2 wheel madness

Im looking for some feedback from rsvr owners (or prevoius owners).
Sold my trumpy yesterday and have been looking at thou sport bikes to replace it with.

Had been toying with the idea of CBR1000, R1, SV1000, VTR etc..... that was of course until i saw an aprilia rsvr in my price range and now i just cant seem to get it out of my head.

Do i have tunnel vision or are they that good?

I rode an rsv today and loved it but i dont really know much about aprilia's so id appreciate any info or problems to look out for when i check this one out tomorrow.

Cheers.

Have talked to him already, he's saving it for me till i look at it as he's had a couple of guys offering cash on the spot (more than i would do in his position id have to admit) which puts me in the position tomorrow of not knowing what faults (if any) to look out for but having to hand over my hard earned on the spot.
Cheers for the re-inforcing reply:2thumbsup

Depends on year the 03 has bigger valves & Radial brakes & of course abit more refinment from the 2000-2002 RSVRs but they are still all very good the 2000 did warp brake rotors when used hard not sure about the later 01-02s . Like anything good service history & bike been in good condition chain , sprockets tyres etc . Check what mods have been done & what Eprom the bike is running in its ECU { Computer } Brought my 03 with 8k on the clock & now 35k done nothing to it but tyres & oil /filters . If an Ohlins model see if they have had service & check OZ race rims for any damage as they can dent if hit pot holes at speed .

I've always wanted an RSVR myself. Problem is, here in the 'States Aprilia isnt as big a brand as I imagine it is in New Zealand so its harder to find dealers with tech staff that know the bike really well. Thats the main thing thats held me back from getting one.

Example: Big time dealer in Raleigh has only ONE RSVR.....and its been sitting awhile. I wouldnt want to take it to them for the 600 miles service if you know what I mean.

If thats not a problem in NZ then I'd say go for it. No reason not to. Its an awesome motorcycle and is prolly the best way to get into Italian exotica at the moment.

GSXR's, R-1's, Blades.....shit man, those things are a dime a dozen. Everyone has one. Get on an Aprilia and go your own way.

What's the problem with the link plates?

Looks like a standard setup to me. Where are they breaking and has it been proven it's a design fault?

Part #2 in your attached diagram is breaking

If this is just a case of a crap casting method used then this should be easily overcome by replacing them with decent (and polished) stainless steel right?

Yeah that's what I figured - that's the link plate.

Is it a case of extreme shear forces causing a failure where the bolt goes through? And what's the solution - have they created a new part which is stronger or is there an aftermarket solution?

FYI guys. Found a thread on rsvr.net forums where I got the link pic.

Scary reading. Definitely a problem on the 2004+ bikes.

Read yourself if you like. (http://forum.rsvr.net/forum_posts.asp?TID=2229&PN=4)

AF1 Racing link plates already on the way, courtesy of the information supplied by Scott2ride an kiwi biker on apriliaforum.com.
Read through there and studied up on all the 'charcters'...so thanks Sensei, sorted that out last week

But yeah its on the 04 model onwards so you'll be all good 2 wheel madness. No-one knows why yet so its all precautionary.
The plates that have broken seem to break on the piece that joins the upper bolt hole #2 with the dog-bone hole, if we use the diagram supplied earlier.

My Ape is basically an 03rsv. The only mechanical problem I have had was a failed water pump seal that resulted in oil and coolant leaking from the "weep-hole" on the r/h side of the engine. This was an expensive repair and seems to be a problem on some bikes. Not exactly an epidemic but when I posted the leak on the AF1 forum they recognised it immediately. Check out the AF1 site, there is heaps of info on each year.http://www.apriliaforum.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=12

Hey Clivoris, seen you on there. Spent last week reading through the threads.

Also a good site for FnKNAmerican. Dude theres guys on there from all over the States/Europe, and a bunch of Kiwis (Aussies as well. but nothings perfect).
I'm sure they'll be able to help you out with Dealers and local riders.

who fixed the bike clivoris??

TSS in the Hutt. I was worried about getting it done after reading on the web that the factory recommended procedure was prone to repeated failure. I discussed this with the tech/mechanic and got them to check valve clearances etc while they were in there. They decided on the best way to do it, in the end sticking pretty close to the factory recommendations but taking special care I think. Worth paying to get it done right.
