The Inline 6 thread got me thinking. What is/was the best sounding motorcycle ever made?
CBX1000 for me closely followed by VFR750 (early one). I'm such a honda fag. Sound clips appreciated.

BSA had a mean sound too.
Just something about the Brit bikes in the sound department. Might be the water or the weather but nothing else comes close.

Yup i must admit that is whats making me consider ducatis
i was going to go for a japper 600 but a nice 740 or 996 would go nicely in the garage, with twin carbon termignoni's (sp?) of course.
This one is going for 14k and i have been dreaming of it for quite some time **drool**

I used to have a site in my favourites at work that was soley bike sounds but alas another IT "upgrade" put paid to that.
Still gort this one though: http://www.cybersportbike.com/2/_sounds/soundsmenu.htm and scroll down as the menu appears off the bottom of the screen (looks like a blank page but it's not)
The ol' 6 into 1 CB-Flex1000 is a classic from my yoof, as is a big crackling two stroke.
Haha, I can remember going to a trackday and hearing a young guy thrashing a plain old CBR250RR with aftermarket exhaust, and at 19000rpm down Wanneroo's front straight the thing sounded amazing....if you disregarded the obviously slow doppler effect.
Hearing my HRC kitted VTR for the first time was probably what convinced me to buy it as much as riding it. Two Brothers pipes aren't renowned for being a good performance upgrade but they sounded fukkin' magificent.

get afew more cylinders and straight pipes. or they had an inline 5 125cc which sound awsome too, and that could be raced in buckets.
they also developed a 3cylinder 50cc. nuts!
having loads of cylinders and revs was the only way honda could get their 4strokes to keep up with the 2bangers.

Don't believe they ever did a six (triples and fours, yes), but am ready to be educated.
Looks like the Vees have it so far...the VMax motor is a gem, supercharged or not. Still a big fan tho of the '70's BSA/Triumph triples. One of the worst road bikes I ever owned (and I've owned some dogs) but the racer sound is gorgeous.

By the way finn, they TRIED to patent the sound. However they weren't allowed to and I believe were only allowed to patent the design of the engine that made the sound.
Honda ACE is a model purposely attempting to clone the harley sound, - can't remember how it did it though.

My favourite sounding bike was a custom built machine, it had a Leyland P76 V8 engine in it, and custom built baffled pipes, it sounded crisp and clean and you just knew it was going to move if asked, yet not to loud.
Yes Harley's have a sound of their own (thankfully), I have heard what I felt to be some nice ones but some of these things with the baffles removed or modified pipes to make as much noise as possible, nah they sound like rubbish imho.
Its fairly subjective, and different horses for courses.

Have you heard a stock Harley?
You probably wouldn't have noticed. They're quieter than a mouse. With all the noise emissions crap they probably have to come out of the factory like that. Apparently it's the dealers that take a big drill to the exhaust cause they'd have no hope of selling them otherwise. In fact, this bike I heard, the owner had to specially import the baffled pipes from HD since his 'originals' had a hole drilled in them.
I'm keen on a debaffled Buell. They've got the same obnoxious Harley sound right?

I'm more addicted to the sound from the air intakes together with an open exhaust system.
If you're ever been on a 996sps with no air restrictors and its more aggressive cams, and open the throttle fully, you can hear the airbox's low singing tone singing as the hemholtz resonance kicks in. It's pretty special. But I guess you have to be on the bike to hear it.

Good for you on the character comment!!!!
I might be just a little biased but as far as road-going bikes are concerned I agree on bevel-drive through Contis.
Maybe a Norton with pea-shooters as second.
I was sitting at Shingle Creek pub once when a Honda Six (I'm sure it had a six-into-six, would that be right?) took off and hammered it up the hill, you could see and hear it for about a k and a half before it disappeared.
That was glorious!!

I love the sound of the Triumph triples and the Ducati twins, but to this day, the nicest bike I've heard was a Buell S1 Lightning. It wasn’t very loud, but this thing emanated such low frequency sound, you’d end up with goose bumps every time it went past. I was informed that it was far from standard.

Just to take this full circle...I still think the best sounding production bike is the CBX: http://www.geocities.com/PixSounds/bsnd/cbx.wav ....though I am biased ;)
Next would be Ducati's and any decent triple like a Laverda or Triumph
As far as race bikes go, hearing 2 stroke GP bikes live still beats the pants off anything else.
Honary mention goes to the supercharged V-Max and the turbine bike gets a mention just for sheer insanity! :)

Mmmm not bad at all! I think anything that sounds a bit different is good, four cylinder four strokes are just so numerous while they don't sound bad they've just become too normal to really stir the soul. Reading through this thread the bikes that really score points seem to be the ones you just don't hear every day.

honda 1967 rc166. 250cc inline 6. 60hp and sounds awsome
Somewhere here I have recordings of the Guzzi 500cc V8 but it would be nice to have heard it for real. Then there was that period of extravagance in the 60s when Honda came up with a 50cc twin, a 125cc I L four and the 250cc six. That would have been special.
The litre Moto GP bikes were special too, sweetest sounding was the Suzuki V4 by a small margin, but they were all startlingly loud.
Of course if you spent too long listening to those you probably can't hear all that much these days

I tried to do the bizzo, and failed miserably. Your almost right with the TL thing D,they do truely sound awsome with the 2 brothers cans (early version) but have to say there is a Ducati that sounds better, not one built in the last few decades(they sound rubbish no matter what price the aftermarkets) but a 78 900SS with Contis, nothing sounds better,nothing.Imho.

... but it's all very subjective.
For me, it's all to do with how it's set up, and almost all bikes sound good with race exhausts. I like the sound of a (megaphoned) Manx Norton, a CCM or similar with a straight pipe, a Ducati with Termignonis, a VFR750 with an Arrow/Remus/Scorpion/etc muffler, any similarly equipped triple (Triumph, Benelli, etc.), any four or six with a decent aftermarket system, a two-stroke with expansion chamber(s) (especially a twin or triple). Even the very weird Suszuki roatary RE5 has some auditory appeal.
What I don't like is bikes where the mechanical noise outweighs the exhaust noise, or the exhaust is loud just for the sake of loudness, like debaffled mufflers, Harley drag pipes, and the like. They end up sounding like there's summat wrong with them, which there is. Also, small displacement bikes with noisy exhausts usually sound too "try hard": they sound like they're going a million km/h, when they're barely moving.

mmmmmmm
But then it is subjective, my ex used to taylor make exhausts, for ducatis, and guzzi's, and some jap bikes...
But actually the sound of a laverda, hehe...with it's baffles falling out did make a good sound too on the revs
Then there's the old Tridents...
OH! And the sound of Sidecar Bob's beamer (Sidecar) !!! Didn't think much of beamers till I heard that! (he knows this :bleh:)

Well that'd be my KTM690smc with the full Ti Akra system and the cut down airbox: it sucks and blows at the same time and is frankly stunning.
But I suppose you could say this is a very subjective thing and maybe to some a V8 Moto Guzzi or shitbox Triumph twin 'sounds better'.
Hard to say exactly but having sat in the dyno room with a Britten on full noise; I can still hear the music playing from Johns' creation

Some great sounds here.
http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Sounds.htm
The Yamaha RD05a V4 from the late 60's (bottom left)when if you weren't on a Yamaha you were 'nowhere man'. The 250cc V4's were indomitable. They were banned from racing because they were too fast.
They changed the rules to give other manufacturers a chance.
One of those sounds that makes your hair stand up on the back of your neck.

140rwhp on this dyno run (it got better later) and 158 kilo's semi wet....that one is only a 700 not a 750 given the cylinders it had fitted (doubled up TZ350F). Usual 750 stock is about 120. A good 700 is about a 120 also (originally quoted at 90). This one was a highside looking to happen.
