Good to see folks getting some of the maintenance jobs done, and again big ups to Wayne for providing the workshop.
Hope you guys got out for a beer afterwards.
If you have smallish jobs you want to get done or even questions you want answers to you will not find a better place or time to do this so take advantage of it while you can, summer is approaching.

Hey, can someone put up a list of what's been covered so far in the evenings?
Might be a good idea if the students now taught - ie.. those there for an oil change lesson now come and do an oil change themselves and teach it. Learn and retention by teaching what they learnt? With supervision when needed of course.

due to today being wet , i may not be along:(
but i see from last week if you guys want to keep this going in the winter , you need to find things to be done .
fork oil change, im sure a lot need that done ,
break fluid,
change the oil and filter .
its a great opportunity to change oil, and you will have a torque wrench somewhere handy to use.
I could have a look at the state of my air filter. Haven't taken it to parts before to get to it, so some pointers in that direction could be helpful. Just curious to see it's condition.
Maybe a plugs check if it's not too much of a drama.

Well first of all, hello again everyone... haven't been logging on to KB for quite a while recently, just haven't been bothered and had other things to do. But I thought I'd pop in and see how things were going... and then I spotted that people were looking for excuses to drink some beer?! :woohoo: Ahem. I could use a bit of whistle whetting practice....
Haven't been along to any of the events lately because I've either had a lot to do on the evening in question or (as today) the weather's been absolutely rubbish and my gear doesn't keep me dry, which isn't much fun when riding in from where I live.
Hanging out for the nicer weather and daylight savings starting again, haven't had a chance to do much riding recently with all the rain and generally shitty conditions we've had! Still nearly 3 months away though in the case of daylight savings :(

Connie's a little sick and in a few parts today but hopefully by this Wednesday I'll be able to ride there.
Poor thing was running like she was about out of fuel. :argh:
Checked plugs - black, dirty and gritty, so thought I'd just get new ones.
Air filter - dirty also so I'll get a new one of them too.:calm:
My main concern now is that if both of those are dirty then the carb' and other important "things" are dirty, clogged or worse, completely buggered.
Once I get the plugs and filter I'll be able to sort them, but as for the carb' I reckon I should stay away from it. Now is it worth doing what I can or just take it somewhere to get the "wire brush and dettol" treatment?

It may or may not be to bad in side the carbs.
You will never know unless you pull them apart to look and clean.
If you do not want to pull them apart your self, I would put half a bottle of Wynn's (spelling maybe wrong) carb or injection cleaner in the gas tank for the next two tanks fulls.
It may do the trick and if it doesn't it can make cleaning out the carbs later easier as it will clean out the small fuel gallery's that you can not clean out and will do no harm.
And will help clean your fuel tank of any water that is there as well.
I would try this first as it is to easy not to.:jerry:

I've got my new plugs so I'll throw them in tomorrow but looks like I've got a wee wait on the air filter so will have to take the cage down.
Side note for anyone looking for NGK plugs. I nabbed mine from Darbi Accessories and they gave me a sweet deal, $40.91 for 4 new plugs, much better than $17 and $16 quoted at two other places. :first:

35 demerits later.
First speeding ticket on the new bike
They tell me that I have extra demerits on my license though that I dont know about. How do I find out how many I have left?
Otherwise tonight was a good night. Thankfully I didnt have a second beer though. That could have made things interesting.

Look on the transport site and you may find them.

Na it was just a stupid thing to do is all. As I said to the cop, I got a bit carried away having some fun. It was on Durham/springfield st. Went through the fun couple of bends and just felt like I was cruising. Turned onto Ranfurly St and just pulled into the driveway when the cop came up behind me.
Turns out I was doing 74. The wallet doesnt hurt as much as the 35 demerits though. That just seemed like a heap. Id rather pay more money and have less demerits.

As for changing rosters, I'm self employed so if I don't work, I don't ride, eat or pay rent. In that order :)

Hi Spuds. The Kat has a dodgy bearing I think. There's a grumbling I can hear since changing the oil.
My mechanic recons (just over the phone) that it'd propbably be the bearing that looks after the front sprocket. The Whatchyamacallit bearing :)
It's a case cracker and was quoted about $650 as it could be up to about 10 hours of work apparently.
That was the cheapest rough quote for the problem I got from about 4 different places.
Given that $650 is about $670 more than I currently have I think I'll leave it for a while and focus on the R80 which just has carb problems (too rich I think, splutters under slight load, not under full - uses different jets?).
Anyhoo, thanks for the offer, do you have any ideas?
Cheers :)

However.. if anyone is interested let me know. I'm no electro guru but I know a bit. You can drop by my place and look at the electrical loom I have out, and some of the wiring diagrams.

Hey Lone Rider, I'm slowly starting to add new bits to my bike too. Inverter for running video camera, replacing bulbs with LEDs and adding extra LED brake lights for extra vis. Soon, extra driving lights too. :)
If yours is still in bits over the weekend, could be fun to have a chat to you about it all ...
I wish you'd told me you were selling that lovely strat a few weeks back, I just bought one. I needed a cheap strat that wasn't 'made' cheap and had a maple fingerboard. Found one at Cashies for a little over what you want for yours. Poos.
Good luck with that 7 string, they're very very nice machines. If you're selling that it really shows your enthusiasm for motorbikes.

Yeah I am not sure about that funny looking glass receptacle that Rick had in front of him at the bar to start with, I was getting concerned a little especially when he made some brief statement about having had a bourbon before, got me wondering a little it he had been abducted and substituted between the workshop and the bar, then he did the right thing and got a beer.

Sounds like my Katana!
The very first thing that happened to it when I got it home was my neighbor downstairs decided to bump her car into it, causing it to fall to the left and hit the wall of the house, bending the mirror 90 deg and cracking the LH plastics, bending sub frame so light doesn't popup etc.
I hadn't even started riding it yet!
Then a few months after that got repaired (long expensive process half paid for by stoopid neighbor) I rode it out to my dad's place for the first time, he took it for a test ride, front wheel slipped on some wet grass at low speed and guess which side it fell on? He was fine thankfully, good dive roll.
Exactly the same damage as before!
Then, earlier this year, a friend was borrowing it and took it for a WOF at the Litchfield testing station and the guy doing the wof half dropped it. Guess which side?
Back to Plastech for the third time (much merriment on thier part, first name basis now ...) tho thankfully not for such major repairs this time round. Got a new clutch out of it and some repairs to some superficial plastic cracking and sub frame bending.
I think she's trying to tell me something ...

I'd be stoked if someone could have a squiz at my brakes, they seem to be pulsing and squeaking at low speeds. Don't know if the pads need replaced or if the rotors are poked.
Also have some massive crash bung/knob things I'm wondering if they're worth while throwing on...
Will have to get for the beer a missed last week:apint:

Thanks everyone for organising this! I'm new to riding - but like all my hobbies I want to learn everything there is to know about it! I'd love to come along to one of these nights, maybe next week but more likely the one following.
So who'd be up for helping an absolute noob learn everything he can? :2thumbsup
Sounds like I might be the youngest coming along if/as/when I do, but I promise I'll "embrace the culture" and have a drink :devil2:.
Any suggestions of stuff to bring/do before I come along? My first session will probably be just all the simple stuff (changing brake fluid, tweaking cables that sort of stuff) but as I keep coming I'd love to learn more if y'all are willing to teach me!
Thanks for getting this organised, and thanks to wofman for the use of his garage!

mmmmm good Q, I checked out a site that GB gave me & found that the bike had been off the rd for several months (deregistered) makes me think that maybe it had been for a wee swim or being filled out of dirty cans
but I was assured that it had been fully serviced & checked over before I bought it from a certain bike shop in Nelson, me thinks :BullShit: in a very big way

Sweet, I'll get something sorted.
Down side for me is looks like I'll be bringing the cage tonight. Wanted to check actual volume of tank so ran her down to what I thought was near empty. Was 5L left, tipped the rest out, but the kicker I think, is that to get it all out I shook it:argh:. Reckons this may be reason that...she won't go.
Went to crank her up this morning (that was 2nd mistake, should have tested last night!!), she went but not happy - Fuel turned off, slap upside the head and turned back on - still running poorly - went inside to get helmet - no go. Tried several times but sounds like she's starved.
When I get home I'mm try starting from reserve incase main line is blocked somehow.
So, If you seem me tonight without her, then I won't be happy, but should still have pizzas.
stevewederell
24th September 2008, 16:32
Yay, much happier now.
Was a very simple problem after all, didn't seem that way first thing in the morning though. Both fuel line had become kinked when I put the tank back on. A few :Pokey: then push the go go button and all was well again.
We're  friends again now!

Well folks that was all she wrote, as I saw it tonight was a great social gathering with everyone champing at the bit for next week and getting back into the weekly rides.
I would sincerely like to thank Wayne for providing the workshop, tools and knowledge but also everyone who has turned up over the last few months and either put up a bike for maintenance or offered advise and assistance to those in need.
Hopefully these can be restarted next year and I am aware that there is the possibility of some maintenance events in the upcoming year.
