i think a few people might be interested in these lists,
anyone imported there own bike before?
i bought a couple across a few years ago in a van, but they were race bikes and trials so they did not need to be registered.
now i am looking at doing it again, but for some sport bikes and motards.
the attached lists are FOB japan, so obviously freight/customs ect needs to be added ontop.
what do i need to take into account as far as registering them here?
cheers,

mods have moved this to online trading for some reason, i wanted a discussion about sports bike importing, but it looks like that just won't be.

Jimmy mate, I've just imported a new Triumph Tiger ABS from the USA. It's not arrived yet however I got over 80c per NZ$ so I have saved around 25% inc GST + Shipping.

You just have to make sure you've got all the ownership papers. My old man is currently locked in a deathstruggle with the American DMV over his imported bike. Turns out the particular state he imported it from doesn't require any form of ownership papers/history - but NZ does!

Those prices are awesome compared to NZ prices! Interesting to note how many 400's are on that list though, and the almost non-existent number of 600's. In NZ we have heaps of 600's and hardly any 400's, I don't think we've had any new 400's come out in NZ for quite a while, if ever?

NSR250 MC16, $100!!! Awesome
NSR250 MC28, $6000. Oo-er...
Hopefully the 2 strokes come down in price when learner licensing hits, I want another project bike.
The big thing rego-ing them here is the "MR2A" document. It's the must have when getting a car or bike road legal here. As for acquiring one, I've yet to find that out.

If they can help out with wrecks, they might be able to help with imports. Contact them if you're keen.

I think if total is 5 then it is excellent, 4 is good condition, 3 is need some attention, 2 not sure and 1 usually means heavily modified bike (race bike).
Generally a grade 4 is pretty good.

Yes Jim, registration is very easy and handled through the AA.
Ownership papers plus proof of purchase are important and you have to pay the GST.

correct on the grading there, anything that is a 4 is ready to ride, anything that is a 5 indicates show room condition

I think max is 7 which is new. 6 would be nearby pristine condition. Cannot remember...check out the european bikes they seem to be cheaper than the japanese and from the grade seems to be in better condition. Anyone wanna buy my bike so I can buy a ducati or aprillia from the list.

06 CBR1000RR 840,000Yen, 80 yen to the dollar, $10.5K NZ plus freight , insurance, NZ GST, Vinning & rego, there's alot of risk for a few grand.
It won't go smoothly for everyone.

No mentiion in this thread about shipping. How much does it cost and whats the best way. Would be nice (cheaper) if you could get a bike into one of the big containers coming down but if you ship it as a one off then you have the crating costs (unless you want to find bits missing and broken when it gets here.
Don't forget that GST is on the cost of the bike PLUS freight & insurance.
My son is going up to japan over Christmas and is marrying a Japanese girl so might even be able to swing a nice NC30/35 one day- buring privately might be even cheaper if you have someone who knows what they are doing.

Me and my partner darren have imported the last 3 bikes we have from the states. I'm about to bring in an 08CBR600rr Liquid Silver graffiti one or another R6 - the flame yellow one. Costs us about $11k max for the bikes showroom fresh and in a factory crate. Add transport to the port, the shipping costs like container fees and fuel surcharge, the paperwar fee for the US title docs, The port fees here in NZ, the MAF and Customs fees and the GST on EVERYTHING combined, and you get to add another $3K or so.
$14K for an $18K bike thats the limited edition version is just fine in my books. Reset the dash displaysto metric - which is done with the push of a couple of buttons -swap out the huge USA edition indicators for flush mounts and waalaa, one enviable unique in NZ ride.
I have brought in a hotbodies modded low km (mile) R6 Raven and an R6-S for myself so far.
I'd definitely recommend it if you can stomach the risks involved with purchasing online.
I can post up the quotes we have on shipping if needed too.

Pretty good deal. I got my 08 CBR for $15.5k here but the Graffiti version would have a premium and probably wasn't imported here at all. I heard only one Hanspree Ten Kate replica was imported so you'd have to go offshore for that too.
As far as I can tell the only thing you lose going with a US model is the hazard light switch and the HISS security system.
The NZ model comes with stupidly large indicators too. Must get around to replacing mine!

that's interesting
any idea why they don't have the HISS on the US models?

its illegal, its against the constitution to discriminate against thieves by making it harder for them to earn a living.

If your importing from Japan Kiwi Car Carriers offer a roll on roll off service for bikes just like cars.Go to there web site for prices. FOB price & Freight plus GST plus port services charge and a small amount for customs entry fee etc. Allow about $200 for Vin. Not sure about price for rego

I am able to bid for bikes on yahoo auctions in Japan and bring them to NZ if anyone is interested. It would cost roughly $3000 + bike price + GST, ready to ride (6mo rego).

Not a clue... I just remember thinking it was weird when I skimmed the manual.

You'll really need to research your models.
I know the Hornet 900 market in NZ - there are a couple on your list.
Both 2002's (non adjustable suspension year) 31-45,000 on clocks and work out at NZ $5600 - plus import costs.
Not worth it for those prices if you are looking at around $7 landed.

something to keep in mind bring in bikes from the states and japan. You may find yourself a "tadd" disapointed in the performance.
The anti polution laws especially in california makes for quite low hp bikes and the japs seem to set em up to only do 190km/h
This might not apply to all bikes but in my experience it does

Thanks for the imput but your not really telling us what we want/need to know. What sort of bike have you imported and where from?
Many thanks in advance
I am guessing that savings are only available if you are importing a more expensive bike?

Also the jap hornets are low power models. Around 86hp.
