At a recent neighbourhood xmas bbq i was talking to a mid 50's woman about a particular well known local winding road. A lot of heavy trucks frequent this road and if You get stuck behind them in the cage, there are no passing lanes for about 5 or 6 mins or so. it was in this context that she unleashed the pearler upon me..."oh, i just switch off"
hmmm...

one reason i dont stay in traffic behind trucks/caravans/boats for too long, they either drift off like your friend or attemp crazy suicidal passing attempts coming up to a blind cresting corner.

You should have just smacked her in the face and then claimed a "war flashback" was responsible.

And she's not talking about her cellphone...

I think thats the problem with most drivers in such a situation, only wished they would keep left so I can get past. Last week seeing the autotrons driving down the motorway staying in their own wee small space looking O so interested reminded me that I do live in a great place in this wonderful country.

Some do on bikes too - I came up on a couple of BMWs on SH16 on saturday,an 1150GS and a tourer behind a truck - they had no intention of passing, they were just sitting behind the truck, not monitoring the road ahead for passing opporunities...I moved up between them, sitting to the right to scan the road, then got in a safe pass when the road was clear.Takes all kinds eh?

Problem is that too many people follow too closely, so (a) they can't see to pass if they're behind a truck, bus or whatever, and (b) they are too close to get up to overtaking speed by the time they get near the vehicle to be passed.
Used to be that people knew all this stuff, like following at a sensible difference, how to overtake, etc.

lol,
i promise i wanted to, but the truth is i was too dumbstruck to think of anything other than moving myself and accompanying beer in the direction of someone with a braincell.

Normally those types that 'switch-off' are the ones that after following a truck for 6km suddenly 'switch-on' and overtake said truck at the very end of the last passing lane or clear straight bit of road before 6 more km of winding, blind corner type road :shit:

Don't know if this counts as switched off or not but last night on the way home on the Hutt Road I observed a woman driving a van (Toyota Previa IIRC) load of kids while blowing up a beach ball! my inital reaction was the air bag had gone off, but airbags aren't blue with white stripes. I'm just so glad I was on the other side of the road.

I was overanalyzing my riding. if i didnt switch off a bit i wouldnt be able to enjoy my riding so much. it was that or leave the bike at home and take the car. so i happily stop thinking about it and start just riding the bike. you see you need to let both hemispheres of the brain work together to do your best if your constantly thinking i shoulda braked less gone in wider opened the throttle sooner you'll never get there with a big grin on your face.

Firstly , and most importantly where was my invite to the bbq. (hehehe) Secondly did it get lost in the mail.
Thirdly, I see it alot out our way, people just toodling along in there own little world. Im surprised they dont drive straight past their own house.
I truly believe people forget there are other vehicles on the road. The classic I find is the guy who realises he was supose to turn and just dives left or right depending where he was intending to go. Completey forgetting the vehicles behind him, or believes everyone already knows where he is going. I compare people to horses that have blinkers on (those covers on the eyes to stop horses getting distracted) They are most of the time in their little bubble in their little world, where they only have to look straight ahead.
I also love drivers who believe they are in a Mack Truck, and swing that big rig into there driveways. Shame its only a Toyota Hiace van.

lol, the xmas bbq was held for residents on my road. You mighta felt out of place unless you had your redbands on, but there was more than enough "good on ya mate"s to go around.. lol. apart from that it was sorta entertaining but i had to take the missus home at 10:30 cos she had the Johnny red speed wobbles. I'll be sure to register Your interest for future barbies tho...

it'll be those roads that you'd only be too happy to be on the bike eh Dave? Gotta love that 'instant pass' button on the right handlebar :)

hopefully will have the parts in two weeks but one of those arriving from the US is the tank decal so there will be a delay while i get it from customs to reflections and then painted so its touch and go as to whether it'll be all together before Christmas

Picture this.........
Auckland Southern motorway southbound just after the Newmarket bridge.
6.30 pm Tuesday
Guy in a light 4WD
Reading his map trying to work out where to go
Changing lanes without seeing the motorcyclist
Can you spot the fuckwit???
Oh and thats not mentioning the three people I saw within the next 1 km who were on their cell phones
Luckly said motor cycle enthusiast actually knows to look out for morons like them and avoided all safely.
Another day succesfully spent avoiding disaster at the hands of an idiot:)
But hang on, are we not the ones who get blamed when we crash????:finger:
