i always hear sport bikers mocking harley/crusiers because they wear johnny reb boots and vests etc.....the same could be sed about sport bike riders, why do heaps of them wear full piece leathers and sport bike boots....because it goes with the style of bike/brand, you wouldnt see a harley rider in a full peice green kawazaki suit but kawazaki riders wear them and you wouldnt see a kawazaki rider in rebs and a harley vest but harley riders wear them....i think for most people they wear what goes with the bike

Nope. Bike's blue/white. Leathers are Blue/black and a little bit of silver. Gloves are blue and white. Boots are black and red. Helmet is either blue/black or black/white.

Typical? Far from it. Ask anyone who knows me.

I did however attend the 2003 HOG Nationals in Wellington if you'd like to talk about typical. 1400 identical leather vests, varying degrees of embroidery. 1400 black crash helmets. Only 850 pairs of black gloves however, the other 550 were fingerless. 2800 Johnny Reb boots lined up, that was a sight.

There were however three very cool cunts wearing bright blue hawaian shirts. That was a welcome change.

Fashion whores and sheep.

Baaaaaaa.

Leather vests are a joke. I wore them for years then one day I looked at it and thought what the fuck is the use of this piece of shit, went down the shop and picked up a grey and black bike jacket, She's light, fits well, cool and comfortable. Plus its loaded with pockets. also picked up a modern set of gloves at the same time.

As for Johnny rebs, Shit little dancing shoes, My steel caps would crush them in every way.

so basically your gear does match your bike

bike :blue white
gloves : blue white
Helmet : blue white
leathers have blue and abit of black which would match the bike

The real question is being missed, not why you wear whatever - its why we mock eachother!!!!!
I don't wear vests & reb boots - and never will.
I don't wear flouro jackets - and never will.
I don't wear full race leathers for a quick ride up the coast - and never will.
I dont wear a hat(or other garment) with a zillion badges on it - and never will.
However I realise we are different and don't see the point in mocking them coz when you sit down and have a beer and yarn with most of them they are OK people.
We tend to mock people who are different coz we feel superior - or at least makes us feel superior.

Before you ask - my gear is black or black and grey(road jacket) and as the leathers were bought second hand by fit not colour they are black and the helmet was black coz the blue one that did match my bike was a size too large.
OK -so I wear BLACK - go ahead and Mock me!

Simple answer ,was said above ,because it is just what is predominantly worn on those bikes.

Same with those German helmets ,you wouldnt see many japo riders wearing one of them ,but 90% of HD riders do .it is what it is i guess.

Mind you ive seen a growing amount of riders on triumph speed triples wearning vests and a german helmet ...

me personally ,well i wouldn't wear pink leathers on a yellow bike .... put it that way

Saw 3 on our ride today. Plus a Triumph Speed Four rider.

yea see alot of the triumph speed four riders around in "trademark" Harley gear ,even with the "Half helmet" ,it doesnt look out of place .

but in relation to the thread ,their is no different clothing guidelines for "sport riders " and "cruisers" just a cultural identity type thing that everyone who rides Harley davidson bikes ,rides them for in the first place ,so the clothing style comes with it

Wll, I will admit to being completely out of the loop when it comes to biker fashion, Generally I ride alone or just with one or two others, and I haven't been into a dealership for many years so I have no idea what the people are wearing.

But I know a lot of people that ride, and I see a lot of bikes on the road, But I almost never see a German helmet...

Well be it German helmet or half face they are both the same thing in reality .

and i guess it would depend on where ya ride and who with.

me personally ,i ride on a daily basis all year round ,and generally see a larger amount of harley riders with half face helmets then full face to be honest. catches my eye especially in the winter months when my teeth are jittering from the chill coming inside the vents and some guys just have a scaff covering their face.

The vest was/is a good choice in warm climates to reduce wind blast effect at lower speeds on unfaired bikes, and Rebs are a practical boot for many situations. But it has become a bit of wank factor lately.
eg: dude turns up to the Blues Fest on a stinking hot Easter weekend wearing a "Dri z Bone" full rain coat and all accessories. WTF.(yeah, he was a "born again Harley rider)
I've owned mine for 20 odd years, (actually, it's a Thomas Cook. Better in MHO), and wear only when it's pissing down, or cold as. Triumph rally was a good example.

Actually, think I'll pass, those real ones are bloody heavy, can't imagine riding with a legit one for any distance. And the straps leave a lot to be desired.
Mind you its still warm, I'll wear my SS officer's cap......damn, the wind will blow it off.

...agreed with you ,in the fact that modern half face helmets are far from a german helmet ,but i was not referring to modern helmets , i was comparing to half face helmets that people may predominantly see worn by harley riders. this is why i said german style helmets in the first place.

Feel free to wear whatever you want too.

I have both cordura or leather to choose from, not worried about the style factor,i.e doesn't have to be Alpinestar so it's cool or Spike etc.Just clothing which is comfy and does the trick. So if a image is what I am expected to ride too it could be true,if I had a Harley I'd still use the same gear,as quite a few guys have done, saw a couple of Harley dudes a week or so ago, they had multi coloured lids not matt black ones.To guys stopped yesterday for lunch where we were, all three(2 guys,1 lady)had matt black lids, jeans and black jacket, not part of a gang, not intimidating, but still dressed for the road, stereotypical yep,but good guys,if they rode a sportsbike you wouldn't know the difference,so many riders wear similar stuff.

Sorry bud but you sound like a stereotyping moron. If you look closely without your rose tinted sunnies on the vests are quite different and not everyone, in fact quite a few wear them, some choose to wear helmets that make you look like a canary (fuck knows why?) and the glove thing - who gives a ratz ass. Yep, that is weird. Perhaps because the internet thingy makes it feasible to mock people anonymously? And because 30 years ago if you had a bike you always looked out for other riders who looked out for you and stopped when you broke down (as we did regularly, especially on Brit bikes). These days, not so much.

I, too, belong to the "We are all motorcyclists" group. Wear what you want, who cares what others wear, who cares what others think of what I'm wearing.

I guess I'm a riding stereotype on my sportsbike in 2 piece zip together leathers and race rep helmet.

But you know what? I don't wear/own black clothing of any sort. Just personal choice.

I've always found that if you park next to other bikes, take the time to look at them, then scan around for the owner (easy to spot) and say something like, "nice bike, where are you headed?" you can instantly leap past the whole Harley vs jappa thing. If someone responds to this with a stoney face and a grunt, well, that is their problem- don't make it yours!

Those are my thoughts.

Those people are still around - just the other day I was parked up using my cellphone when some young fella on a rice burner pulled up to ask if I was ok. Good on him.

I see no point in wearing a leather vest unless you have a patch on the back otherwise it would spoil a good jacket.

At least sport bike riders will never EVER utter the phrase "I like these chaps, but I'm looking for ones with more tassels".

Yep, that is weird. Perhaps because the internet thingy makes it feasible to mock people anonymously? And because 30 years ago if you had a bike you always looked out for other riders who looked out for you and stopped when you broke down (as we did regularly, especially on Brit bikes). Ahhhhh agree the safety of the internet....Making a statement to another person already knowing the very worst they can do is abuse/reply/red rep ect....Staple diet of most KBers and yes I have eaten from this table too when im Troll hungry.

I say before we became a nation of "Oh your words made me feel bad :baby:"....It was quite normal to give shit to your work mates rugby team mates bike mates....A shared understanding that comes from knowing someone and that its just a joke.
Between this the trolls knowing that the chances of meeting you is quite small and there being no app available yet to reach though the screen and smash some smart cunt(My personal option) all add up to Forum carnage.

Fucking hate Harley Fergusons as a bike and the mentality it seems to fester in SOME of their riders minds...But you can say that about any style of bike or rider...Personal choice.
Id still put my feelings aside and stop for any type of biker or driver and I have more than once...Not sure if this makes me a hypocrite or a human being with morals and I don't really care.I just feel good afterwards when I have been of some help.

Go on then enjoy the rides and don't worry about the gear you're wearing, no one else should.

It's all marketing in the end, "HD sell a lifestyle not a bike" blah blah blah to live the lifestyle you *have to buy our clothing from the Motorclothes (copyright Harley Davidson) online store.

Riding a sports bike you *have to look like Marquez with corporate sponsorship logos all over ya.

* You don't 'have to'

Agree you don't have to.

I ride an adventure bike wear a full onesie race suit Knee sliders Kevlar race gloves back brace ect ect Completely ruined the "Longway down"look Hot as fuck in summer esp offroad....Don't need it when upright but if the day comes that I do.....

Always a shame when A 'Look' 'Style' or want to be included in a group like all the other sheeple while claiming to be 1% Rebel and different to normal riders out weighs common sense safety and wearing gear that will protect you better and save your life.

I guess that makes me a 'Cross dresser'

Are some of you replying to posts that were written over eight years ago? I might go back and read the thread because there were some good dudes posting then and not all are still with us, either on KB or in the land of the living.

Still, replying to an eight year old post seems a bit hopeful.

Message to myself, don't read the last post first.

Looks like nothing much has changed as far as opinions and attitudes go in the last 8 years. :brick:

Every time I ride I wear my Dri-Rider jacket with protection in the important places, the Dri -rider pants needed some duct tape after finding the HD pipes even with the heat shields get hot.
My heavy work boots are cheaper than flash riding boots and are multi function and I wont ride without Good gloves.

I am pleasantly surprised by the enjoyment I "feel" belonging to a very large group of riders (24,000 plus Aus & NZ) and over one million world wide who all own same brand machines, the denim vest allows me to show others in this group that I am a member by displaying its recognised adornments, I am not sure if this makes me a wanna be rider, I don't really care, I am really enjoying my ride and time will tell whether I continue in the HOG world.

There's nothing wrong with wearing HOG patches, or HD ones etc. What seems to happen and it's rife in the HD 'world' is there are HD riders, and HardlyRideitson owners. These are often the 'weekend 1%'ers' we find irritating.
There's a guy at work who owns if not the fastest 'naturally aspirated' road going HD in NZ has to be in the top 3. It is a seriously quick bike! He's a 'HD rider', hell he's even getting ready to fit a GSX front end to it
Then you get the sub-3000km a year, wannabe HD badass, who buys all the 'gear' etc to ride to the local bar/hangout then home again on 'summer sundays'... but they are REAL bikers, who own REAL motorcycles, and like to inform everyone they are 'just that'.

I often get 'shit' for owning a canam spyder, which is fucking hilarious coming from the HardlyRideitson's....... When I dont own a car, and ride either that or my CB1300 every day, regardless of weather. But I'm not a 'real biker' .... fucking oath I'm not, I am a motorcyclist.

That's why sadly many riders have an 'issue' with HD owners.. the real HD riders are far outweighed by the......... :tugger:

It gets even more extreme than that. There was a guy in Auckland owned a Harley, when guests visited his house, they would be shown his bike. He never rode it, and I mean never. He used to pay a guy I know to ride it to the testing station for warrants.

He probably referred to himself as a Harley owner rather than a Harley rider. I hope.

Now that seems bizarre,

I often wondered about Hugh Hefner being similar, all those nice toys to look at but he probably didn't ride them all. lol

Awesome, thanks for that, That gives me some understanding.
My first decision toward getting back on a bike was leaning towards either a Spyder or a sidecar, I went with the sidecar, I had concerns my busted up ankles would not allow me the experience of motorcycle riding again.

Mainly gear shifting and foot brake, and of course holding the bike up. After pushing hard with my rehab training and getting back into my other passion, Kyokushin, I found I could do the important things, not flash but within reason. The HD came into my life completely by accident, was something I had never contemplated.

I was looking at pre 75 bikes, with my left ankle being fully fused, I thought right foot gear shift was my best option, but the bikes are expensive these days, then I remembered, oil leaks, crap electrics and spending hours pissing around with them, Hence the W650 purchase, bullet proof engine, no leaks, good electrics, parallel twin, looks similar to a T120 and it even has a kick start.
