Unswept road works

is it just where i live or are the road workers getting lazy not sweeping the left over sealing chip properly, there sweaping but not properly, usually leaving the centre line and sides of the roads, where bikes ride.
iv herd of one guy whos fallen off his bike because of it.
has anybody else noticed this.
if its cost cutting, not doing a final sweep, its a dangerous one.

Hell, in my area they leave the cars to do the sweeping.

It's not fun what-so-ever..

I've come inches from binning on it, I panicked and locked the rear which fish-tailed 90 degrees, then flipped back straight. That was a shit dropping moment.

Around these parts they either sweep to an inch of their lives or don't bother at all. Really odd if you ask me.

SH58 (Wellington to Hutt) just got resealed last week, and two days of 'car sweeping' later was up to 100kph. I hit one of those unswept centre line thingies rounding a corner at just under 100....then HMOGWTF.

Back wheel steps out precisely 20.35cms (trust me, I felt every millimetre) and leaves me snaking up the road (past an oncoming truck...but that was the least of my worries right then) hangin on for dear life until she straightens up about 20m later.

But did need to go to the loo as soon as I touched down at work.

Now I know why they call them road contractors...cos I've never felt my butt cheeks 'contract' so fecken much in my life. Thanks for doing a good, safe job guys...not :finger:

Oh and beware - 'tis the season for councils to spend up large on roadworks, as year end approaches and they haven't spent all of your rate $

Seems to be never ending road works being carried out on SH1 on the way up North - especially before Kawakawa. Also love it when they spray the roads to keep dust to a minimum, so when I get home I have lime splashes all over. Not good when you don't have a rear hugger and I have to spend hours getting all the crap out of the nooks and crannies at the back of my bike:crybaby:

Well as you say, they've been sweeping it AND two weeks after doing the work they still have "New Seal" warning signs out.

I use that road every second day and know to watch for the gathered pea metal on the edges and centre (where the traffic doesn't sweep it). I reckon that's just smart survival skills ... but you do have to be aware and you do have to think ahead.

... so how is it that people are falling off?

Jeez. That Haywards hill rework was a mess. I happened by it the day it was done and it's destroyed the whole front fairing paint job. It's a bloody mess. There's stone chips everywhere.

I was resorted to riding on the footpath due to the sheer ammount of loose metal on the stretch of road they did (further up the road has needed attendance for YEARS and they do just outside my street, which was absolutely fine? What the fucking fuck.)

I have so many new stone chips on my bike because of it, it fucking frustrates me man, really.

The best part is getting a handful of stones thrown right at your fucking helmet from oncoming cars. Not their fault, it's the fucking terrible shit roads, they actually came and repainted the lines on the road the other day which promtly DISSAPEARED due to it still being so loose.

The round about at greville road off ramp has been ripped up with stones and rocks all over the place. Nearly had an off as I went round.
But them there was nothing wrong with the next intersection I almost crashed at. Damn hot running girls took my attention away. Should have signs out for those too.

Te Maunga roadworks at Tauranga is dragging on for ages! What a nightmare going through there on Sunday evening... Water truck in full swing!

They've just done outside one of our gates too. Fortunately, we live on a corner and have an entry/exit on both streets, so I can avoid the stone chips.

what i love is when the cone guy is apparently stoned when he puts em out, and you end up riding through a cone maze with none of those blue arrows. great fun when your watching for potholes and blind cagers at the same time. ive nearly been collected twice by cagers who decide they dont need to stop and look when turning down the sideroad.

they did the road outside my work recently, which was in desperate need of attention [road ripples everywhere, literally. i couldnt get up the road without being flicked everywhere, which was great when being tailgated.] they closed off the bottom driveway so no one could get in or out, thus saving our forecourt, and sealed and swept numerous times. its now smooth as silk and lovely to ride on. no stones in the gutter either. wish theyd do the rest of town the same.

as an aside, they recently ripped up the footpath on my street and replaced it with concrete. they also ripped up everyones driveways by the kerb. theyve just replaced it with what looks like hot mix. i give it a month before they are back repairing potholes.

mmmmmmm...during the summer the tar was coming up through the roads around our place.....ina quiet country town 25kms south of blenheim....so they dumped enough 'dust'...and it is dust...like sand and slightly larger chips....all over the roads...it was about an inch thick. Even in the cage it was dangerous...the local boy racers found it and for weeks we could hear then doing laps around the block ripping it up. Its never been swept and its really really dangerous if you get out of the lines swept by the cages. Its so thick that the gutters are clogged and no storm water can run off....makes me wonder whats going to happen in winter when it pisses down. I still remember the look on a womans face when I went past her in the cage one day on a hot day and she dissapeared in a cloud of dust.....felt guilty about it cos she was pushing a pram....not my fault...but still.

Have you considered the concept of calling the local council and asking for it to be swept? During summer when it's flat-out busy it's easy to miss sweeping a site.

BBWWAHAHHHA your funny. The local council can't even provide water from the tap clean enough to drink. But yes...calls were made...several in fact by more than one resident.....and calls to the police about the boy racers....but being so far from town...by the time the cops get here they are gone. Everyting takes meetings and great lenghts of time in this district. Its a pain in the arse

Having had loads of local rd resealed in my area recently they seem to leave it 2 weeks for cars to "do the sweeping", come back with a sweeper that piles the gravel at the sides of the rd, and then the linepainter comes and puts the lines back. I think its an actual system they have got going.
Its a real pain for a motor-sickle, and even more of a pain for my cycling because even 3 months after the woodland's park rd reseal the sides are still gravel traps that present a real hazzard to bicycles & even bikes if you run wide.

Last year when the wife was on pillion I hit one of these gravel traps on another rd when overtaking and really stepped out the rear. I was not happy.

Yeah.
Find out who's responsible (council, Fulton Hogan, Transit) and hassle 'em till it's cleaned up. It's their job - make 'em do it.
