As we know the Government is going to sting us with 5c increase to improve the roads and than Auckland City are going to sting us with another 5c increase, so does that mean Auckland roads will be built twice as fast?

It doesn't go toward roading (sic) it just goes into the general fund.

They're lying as usual.

What do want more roads for...

Riding a bike that does 48mpg I am not going to sweat over petrol prices...$2.7ish a litre in UK...you may say they get paid more, however, $46 to fill up a bike is still a lot...let $100 plus for a car...

It is not going on roads (according to the propaganda), it is going on new trains and new ferries.

Why cannot "user pays" fund these? They are run by private companies anyway!

It will be going on election bribes and self serving junkets. Factor in lots of help for low grade immigrants so they are kindly disposed to voting for the ''bitch from belsen''

But take Auckland...having a better ferry service would make a difference....trains too...

If user pays funded this the cost to them would go up...it goes up when fuel does...and then they would stop using the services.

Govt funding in providing say more wharfs etc to improve ferry services is an investment in the future which is not always easy to account for but you have to look at the bigger picture

I completely agree with the fact that Auckland requires new ifrastructure for public transport. Finishing the motorway "loop" should be priority #1, and then do nothing more on the motorways. Let them block up. All monies then get put into upgrading the public transport system.

An additional tax on fuel is quite unfair. Everyone suffers the increase not only at the pump, but also in the supermarket where the additional transport cost will get passed onto the customer. Basically being charged twice.

The funding for trains and ferries should come from a different funding source.

The problem is that ferry / train providers are affected by increase in road spending which is effectively incouraging people to use the car...the number of times I ride past the new bus station in Takapuna and the car parks are now where near full...

So what happens is that use of ferries/ trains reduces...lack of fund for investment = reduced service = less and less enticing for population = more cars on roads etc etc

It is only fair that they get investment...

I mean on the North Shore they actually removed some bus services after the station was opened and after a fuss they have brought some back...

New motorways are not the answer in a place like Auckland which is really just a wide on / off distributory. Motorways should be for long distant travel, like Auckland to Hamilton to Wellington, not a 50km stretch with about 30 or so off / on ramps.

When the roads are busy on SH1 motorway up north...they will still suggest taking SH16...go the funding on motorways

Well petrol is something most need, and the current public transport system is hopeless...

Most will still choose to run their own vehicles, I mean look at how many busses you would have to chop and change on to get from one side of the city to the other...Also the layout of the city isnt very well structured because of urbanisation etc..

So, what happened to the (at least) 2 previous increases in petrol tax "to fund auckland transport". Paying for a lot of shiny arse useless civil servants in Wellington I suspect.

would be good IF they did use the money on improving the roads. Roads are shit over here......

Graham's quite right, motorways should be for Inter City links and dual carriageways should service city requirements. Motorways should bypass cities and towns at best and at worst just go right through or over.

Auckland shouldn't get any more "new" motorways. Just finish the loop (SW & Hobby Rd) and that is it. All the money from then on, goes into public transport.
If some sandal wearing, tree hugging poof from, say, Titirangi, comes along and demands a motorway, the answer is "piss off, use public transport".
We have seen it many times here. The public do not use public transport, so then the operators put the price UP "to cover costs".
Put the price down and then people will use it. The other approach is to show the cost of commuting in a car, including the cost of parking, etc Vs the bus or the train.
I don't know about the rest of the bus stations, but the Albany one is completely full and encroaching on the local roads. Typical planning for the future...

Auckland councils are only allowed to charge an extra 5 cents a litre. EVERY WHERE ELSE are allowed to charge 10 a litre. SO QUIT BITCHING. You ask YOUR councils what they do with the money.

Yeah I know the Takapuna one is new, however, you would expect that the money spent...presumably after research....would have a better response.

The problem with park and rides are they need to be in the right place...I mean Takapuna is close to bridge so maybe it's location is not soo great...if you are going to drive to Takapuna and want to go into the CBD you may as well just drive all the way...

Must admit the car park at Takapuna is hardly geared up for a rush..

The problem is public transport is being run by private profit seeking organisations. Services are in places where money can be made and they only have enough buses out there so they aren't running on half capacity and wasting money. I was stranded in Wellington last night since they didn't bother having the usual services since it was Easter. Saturday isn't a holiday, the usual services should be running! Had to spend $65 on a fucking taxi.
