I got buzzed by a jet fighter today, I hav'nt got a clue what it was, but from looking at pictures it may have been an f14.
It took off from woodbourne airbase just after lunch, did a circuit of the plains, then fucked off at full notes RIGHT OVER THE MOUNTAIN I WAS WORKING 0N TOP OF, fuck it was loud, do any of you lot know for sure what it was?

the government should recommission the Skyhawks, even if its for no yse other than to boost the moral of all the petrol-heads out there

It'll be the F111.

The F14s are in the process of being scrapped and are Carrier Based US Navy aircraft. Ain't no CVs anywhere NZ.

I feel your pleasure.

Was climbing Tongariro mid winter when we heard a rumble. First thing we thought was eruption, as it was really loud. Then out of nowhere two skyhawks came up the valley and our level beside us on the mountain.

Those were the days.

James Deuce

They've been retired but the scrapping process isn't finished.

They're scrapping them so Iran can't get their hands on the bits, so everything is being cut up into little chunks and melted.

The tooling was destroyed in ther '90s once the retirement decision was made so they ran out of parts fairly quickly.

20th March 2008, 18:46
yeah, cool

my cousin used to work on the skyhawks when he was in the airforce, he reckoned they used to bring them in regularly with grass hanging out of the flaps and stuff, thats how close to the tops of hills they are getting.

The Skyhawks are stored here, outside, I see them parked up most days :(

Yup its a swing wing....Also knowen as the Ardvark. There were a couple of Vampires floating about to...all getting ready for Warbirds.
Im Ex-Airforce......used to be based at Whenuapai.......always had the ozzys coming over for a visit, specially when 2 Squadren was based at Nowra in Oz.
The Sqwarks are all sitting on the tarmac or in one of the hangers on Woodbourne, see them every day at work....crying shame...all because of that monkey fucker of a she male hitler clarke. It's an awesome sight, in'it?

I used to love the displays put on in when I was in Israel (several centuries ago), nightime barrel rolls along the border over the dead sea with afterburners on and the low level passes by Phantoms and Skyhawks in northen Israel, neat stuff and really got the adddrenalin going.

Mind you those bloody rockets that got fired back got the adrenalin going too, wasn't quite as pleasureable!

An Aardvark? Are you sure... That's the F-111(F/G/H - or something like that) and are designed for electronic warfare (ECM) and target spotting (laser).

I thought they were pretty rare, even in the US. The most common ones are the F-111B I believe and they are fighterbombers...

Once upon a time when I was very young I remember going along the desert road in my parents Mk1 Honda Prelude. In the tundra there was a Scorpion tank, and it passed us. I remember it getting air over a hillock. Incredible.

Then another time whilst driving near Ohakea, getting buzzed by about 3 or 4 airmacchi's in formation close to the ground, they just skimmed the top of some poplar trees and flew over the car. What a sight.

Then again, just before their retirement, sitting on a yacht in the marlbourgh sounds on a calm day then.. BOOM!! A skyhawk pops over the ridge, drops and imaginary bomb on my head and then goes over another ridge. A minute later it swoops over again banked over 90' and doing a tight turn right above my head that made my eyes water (It looked impossible).

All gone now.

Odd this thread comes up, I'm pretty sure I saw a C-17 (Or maybe a C-5, but it was quite stubby) flying over wellington today.,

I'm sure I saw this aircraft on the way back from gisborne on wednesday (march 19). It was military-looking jet thing at about 200 feet AGL, 2-3 miles from me, heading south into the hills in the waimana area, not travelling outrageously fast, maybe 200-300kts, at about 1630hrs.. I thought "oh its just the military blasting around the place as usual", but of course the NZ military doesnt FLY combat jets in NZ any more do they... Interesting.

Yep - I guess they slowly started getting sorta replaced by the F-15E Strike Eagle and the F-117. But the F-111 were the ones that was applied to Gadhafi (sp?)... They apparently did a pretty good job.

Oh, I could be wrong - it has happened a couple of times in the past

I just thought it was only used for the ECM version with the big bulby lump on the tail plane and the under-belly target designator. I'd look it right up if I wasn't on my crappy at home dial-up connection.

A F-111? Don't hang me up on it - but I believe that the F-111B were some of the first planes equiped with radars specialised for *low*-level flight during nighttime - instrument flying.

Nade
20th March 2008, 21:56
yes.....the ol' skyhawks used to get pretty low. I remember pilots being given the ol reaming by squadren CO's for flying under transmission wires strung across gullys etc. Have seen damage to Tails from hitting them.
Or the Andovers.....stress meters off the scale after returning from flights....due to pilots being cowboys.....one particular trip I heard of a pilot trying to barrel roll one....weather he succeded I never found out...but even attempting one would be scary enough.
Then there were the mach runs in Ozzy by 2 squadren....the only way to get a skyhawk to break the sound barrier was to put it in a dive and go hard....which they used to do over a beach, starting just off the coast.....aim for an old tin hut on the beach and dive hard....till the owner of the hut turned up on base one day....someone had gotten to close upon pulling out of a dive and passing through the sound barrier and his lil tin hut got flattened by the pressure wave...not sure how true this is but I heard about it back in NZ a few days later. This practice was stopped. :spanking:

Saw the RAF playing in Scotland in some of their new jets up Glen Coe ?sp? and then a few minutes later an old warbird followed it up the valley, I still think the old planes sound much better!

Here are some shots of Northrop's Air Vehicle #1 for the Navy's new F/A-37

This prototype was flown on board the USS Harry S. Truman for catapult fit checks. The F/A-37A supposedly is a Mach 3.5, super cruise stealth fighter/bomber/interceptor with a 1000nm combat radius. Top speed is classified, but probably somewhere in the Mach 4 plus range. Also, it is said that there is no phase interval for this aircraft. It has a 10,000 hour life airframe and engines that require replacement only at failure or signs of trouble. F/A-37A Air Groups are to be based out of Whidbey Island and Norfolk with 12 planes to a squadron; four squadrons to a Group.

One last little tidbit, did you notice the pilot is a woman!"

I would be a rough ride I suspect. The pigs have Terrain Following Radar to help the pilot hug the ground at high speed. I've heard that the TFR has two settings - hard and soft - to determine how rigidly it follows the contours.

In that area it was probably a vintage aircraft - perhaps a Hunter. As for the Military. While the Sky Hawks are parked up at Woodbourne the Aermacchis are based at Ohakea and are maintained in flying condition to preserve their value. It's less costly to actually take them flying (and prove them airworthy) than it is to conduct all the necessary checks on the ground. They do just enough to check the aircraft and keep the pilots current.

The SU30 is a modernised SU27, which was very cool when it was originally launched and the equal of the F15. They've never been head to head in combat (afaik) so which is better is academic. The requirement that was eventually filled by the F22 meant that F15 never underwent a redesign along the same lines as the SU27.

Being in the Air force for 25 years pretty makes me qualified to flex my plane spotting expertise....

Aussies are now the only user of F-111's. They started off with 24 F-111Cs, then a couple of years ago they bought a stack of F-111Gs and spares to replace the ones they crashed. Of the ones they pranged in NZ, one was at Ohakea, another in the Hauraki Gulf as previously described.

The F-111B was a Navy variant that was stillborn, but that led directly to the development of the F-14 Tomcat.

The Tomcats were all retired last year. Note that they had reached the end of their lives, all the wiring was completely shot, & maintenance was a real bastard. They are now replaced by the F-18E & F Super Hornets. These have a real shit hot Radar & use updated AMRAAM Missiles. Navy pilots love 'em (Talked to a Hornet Driver last year)

Even the F-15s are getting dated. Recently they took a Sqn to India, who fly the latest variant of the SU-27 Flanker, and got their asses handed to them. Also, one had it's entire cockpit break off just in front of the air intakes during heavy air combat practice due to fatigue. Approx 40% of the fleet is still grounded.

The F117 Stealth fighters will all be retired this year too.

Main focus for the yanks is the F-22. They now have an operational Sqn. During mock ACM, two F-22s totally wasted a Sqn of F-15s before they were even detected. Aussies & Israelis have expressed interest in them, but are likely to go with the F-35 instead.

Aaaah, fighter aircraft.... Closest we have now are seasprites, at least we have missiles. (Here's me loading one now!)

That would've been an interesting exercise. The American military doesn't like it when they get owned during friendlies.

The F117 Stealth fighters will all be retired this year too.

There's going to be a bit of a gap in offensive capabilities with those gone because the IOC for the F35 isn't until sometime in 2011. However the B2 and F/A18 will probably cover all of the F117's roles until the F35's turn up.

Here's the hot poop:

A recent exercise with the Indian Air Force is causing U.S. Air Force officials to re-evaluate the way the service trains its fighter pilots while bolstering the case for buying the F/A-22 as a way to ensure continued air dominance for the United States, according to service officials.

“The major takeaway for the Air Force is that our prediction of needing to replace the F-15 with the F/A-22 is proving out as we get smarter and smarter about other [countries’] capabilities around the world and what technology is limited to in the F-15 airframe,” said Col. Mike Snodgrass, commander of the 3rd Wing at Elmendorf Air Force Base, AK. “We’ve taken [the F-15] about as far as we can and it’s now time to move to the next generation.”

Although service officials have been reluctant to detail how the Indians performed against the six F-15Cs from the 3rd Wing that participated in Cope India, Rep. Duke Cunningham (R-CA) said in a Feb. 26 House Appropriations defense subcommittee hearing that U.S. F-15Cs were defeated more than 90 percent of the time in direct combat exercises against the IAF.

Not surprising since the IAF has MIG-29's & Su-30's .
I wonder if that "Duke Cunningham" is the one and the same as the F-4 driver?

The f111 crew sit side by side in a pod that ejects if they pull the handle unlike conventional jets.

funny that.

Remember that one crashed at Ohakea a few years ago and they did eject the pod (cant remember if anyone was hurt of not)

(Sorry I see that this has already been mentioned!)

I feel your pleasure.

Was climbing Tongariro mid winter when we heard a rumble. First thing we thought was eruption, as it was really loud. Then out of nowhere two skyhawks came up the valley and our level beside us on the mountain.

Those were the days.

i had exactly the same on a school trip.
Had just climbed out of that flat basin bit and they came screaming past...
FK it was cool!

I was working at Warbirds over Wanaka all weekend. Saw the F111 quite a few times. scared the bejesus out of my kids.

Only did Mach 0.9 - I think Mach 1 and above is illegal over land though so they don't fly about at full tit.

Took me back to my days in the West of Scotland where the RAF flew exercises almost daily over the Kyles of Bute (with Submarines the size of tower blocks underneath)
