Hey there folks,

My full license is coming up soon and i'm considering getting the Aquilla 650 because I love my cruisers but have been tempted to get a sports bike because I do love my corners..

On a quick research around this bike appears to be the best next option for me. Classified as a sports-cruiser, I love the look of it and I reckon this bike is exactly what i'm looking for..

Anyway, essentially what i'm asking about is does anyone own one of these or used to. How does it handle the twisties, any major mechanical problems and just general opinions on the bike.

Ofcourse i'll be taking one for a test ride as soon as I get my full but you only get so much from a test ride.

Cheers for any advice.

And no.. i'm not gonna get the trend killer kit for it..

The Hyosungs are getting there, but the welding is still rubbish.

I think they have got to this "Standard" of build quality, and not bothered to progress, i don't think they will ever get to jap quality.

You get what you pay for.

Yeah that's alot like I was thinking..

It's only 11K brand new so I would buy it brand new, but i'll be expecting some build faults as I go along.. though I have no problems with fixing broken bits myself.

More wondering how it runs.

they are an alright looking bike nothing to write home about though....

had a play on the 250 version and well i think they are a pig of a bike (my own opinion) they are lacking something plus its a hyo not enough history there for me

Ah yes, but the difference between the 650 and the 250 is somewhat extreme..

I've had a wee spin on the 250 aswell, massive bike but it's all plastic.

The 650's a sports cruiser though.. the massive rear wheel accounts for the that.

Just be aware that the although the GV is better than the GT, the flungdung 650 engine has a tendency turn into a grenade...

theres one on trademe for 9k. I got the GT650R which is the same engine and trans, and it goes really well - unlikely you will need any more power than this from a cruiser. I think you will like it a lot. Make sure you bring it down to tauranga one thursday night - I'd love to see it.

DBAs they have only been making GV's since 05? they are fitted with the later head and are in a slightly lower state of tune (or it could just be the massive exhaust), also removal of the AIS system helps too.

As to the main fact the flungdung 650 is a renowned grenade, so much so the were recalled across Europe to be fitted new heads in 06, whether it's fixed it or not remains to be seen.

PS the don't have exactly the same box the GV is 5 speed the GT 6.

One of the guys in CKMC has one.

The problems he has had with them as far as i know is:

The mirrors or covers aroudn the bolts where they attach to the bars are like a chromed plastic or something - he's fixed this by getting custom flame mirrors

Also, his speedo has gone - a crack developed on the housing on the wheel and rain got into it while we were on rally. Now it comes and goes.

My dealings having it on rides with us is that it is more than capable of cruising at 120k if you want, and can hit 150k if needed. Appears to be a comfortable position to sit on also.

My personal complaint is that it's to quiet - but he isn't as adventurous as me at gutting pipes lol.

Ah wicked, yeah i'd definately be customising it to my own personal tastes. I swear cruisers used to be called custom bikes.. least they did in England.)

New exhaust pipes, check. And new mirrors.. sweet as. Apparently, the max speed on these bikes is 180-190. But above sorta 160 the cruiser position starts ripping you off the seat. But yes.. I have no passion for speeding on straights and I don't reckon i'll be doing above 150 round corners :pinch: Though that shall have to be tested.. :devil2:

Bugger about the speedo.. was wondering why it has a digital speedo. Seems stupid to me.. And it has no tacho either so i'd probably get an after market tacho fitted as well. So far, so good.

Ask the guys that own them - GV650 forum:
http://www.korider.com/forum/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=45

First sticky at the top of the forum page is this: "Should i buy it??? seems like a deal worried about issues???"

>> Problems such as:

A need to bypass the black carbon canister on the right side of the bike near the chrome carb cover - it can cause the gas tank to burst.

The first generation had a mirror defect (Late 2005 and 2006)

Block off the AIS system (very simple) to prevent motor damage.

LCD gauges - about 2,000 miles into it - the gauge goes wacky. Its a factory warranty replacement thing.

There are step by step directions for these fixes at www.alternativecruisers.com - free download directions.

Do you really have your heart set on the Aquila?
Have you not considered one of these 650's?
For the money? I know what I would purchase.

Mid-sized semi-cruiser with mumbo?
Honda Magna!
There is a gorgeous one at Red Baron.
Try it - you'll buy it!

The Suzuki S40 is a single cylinder, air cooled only, and not as powerful as the Aquila or the Honda Magna V4.

Personally, I'd go for the Magna but would not be upset with the Aquila.

I'm with you on that one. Would possibly add the S50 or the Intruder to the list, although I don't know how good they are in the twisties. Of course there is also the never ageing Mr Max...

I faced the same choice a few months back, but couldn't find a GV650 or a Magna to try around here, so I ended up buying an M50 (which I'm very happy with). The only issue is that I'm dragging the pipes...

Take a look at the following link:

http://www.hyosung.co.uk/media.php

In there are two downloadable reviews of the GV5650

And this is a link to Kevin Ash's review:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/main.jhtml?xml=/motoring/2007/07/14/nosplit/mfbike14.xml

Hope these assist. I think in many ways Kevin Ash's is the one that gives best feedback, as he isn't riding it thinking "sportsbike", which is a crime oft commited, especially by MCN!

The M50 is way better than the S40. Very nice looking. If I could be sure that my body could cope with a cruiser riding position, I would be happy with an M50. How much more $$ is the M50 than an S40, second hand?

The Kevin Ash review is interesting. It starts by saying Hyosung has been around since 1978, but new to us (outside of Korea, SE Asia). His one sentence summary/caption is fitting: "Head turner: Hyosung's GV650 Aquila looks good and has decent performance, but the brand name might be a problem in an image-conscious market"

I park next to a GV 250 or 650, and although its only about a year old, its a festering pile of corossion and rust. Unless your going to be hosing the sucker down every week with WD40, id say go with the above Suzuki recomendations.

Gah.. my cunt of a boss (also a rider) told me to take a look at a Ducati Monster 800 S2R... and that's now also taken my fancy...

This whole looking for a new bike thing is hard..

I feel your pain...! Personally, I'd ride the M50 and the Duc. but they are quite different bikes, you'll probably want both...

If you do buy a GV650, buy it from a trusted dealer. So if something does go wrong, you can take it back and they will happily fix it. Ive heard that the warranty on the hyonsung's aint too bad. I guess there attempt of making up.
