View Full Version : The butt question

I love my bike - except if I ride it for more than about 90 minutes in one sitting, and then I get the arse-ache from hell. So my noob question is this - is this something I'm going to adjust to with more & prolonged riding (ie HTFU) or does my bike seat need professional attention of some kind?

Pardon my rudeness, but maybe your butt needs professional attention of some kind?

had the same problem
got a sheepskin seat cover - problem solved - my butt now has a near 6 hour endurance [can't believe i actually said that - BACK you slavering dogs!! :( ]

------ but then, i don't drag my butt off the seat going around corners etc .... might be a tad problematical if you wanna do that ..... [using your own butt, of course ...]

Most 250 seats are uncomfortable. Best bet is to get the seat re-padded with extra foam or you can buy 'gel' filled seats.

Well that is very surprising to me. My Wifes GT250R or my GT650R is very comfortable in the butt and back area, even after an extensive trip. Different story on the wrists, particularly when going slow.

I think ur ass will harrr-den after time. Same applies for wrists on a sportbike.

Just get a bike that doesn't have fucked ergonomics.

Seriously.

Have you sat on one?

I'm not just trying to poke sticks, I find the general riding position quite comfortable. It's just that the seat seems to be too short or something and the harder, less foam-filled section towards the rear of the seat eventually gives me a sore arse, specifically in the posterior of the posterior.

BTW as a 250 cruiser it's not that little, but still smaller than I'd prefer.

When it comes to upgrading make sure you test ride a number of bikes with different capacities and engine configurations. The V-twin revs pretty low and doesn't vibe as much as a single pot but on the other hand an inline-4 sewing machine might not sound as nice but the vibes could be considerably less.

As for me I like my GT250R and found that "ride fitness" set in after about six weeks and 2500km from never having ridden before.

Check what you're doing with your butt. I used to have the same problem. A sheepskin gave me longer arse-endurance but still got sore eventually. (I actually scrapped the sheepskin idea after it slipped off during a ride and got minced between sprocket and chain ... unseating the chain in the process.)

I've since found that if I sit on the seat and make sure my buttocks are on top of the seat rather than sort of hanging down the side (pretty picture huh?) it's a lot more comfy. Just clench your butt cheeks together when you climb on board and see if it makes a difference. What I think it does is just puts more flesh between the frame of the seat and your pelvis.

Eat more hamburgers..
Normally keeping the weight on your backside works...takes the weight off your legs and feet...maybe get a soft seat
I cop it in the kidneys after a long ride..
might get a belt and c how it goes

most seats on any bike get uncomfortable , especially jappas .

my bandit is a great seat and comfy , but you dont get sore ,you get a flat arse .
i got a piece of 25 mm soft foam put under the cover . lots better but still about 2 hrs straight ride you get a flat arse .
try this .

get a piece of firm foam about 10 mm thick
cut to size and twice as long as you need , then fold it in half
or get a piece 20 mm firmer foam
i made a polar fleece pocket like cover , put the foam in it and its a great cushion.
i put 2 wide bits of elastic on it so you caqn slip it on to the seat , wont fall off

There's some a lot worse than most Jap bikes and some of them cost a shit-load more dough. As somebody else said though BMW rule where comfort is concerned. Shame about their looks

Apart from which, if the original poster is riding in jeans that could be a problem on longish rides that stitching on the pockets get etched into the cheeks of your arse. Of course if your wearing riding gear that shouldn't be a problem...

My wifes' back is chiropractors nightmare (motor vehicle accident), and my paragliding back injury is not much better, yet our Hyo's give us no problem AT ALL. Our 95+96 Hilux Surfs are much LESS comfortable and give us far MORE grief than the Hyo's. I did nearly 700km's around east cape yet still no problem. AT ALL.

Really mate, there is no need to be outright derogatory. Have you even ridden one even ?

Yeah i dont see the point in spending a lot of money on a seat , just spend a little and if it takes 3 goes to get it kinda ok, well 100 dollars is cheaper than a new seat

Just move your arse around on the seat slightly every 20 minutes or so.

Backward, forward, right, left. Theres 80 minutes of comfitable riding and then you can go back to the original position and rinse and repeat.

Trick to doing this is to start moving around before your arse gets sore.

I normally sit on the back of my bf's bike for quite some time. Once I tried shoving a pillow down my leathers for a trip from Auckland-Taupo and then back in the same day. 6 hour ride in total I think in the end. I still had a sore arse by the end of it but I seemed to last longer and didn't complain as much as I normally would without the pillow. Pillows ftw. Woot!

Those seats are uncomfortable.

I had a GV and had the same problem. I used to straighten my legs and get my butt slightly off the seat for a while.... it helps.

Frequent stops help, but something needs to be done to the seat if you want a long range tourer... great bike to learn on though...have fun!

this is one place that statement applys.
You are new so sitting for long periouds of time in the same positiom.
of course your butt is going to protest!
Give it time for your body to adjust, comfort comes with acceptance that this is a normal position for it.
Did you legs protest the first time you ran 10 miles?
also think
Your butt is protesting the first times it is siting in the same position for 100 miles!
I bet you would not be moaning about sore butt muscles if it was a spunkie lady under your ass that you were riding for miles!

I'm sorry, but I gotta ask... Just how did you arrive at these precise areas? Was there some kind of monitored study, or just old trial and error combinations?

More sensibly, the problem might be caused by tension in the concerned area, or restricted blood flow- er, like by tight clothing...

Loved my last bike. But do have to say the new one is much more comfortable to ride. First thing I noticed was the seat had thicker padding and was softer.

or a BMW!

It's all lies. The way they choose the head of the seat design department at BMW is as follows.
All candidates line up and the HR guy walks along and whacks each on the arse with a piece of 4x2. The one that doesn't scream gets the job.

Once your bums numb it don't get ant numba.... :)

Did the grand challenge and after 6 hours or so you kinda get used to having no feeling in your arse. Makes the next 18 hours more tolerable. Only took me 19 hours though.

I'd recommend the AirHawk if you're planning on doing some bigger distances for touring etc. I got one a couple of weeks ago for my SV before doing the Wellington, Taupo, Napier, Martinborough loop and it was well worth the investment.

Very comfortable, no pains or niggles at all and the only reason for stopping was the need for petrol!

just tried it , i felt that alot of the soreness was due to the hairs being pulled because they were sticking to my legs etc?
Doesnt make a lot of sense but , hey it works
i know you wanna try it ..
I dont expect anyone to pipe up and say thanks it worked for me ,but hey you are welcome.

This surprises me because the GV is big for a 250 and the seat seemed comfortable to me when I sat on a couple in the shops. Maybe you cannot adapt to sitting cruiser style. My GT250 is comfortable, even after 4 or 5 hours. I have never owned a cruiser and maybe never will unless I could somehow test ride a cruiser for several hours to see how my butt and back feel.

Saw a GV250 yesterday. The seat is lower than I thought. Many cruisers have a low seat. Riders with long legs or weak backs could find it a problem.

Have a similar problem with my bike which I put down to a combination of crappy ergonomics, poorly designed seat and the forward controls on the cruiser. And being a shortarse whose legs are stretched somewhat to reach said forward controls (which I think has more to do with the problem than anything else).
Initially I thought it was a case of breaking in - both of my arse and the seat, seeing as I hadn't ridden for a few years. Soreness and numbness started to set in after as little as 45 mins in the saddle, and became pretty bad, almost unbearable, after I'd gone 300k's or so. :crybaby:

Having clocked up 9000km in 4 months, I thought my butt would have HTFU'ed. I'm getting a custom seat (eventually), but in the meantime I bought a sheepskin off Tardme for $20, doubled it over and bungied it to the seat. Testing ground was Auckland to Wellington in one go. Other than standard pit stops for gas and lunch, managed it in one go, and was no more sore than if I'd taken the cage. Blardy magic !
On the return trip I was getting a bit sore by about the 2/3 stage, but just had a 30 minute coffee stop and rode the remainder.

Just had my 650 seat done at McDonald Motor Trimmers in Tauranga. Excellent! No sore bum on the way home to Auckland, and my heels are much closer to the ground now as they sculpted the saddle a little for me. My behind used to get so sore on long trips that i'd lie on the petrol tank from time to time to take the pressure off my botty! Dont' need to do that now.

I still reckon you can't go past sheepskin - few years ago our GL1000 had a piece of four by two for a seat, we had seriously no money - chopped up an old car seat cover and sewed straps on to it, tied it around the seat. Worked a treat even on my (as it was then, sigh!) skinny little arse.

ive found i always get a sore arse and back if ever riding a bike with a cruiser type riding position, seems to be the 'vertical back' thing
on sportier type bikes...on problem! probably explaning why the
owners of 250r and 650r hyosungs say they dont have this problem.
having your feet tucked up underneath works a bit like suspension
and having the upper torso weight over the tank lets the arms
take some of the load.
which is why ive always found sports tourers the most comfy i guess.
'corban' might do a touring seat for your bike, but theyre not cheap...
