I think that it worked out to around a 10% discount. But I can't trust my memory too much with the mad-cow and all.

johnny burkhart and mark anderson will be keen as well,

dam thats expensive $500!

Clivoris

It's definitely a fair wedge to come up with at once. I figured that second hand it had to be worth $3-400 if I ever sold it, and at $30 a day to rent I'd get the money back eventually.

I used the battery (rechargable) one all winter series last year and it worked fine.... i guess if you run total loss it may factor in the one you choose, also if your thinking of resale value, a battery one would be the way to go over the hard wired direct one :)

Clivoris

I bought direct powered. Cheaper initial outlay. Nothing to charge before the meeting (imagine forgetting to do this) and with regard to resale, I wasn't sure about the life-span of the rechargeable batteries. I reckon rechargeable has advantages if you are running two bikes with one transponder. You only need to have a spare bracket and Bob's your Uncle.

ArcherWC

id prefer the hard wired one myself

AMB are first class arseholes. A few months back I enquired about distributing them over here but they wanted about 60 grand outlay for a shoddy 14% markup BEFORE expenses.

I got mine through the MNZ deal that was happening a few months back. I suggest you get the numbers together and forward the MNZ secretary/admin a list of names and suggest they organise another run. After all, it's them who've dicated we use a transponder that's not officially available here.

Otherwise if you're not claiming back GST you're as well buying them individiually from Australia and not declaring the GST on the import.

when the vicclub did the bulk buy last year we had to buy 30 transponders to get the 10% discount. that was a lot of money for the club to lay out with no guarentee that we'd get it back. Not sure if the club would have enough money for the outlay to go and do it again.

I think Tim Gibbes tried to bring some in too. but not sure if that worked.

So if you can get 30 people together, you may get a discount. else it may be better just to bring them in one at a time and see if you bypass the gst

My MX Club (RODNEY) got a Lion Foundation grant to pay for a whole lot for the club. these were then passed on to the members for huge discounts (about $100 instead of $350 for the MX ones). Could VMCC look at the same ????

true.... if we can get enough people to pre pay it should be ok though...

My guess would be that there were lots of kids involved in the MX club and the application was written up from the angle of youth development. We looked at it for the pokie money and we struggled to meet the criteria including the demographic of our membership. I may be wrong, so if someone wants to check this out and write the application please go hard.

Seriously folks, if someone wants to explore whether the Vic Club can get the purchase of some of these subsidised through some kind of funding, and then have the savings passed on to our members; feel free to check it out.

scott411
16th April 2008, 10:29
we did this as well when the Pukekohe club purchased their own amb system, (although we did not subserdise them as much as Rodney did)

it is easy to do with the origanl pruchase of the timing gear (loop decoder, software) to include some xtra transponders, i think it would be much harder to get charity funding for a extra personal transponders,

the second hand market for the mx transponders is pretty good, they sell easily, and people are getting nearly what they paid for them 3 years ago, i can not see why the road racing ones would be any different,

Clivoris
16th April 2008, 19:52
Who provided the funding?

One thing to watch out for is the differance in the "reading speed" .
Some are made for speed events like road racing and others are for mountain bikes and MX applicationd. The differance is the reading / transmitting speed of the units.

Is it definate that the MX units mentioned above were the TranX260 model? as they are generally dearer due to being more advanced than the slower reading / transmitting models.

Just a thought. Paul.

I think you may have misread. If you're referring to Archer's post above I don't think he intended to say that we should be buying the MX ones for $100 each with a subsidy, but rather just to point out that they got a pretty mean subsidy on those ones.

You are right that they have different reading speeds. The MX ones only read up to 120kmh, where as the 260 ones we use read up to 260kmh. I wonder if that will be adequate at Hampton Downs?

If its not, just put the timing loop somewhere slower, make start finish on a corner, it'll be fine, I swear

Nupp . I didnt misread or missunderstand. :argue:
The reason for the MX items being cheaper is because they are far less technical and they sell 20 times more of them (worldwide) so they are cheaper to manufacture. The subsity would only be possible because of these points.
The gap of manufacturing cost is huge but the differance of selling price is nowhere near the same , hence a discount / subsity is able to be negotiated for a bulk purchase.

As for Hampton, well id imagine we all have to buy the newer fancier version thgat reads fasterer , or , we may have to buy a speed limiter for the start straight at that track. Like a pit lane speed limiter , simple if you think about it aye !!!! ;)

ohh dear im getting all topical again

You Did indead miss my point. the reason they were so cheep for us, is we got $25000 from the Lion foundation to subsidise them, the actual transponders were i think only $20 cheaper for the bulk purchase.

HOLY SHIT!! ive just been through the process of getting one of these transponders and all up it cost me about $850!!!! I got the rechargable type so i could chuck it on diff bikes if required and once i had paid for it paid for freight converted it to nz dollars and now just got stung with tax $110 it has cost $850!! thats rediculous!!!!!!!!!

Nicksta
16th June 2008, 15:01
yup... most important part is to ask the Auzzies to list it as less than $400 NZD value or you get stung GST....

My MX transponder was A$351 = NZ$410+NZ$85:sick: (some government charge/s for importation)
Total NZ $505 ($15 to rent looks good value!!:Punk:)

Some companies are happy to keep the “value” under NZ$400? For “ease of import”. Don’t forget to ask for no local duty/GST when ordering parts/accessories – 17% England, 10% Aussie. (mmmmm, accessories:scooter:)
