cop out for me but I aren't into tight structured organised rides. I'm merely the facilitator to get one up and running and will arrange times, route etc at the meeting points.

Last time I mentioned something about no bins I think I got a closer look at the tarmac then intended (oil on the back wheel).

So, it's a dicy thing to say "No bins" when it could be me or anyone else saying no bins. Then it becomes a chronic foot in mouth disease problem :)

Our aim of course will be no bins and I trust that on the day we will have a good turnout, we all take our anti tetesterone shots, ride well and all have an awesome day without a negative to marr occassion.

Hope the weathers ok that far out but if not, I will make sure we get this done before the green moss revisits the shady corners of the loop.

Ok, how do I change it so only those saying they will be coming get registered for the ride? I want to make sure the Coroglen has enough staff to feed the descending hoards :)

I think most of the people on the list are coming though and I know about another 10 who will be as well. Could be a biggy alright so more care will need to be taken. Looks like people have been hanging out for a ride for some time eh?

Ok, just checked under edit and I have ticked the box saying:
"Allow users to specify that they will be attending this event."

I assume this means they have to say they are attending and it will not add them automatically??

If this is the case which I expect it will be, we are in for a big group ride alright.
Most appear to be experienced riders which is good but we don't want an all out race to be in for a scallop burger at Coroglen. Can't see the scallop burgers going very far unless they rape the seabed the day before.

As long as all take extra care, ride to their own abilities and watch the speeds and overtaking manouevres, there shouldn't be any problems.

Some rules (which I personally don't like too much) will probably need to be put in place on the day. Some help will be appreciated of course :)

I do not intend stopping at every intersection as it will take all day and all night to do the ride otherwise. Meeting points will be put in place such as lunch stop, gas stop etc so those taking their time or on slower bikes will know they will always be able to catch up with the group.

Seems like the 'older generation' are the ones organising a Coro loop for your layabout arse here bro.

;)

beyond
30th March 2008, 13:46
Perhaps the older generation should not be so uptight about younger people having a bit of harmless fun and get over their mid life crisis already.

Not against anyone having fun at all. Those who have ridden with me know they can pretty much ride however they want to and I aren't actually having a mid life crisis either. In fact, I still think and act like a 20 year old at times, just ask my wife :) I'm certainly not adverse to having fun myself which is why I ride and own a 1400 and I don't think I ride at a slow pace.... I personally like a good quick blast and especially in the tight stuff.

My only concern is that this is going to be a very big group ride by KB standards and the chance of a bin rises exponentially with more and more riders registered. Other than the odd 250cc ride and one that ZRXER organised a while back, there hasn't been a full on Coro loop for a while and a hell of a lot less since the incident of 2.12.06.

I merely want a great day for all with no incidents which will severely marr future rides if something goes wrong. If we get through this ride and have a great day without problems than I for one will be very happy as I know first hand on several occassion how a great day can turn to shit very quickly, as do many others on this site.

You can be assured I am not going to legislate this ride into a boring pootle around the Coro but certainly want to ensure people know what to expect with a few safety ground rules which will be more about common sense in certain situations anyway. Such as:
1. If you aren't confident in the tight stuff, don't go like a bat out of hell on the straights overtaking everyone and then end up holding people back in the twisties.
2. When in the twisties DO NOT cut right handers which you can see through as there is a good chance a more accomplished rider will be using this point to pass you.... and never undertake.
3. If you know you are holding up other riders, stick your right leg out and wiggle it to let them know you see them and are letting them pass.
4. Don't drop a wheelie when bunched up in case the riders in front brake for any reason and you end up an involuntary pillion

Etc Etc.... common sense stuff only.

Other than that, do what you want if it doesn't affect other riders, but I take no responsibility for other peoples actions as I have already pointed out, I am merely the facilitator of this ride.

LOL Paul I love u man. My last post was not aimed at you. Totally agree on the safety concerns you are raising here. You will see that I always let the faster riders go first and follow their lines constantly learning from them, and thus improving myself.

Perhaps the older generation should not be so uptight about younger people having a bit of harmless fun and get over their mid life crisis already.Maybe some of the older generation can see that certain riders would not even qualify to be a hair on Rossis arse let alone ride up and down the countryside with his number on their bike.

Maybe some elder riders could simply just get a life and stop bothering their distinguished selves with what other riders are doing and watch their own lines, and not get run over by TRUCKS; than taunt younger riders who know theyre not the legendary Rossi but dream to oneday ride a bike as capable as his...

How about everyone ignores the obvious shit stirring that the "few" are attempting, and suceeding in doing to get people wound up?

Novel idea I know.

If they turn up, I am sure that there are enough sensible heads there to firstly warn them about what is ok and what is not, and then if they choose to ignore that advice, I am doubly certain those sensible heads will leave these children in no doubt as to how they feel about it.

How about if prizes were given for the non squids?
I think I can get something sorted via Bayride Motorcycles and I know of someone else is possibly able to front a prise or two...

As DMNTD has said, I'm prepared to put a helmet up as a prize. Everyone who completes the ride without an accident goes in the draw. I'm currently trying to get others interested in putting forward prizes.

As DMNTD has said, I'm prepared to put a helmet up as a prize. Everyone who completes the ride without an accident goes in the draw. I'm currently trying to get others interested in putting forward prizes.

The chances of me putting anything up for a prize for getting safely around the Coromandel loop are nil! What a load of shit!

Seriously mate, nice sentiment and all but...

Is this prize draw just for this ride, or will it encompass all loop rides?

I dont want a chance to win a new helmet for riding within my capabilities and riding a ride. Having said that my Shoei has a bit of a defect in it and I do need a new one, I have not fallen off my bike for 3 years (and that was the dogs fault) surely that counts?

Perhaps you could extend this offer to all rides. I took one from Warkworth to Mangawhai on the weekend, we had some very quick riders with us, no one binned, we got no tickets either. Happy to give you names to enter in the draw.

That's actually a damn good idea. 'kin ell, maybe you do have some real motivation to get people riding safely.

I'm currently trying to get others interested in putting forward prizes.

I'll put my money where my mouth is too. How about a bottle of Glenlivet as second prize for the draw (obviously to be consumed after riding)?

Hang on, back up a ways there, Mom.

The Coro loop is probably the most notorious North Island riding route for serious bins. We all know why.

Making this particular ride (which looks like it'll be a biggy) a special occasion as per Katman and DMNTD's suggestion could be an excellent way of getting folk thinking along "don't be a squid" lines.

I'm prepared to set aside my reservations about Katman's approach to date and support this effort; I think it's a good idea on its own merit.

Is this prize draw just for this ride...

Yes, I reckon that'd be the way to go.

KB Coro rides are renowned for less than safe rides(I'm well aware of my past antics too btw)...if this approach may help out surely it's a good thing?

Mom, why take this suggestion as a personal insult to your philosophy on riding?
As any first year Psych student will tell you, positive reinforcement is much more effective in changing behaviour than aversion therapy and a such I think the idea has merit. Anything that may encourage even one rider to be more determined to complete the ride safely is worth a shot.
As DMNTD says the Coro loop is notorious and while most bins are not too serious, as we all know some have been truly tragic. Better not to have any at all surely.
Many of you have been demanding that Katman take a more positive approach to encouraging safety and survival and now he's prepared to put his money where his mouth is.........anyone else care to? I will.

LOL...nah not at all but no harm in offering incentive for riding within ones' abilities eh?
TBH I'm more concerned about a n00b attempting to "keep up" than someone with more experience who is well aware of their and their bikes limitations.
Fucked if I want to be picking people up while I'm trying to have some fun...but I will

ill offer a prize for anyone that doesnt exceed 150 k an hour.......in other words no one will win,!!

offering a helmet or any other prize (for non bins or riding within limits )is kinda ironic, lets face it no one does !! when ya ride at 140/50/60/70/etc kms (many of you will ride way faster than this ), you are not riding sensibly (and yes i have done this too)
there are so many unknows out there... to be honest the last coro ride i did , scared the bejesus out of me, as boomer, ronin ,enigma, sanx, etc will vouch for , i was tail end charlie.. and if i come this time i will do so again... over the past few years i have seen many crashes.. mostly on the track.. let me tell ya, if ya crash at even 120 kms with an obstacle in the way it aint gonna be pretty!!

if ya wanna ride like a troy corser... take it to the track people...there you will impress people!!!

just my two cents (be careful)

ps did you guys know that the sherriffs, the strouts, smiths, etc , dont ride on the road.....

Love your styles DUMPTY.

I dont think Beyond was expecting such a big number of riders.
I thought twice about going and have decided that I will. I want to support a good mate and I want to see some of my mates.
Im going on the basis that its just as much experienced riders setting an example as it is telling the squids to pull their heads in. Im in it for the burgers so my roll will be slow.

Novel idea I know.

If they turn up, I am sure that there are enough sensible heads there to firstly warn them about what is ok and what is not, and then if they choose to ignore that advice, I am doubly certain those sensible heads will leave these children in no doubt as to how they feel about it.

You won't need them, they only slow ya down, and add unsprung mass. In fact, if you lose the discs, there'll be less rotating mass too.

OK BES thats a start.

First and foremost with group rides like this is to look out for your own safety and that of those around you so every one makes it home and has a great day. The end.

For me, fast rides are reserved for solo missions or with riders who understand what the others will do in a given situation. If you're gonna have a crack then time and place mate. Coro on a weekend is not the time or the place.

I think that the key to fast road riding is not to worry about going fast. Think about economy of motion with respect to picking the perfect line, be as efficient and smooth as you can. The pace will come over time and it will be as safe as it can be.

I had a fantastic ride with some noobs the other day, for the most part I sat at the back and watched them while I tried to be as perfect as I could. I swear I went through scenic drive and up 16 but only used my brakes maybe 6 or 7 times.

On longer rides efficiency will make you on average faster over the day. I cant count the number of riders that start out like a Rossi wanna be in the morning and five hours later they are all over the show.

Ride with people who do reasonable K's and watch how they effortlessly maintain a good pace without being dangerous. Many new "fast" riders can't keep up with riders like this for long.

You want to learn, at some point during the day pick some one in the pack that has these attributes and follow them, start near the back, start slow, watch others make the mistakes and don't be a cock.

Absolutely no underatking at anytime.

Katman
11th April 2008, 19:12
I'd suggest one more;

No undertaking. Nothing worse than lining up a corner and having someone dive through inside you forcing you wide (and possibly into the oncoming lane).
