I got a email today from our local site saftey officer about a nasty spider.

Subject: FW: Be Aware: If You See This Spider - LEAVE IT ALONE!! It is in NZ!! Unclassified

Morning Everyone

I have just received this from Tony to forward to you. Please note the pictures are quite graphic, so be warned!.

If you see this spider please report to MAF immediately and if bitten seek medical treatment immediately. Ensure all your employees are aware these spider bites are very nasty and must be treated as soon as possible.

Here is the pic of the spider along with the damage it can do to you. BE WARNED these are VERY graphic/gory!!!

ummm - how big is it... ?

At the moment (being the cynical bastard I am)... it has enough distinguishing features to make it... umm... a spider.... but not easily refined beyond that.

Isn't that a white tail? They're common now, unfortunately. The only spider I kill - there's debate about whether their bites are as awful as sometimes reported but I figure where my kids are concerned, better safe than sorry.

Apparently they love pebble gardens - so put bark down if you don't want them around your place. Of course, with bark you get cockroaches .....

white tails are more compact... shorter leg length. plus they are mainly black with a tip of white on their backs.

just stripped my bed, and there was a mega black spider under the bottom sheet... took the whole lot outside and shook it out... dunno if its gone though. not sure what it was other than black.

I would like to think that if a genuine bitey (as this one may or may not be) breached our biosecurity then we would all get a more tangible warning from MAF.

BTW I still havent forgiven those bastiges for confiscating my last breeding pair of painted apple moths.

Edit - Looks like the Brown recluse is right up there with the Black Widow "Brown recluse spiders possess a cytotoxin which may produce an ulcerating sore or lesion; antitoxins are available for both"

The wounds are those similar to what can occur with a white tail bite.
The first photo is not a white tail spider.

I subscribe to the theory that it is not the spider's venom, but there is a bacteria that lives on the white tail's fangs.

This causes an allergic reaction similar to gangrene - in some people with the relevant alergy.

My son was bitten by a White Tail in Hobart 10 years ago. He started to have the necrotic reaction.

Withing 4 days he had a blister the size of a 20c piece on his wrist and it was growing rapidly.

Amputation was discussed.

The cure not as drastic.

It was fortunate that he was in Hobart - because they stuck him in the Antarctic Station's decompression chamber and flooded him with oxygen.

This kills the bacteria.

He has a nasty scar - from a wound similar to the second photo.

If you do get bitten and have the allergic reaction. Oxygen.

Mean time - kill them remorselessly.

My youngest son Nicky copped a nasty whitetail bite over Xmas. At first it appeared to be like a boil on his thigh (looked very much like the first pic of the thumb) but got progressively worse.

I drew around the red to check its progress - at one stage it was advancing a good 5mm an hour - we went straight to the After Hours and they lanced it and got him on antibiotics immediately.

He ended up with six weeks of antibiotics and still has a scar.

I found the spider in his bed. It didn't survive discovery.

OMG, anything with 8 legs (or less if they appear to be spidey-amputees) is bad news as far as im concerned. If i'm at all uncertain as to whether it should be allowed to live or not, i go for the latter option. But a humane death of "squash-by-shoe" is my choice rather than fly spray (even for spiders I think that's cruel).

Feckin White Tails!

I was talking to the boss the other day, when a White Tail casually strolled across the wall, just behind his head. First I'd seen over here (yeah I know they come from Aus.)
Makes a change from all the Redbacks though - killed 4 of those little buggers in the last week - that'll teach them to try and build a web from the compressor to the saw bench!!!

This is correct. It is a necrotysing coccus (strep or staph I can't remember which). But it is a little more complex than a simple bacterial infection. The spider venom is a protease, it lyses the protein in flesh, breaks it down and the bacteria gobble it up.

I think daddy Long Legs are still venomous, but their fangs can't penetrate human flesh.

Yeah, that's the myth.

Fact is that in the southern part of Africa there lives a spider called the violin spider which looks a bit like a daddy long legs and it has a very potent toxin that can be lethal.

Funny fact about the funnel web spider found among other places in Sydney: Their toxin is more potent to dogs and humans than other animals - which is a bit unfortunate since they are fairly aggressive and live in urban environments, go figure. Only in Australia...

Only in Australia...

Australia is a very confusing place, taking up a large amount of the bottom half of the planet. It is recognisable from orbit because of many unusual features, including what at first looks like an enormous bite taken out of its southern edge; a wall of sheer cliffs which plunge deep into the girting sea.

Geologists assure us that this is simply an accident of geomorphology and plate tectonics, but they still call it the "Great Australian Bight" proving that not only are they covering up a more frightening theory, but they can't spell either.

The first of the confusing things about Australia is the status of the place. Where other land masses and sovereign lands are classified as either continent, island, or country, Australia is considered all three. Typically, it is unique in this.

The second confusing thing about Australia are the animals. They can be divided into three categories: Poisonous, Odd, and Sheep.

It is true that of the 10 most poisonous arachnids on the planet, Australia has 9 of them. Actually, it would be more accurate to say that of the 9 most poisonous arachnids, Australia has all of them. However, there are curiously few snakes, possibly because the spiders have killed them all.

But even the spiders won't go near the sea. Any visitors should be careful to check inside boots (before putting them on) under toilet seats (before sitting down) and generally everywhere else. A stick is very useful for this task.

Got the email to and checked it out. It's a brown recluse spider which is similiar to the violin spider. Has been known to kill small children in the states.Has nasty cytotoxic venom (cell destroying) and for the unfortunate few can result in injuries seen in the photos. If you look closely at the pick you can see the violin shape on its back. They come out at night and wander around in search of prey, not aggresive but will bite if pressed against your skin as in when putting on your clothes or rolling over onto one in your sleep.:eek5:Daddy long legs are venomous and can bite through your skin but the venom is of no major consequence.

I don't know about anybody else but have you seen how many web sites about the spider all show the same 10-day infection photos???

Noticed this as my attempts at researching the topic kept giving me de-ja-vu.

To me it looks similar to a ''Fiddleback'' spider. Known in Melbourne & Adelaide.Toxic. Those lesions are similar to White tail bites( which only affect some UNlucky people. Just be thankfull you dont have our lovely Atrax-Robustus --the Sydney Funnelweb. Usually fatal without 1st aid & antivenom.
Or the Box Jelly fish .or the Cone shell . or the Bush Tick or the Blue Ringed Octopus..... google these nasty critters.
