Personally I would say avoid it, my gear is a couple of years old but the seams have started to come apart, I wont be replacing it with the same.

As above, the stitching on my spool jacket is going to pieces too. I won't be buying that brand again.

I know someone who's spool one piece stitching came to pieces while crashing bucket racing.

Another vote for getting something other than Spool.
My pants are breaking/broken in all the places where it doesnt matter, but its still very inconvienent not having the liners domed into the bottom of your pants, and the tag on the zip on my left pocket snapped off after 3 months.

I can vouch for this. I came off last weekend wearing a 3 week old jacket. The seam popped from waist to shoulder on Right side and I was only doing 40 k.....fast enough to break collarbone and 3 ribs LOL.:first:

I would give my Spool cordura gear an average rating. After 2 years[not worn all the time] there are a few loose threads, but it has proved almost waterproof in one massive downpour and general wet weather riding. I have Spool leather sports gloves and they are great. 2 years of riding and still in ok cond. Sounds like Spool leather wear is to be avoided however.

I had Spool Sp23 gloves, best gloves I have ever had, crashed 4-5 times in them and finally had to replace them when they wore out after about 5 years use
I now have Spool Tifon Gloves and think they are crap compared to the old ones, stitching was starting to go from the day I got them and I've worn a hole in one of the fingers after 4 months

I've had had a set of spool 2 piece leathers for about 4 years now and in that time i've had two crashes wearing them - once on the road and once on the track. In neither case have any of the seams come undone.
So in my case I can't fault them.

I've had a two peice for about 2 years now. No off's yet, but I'll keep a good eye on it to see if there is any deterioration.

I've got nothing but praise for the stuff - have had my one piece race suit for about five years now, still looks as good as the day I bought it, no sign of deterioation at all...
Starts to look dirty pretty bloody quickly due to the colours it is but its nothing a quick wipe down with a damp cloth & some warm soapy water doesn't fix...
From the sound of things the quality has taken a bit of a dive...?
Cheers

make sure you offer the leather some conditioning after doing that dude, you can dry it out quickly. Its the right way btw, but just condition the leather after washing.
Mothers do a good easy to apply conditioner, either that or a bees wax type product.

I'm a bit surprised by people who think cordura will be fine after a crash. The stiching/fabric is really a "one crash wonder", (their leathers I have no experience with).
FWIW, I have been using a Spool cordura for 4yrs. Road and Adv riding. It has been a good jacket, with pretty good "light fall" protection.
Waterproofing goes like this:
Wash only with approved cordura cleaner.
Spray cordura waterproof sealer on jacket/pants.
Let it dry o/night. Job done.
There is better gear for sure. But for budget gear, it's fine.

Gidday Quasi,
I nearly always  give them a bit of a rub down (once properly dry) with a kit I got from the U.S.A - done by a crowd called Auburn Leather
Its a fairly old skool 3 step system comprising of a Cleaner, Weatherproofing & Conditioning agent & lastly a restorer which brings them back up like new...
Could possibly be why they have lasted as well as they have...
Is this Mothers stuff a point, squirt, buff sort of thing...
Cheers

Have a chat to Sketchy_Racer (Gumpy), he came off at Manfeild and slammed into the wall feet first in his Spool gear. Reckons if it wasn't for the knee protection that the gear had he probably wouldn't be able to walk :pinch:
I know his seams went, which seem to be a common occurrence, but I know he also has had quite a few offs in his... So you might wanna send him a PM if you want his personal opinion.

It will be interesting to hear what they say about it as a new jacket popping after a 40km/hr slow bin........watch this space!!!!!:blip:

Saying that... ALL Leathers have extreme knee armour.
The older Spool stuff is a joke, but from what ive seen, the newer stuff might have improved. I really hope so anyway!

Hahahahaha.........They recommended I replace it with a Jacket from their Diamond range by Magna. This they say is more able to withstand the "rigors of crashing" due to its welded seams, as opposed to stitched seams on my jacket...........and just how much is this item prey tell????? Red Burgler quoted me $700, but wait Darbis offered 25% discount making it $525.
I took my Burst Spool jacket into Northshore canvas at Henderson, and they restitched the seams for me and only charged me $20.........TOP MARKS GUYS!!!!! that was all I was looking for in the first place from Darbis but I guess the almighty $$$$$ means more than a happy customer....I'm just pissed that the day b4 my Bin I spent $200 on another new spool jacket for my partner....i'll think twice about Darbi's next time.:angry2:

Well, I’ve owned four sets of Spool One Piece suits, with both the RRS1 and RRS2 (you can differentiate between the models, the RRS2 has two front zips) and had many crashes in them. Two of my fastest crashes were in the RRS1 (the suit originally criticised for its tendency to split seams on initial hard impact), and in both of these (Highside in forth through old Taupo esses, and a 200km/h slide into turn One at Teretonga in Invercargill) the suit was intact, enough so that I only had it repaired for friction damage and holes later, still fine to race in. One suit, my original RRS1, had 6 or 7 race crashes, and only ever needed to have one seam restiched, on my arse where I wore through it sliding. I had one lower speed crash in an RRS2 at manfeild, where I tumbled because when I hit the ground and with the lower speed the leather gripped rather than slid (which is why ALL gear has more tendancy to split at lower speeds) and I broke the seam along my arse and thigh.
I’ve ridden in other suits, this year I wore a Leda suit, for sponsors and colour commitments at almost last minute. I like them, but I also paid closer to $2g, not under $1000 for it. Other branded suits I have had have needed repairs on stitches after crashing.
I think the point plenty of people are missing is that the gear you wear is sacrificial for your own skin’s safety. Yes, the less you pay for gear, the more chance it has of splitting – you make that choice when you buy your gear. In leather suits, I expect to need repair if I crash in it.
Flathead, the jacket you have is a Cordura item. It is designed for weather protection, with armour for your safety and to meet EU standards. Nowhere is it advertised to remain intact in a crash. Does your Vulcan come with an Impact Protected label?? I think not. Do MotoGP riders use Cordura? Also, no. It’s not going to hold together in an impact – it’s a lot of very fine threads that get cut by the stitching thread when you hit the ground. Your crash was “only doing 40 k.....[but] fast enough to break collarbone and 3 ribs LOL.” Do your injuries not indicate your impact may have been quite heavy, forcing the material to grip the ground and break the fabric?
Also, you crashed in it! Was your bike damaged? Have you asked Kawasaki to replace that because it too was damaged in your crash? Get a grip!! Your attitude towards this matter is shit, here you are assassinating anything that moves when they don’t meet your ‘demands’...yet it seems to me that they have gone above what they should in offering you a discount on a superior product, maybe if it had split with wear only it would be a different story.

My Spool Cordura Jacket is about 2.5 years old and it's been awesome and been in some real crap weather.
Mind you, I guess I haven't tested it properly as I've avoided coming off so far!! Silly me.
