Ok folks it looks like out regular Wednesday night ride schedule has been rudely interrupted by the onset of winter :(

However we have an opportunity to have at least one if not more maintenance evenings in a fully equipped workshop, but before this happens we need expressions of interest and an idea of what topics folks want to cover

Please be practical with suggestions, ie chain tension and lubrication, basic suspensions set up etc. We might even be able to look at perhaps valve clearances if we have the right type of bike and time who knows.

Updated 05/05/08

First night will be held at Gloucester Motor Company, Wed 07/05/08 time 6pm (1800 for those of use who use 24 hour time), we will look at covering some of the basics like pre ride checks and post ride maintenance, actual topics will depend on who turns up.

I will try and have something in the way of a handout printed up so we can give folks info to take away (note if I manage to get this it might not be specific to your bike but will give you an idea).

So I can just turn up and be schooled by the professionals? Sounds like a good night out to me!

The idea is great....maybe not every wednesday for me though....
have got an old xr honda engine lying around for valve clearance practice if you want....

I'd like to know how to fix a flat tyre, and how to use the tyre cans. And how to put a kill switch on my bike, and install heated handlebars, and adjust the suspension/height of the bike, and adjust the handlebar/clutch/brake.

Mostly would just like to watch the boys. I'll bring popcorn. :jerry:

I'd be really interested. Things I'd like to see would be suspension adjustment (not that there's much on my bike:rolleyes:), oil changes, brakes etc

phoenixgtr
24th April 2008, 09:33
I'll definately be there. I'm more interested in the really technical stuff but I think we need to start fairly basic (oil changes, chain tightening, checking things like brake pads). Maybe if it continues we can get more technical (carbs - I'd love to know how to tune carbs)

I'd be down for any and all of that. If your going to do it at 6pm or so like usual and there be no ride, shouldn't clash with my eary bed time for getting to work on time the next day.

Please be practical with suggestions, ie chain tension and lubrication, basic suspensions set up etc. We might even be able to look at perhaps valve clearances if we have the right type of bike and time who knows.

1) Drive Chains: tension, lubrication, condition (including sprockets)
2) Suspension: condition (general & linkages), preload, rebound, sag
3) Cables(throttle, clutch, & brake): lubrication, freeplay, condition
4) Brakes: condition (pads & discs), changing pads, bleeding systems etc
5) Bearings(wheel, steering, swingarm): condition, tension (steering & swingarm)
6) Fittings: frame mountings, auxiliary items etc
7) Basic service: oil(checking, changing), oil filter(changing), air filter(checking, cleaning etc)
8) Tyres: condition, checking etc
9) Electrics: system checking, bulbs, fuses, basic repairs

Getting into doing valve clearances would be too involved for an evening unless it was done of a couple of evenings, particularly if a multi was involved. Also as the majority of bikes use bucket & shim adjustment having the relevant shim charts and a ready supply of shims for particular bikes it would be too involved for a simple basics styled evening. Also if done wrong who would be held responsible if it lead to engine damage.
The XR donor engine would be OK for showing how to check clearances but being screw & locknut adjustment means it'd only be relevant to a minimal amount of current bikes.

Thanks TWR that was the kind of thing I wanted to see, and you are right it would be a bit difficult to do bucket shim adjustment but the XR engine might give an idea of the processes involved, means that when folks do have to get it done at the shop the understand better what is going on.

Where will this be held?

All going well in a fully appointed motorcycle workshop,at dealers, but I do not wish to give to many details away as it might ruin the whole thing.

Im new to KB - and yet to go on a ride with you all (bloody winter interrupted that idea!!) but me and my husband would both be in to garage nights.. We'd be keen on all the basics eg. oil changes etc.

Look forward to meeting some new like minded peeps :2thumbsup

skidMark
25th April 2008, 17:48
I dont think it need to go into valves etc, just basic adjustments oil changes, knowing when to change sprockets etc as others have said.

Then if people want to go beyond that maybe a couple of advanced nights for cam chains, clutches etc etc.

I have a front and rear brake pads that need changing. Also my clutch and brakes could do with a bleed.

I have the fluid and can easily get the pads, so I'll happily volenteer my bike to be used as a demonstration bike.

It sucks bleeding brakes and clutches when you have to do it by yourself.

Easy to do it yourself, when you know how, hmm I think that would be a good thing to be taught. How urgent do you feel you need to do the brakes ? because if its before we get an evening sorted just do them, I have a couple of callipers here we can use just on the bench if need be.

Spuds1234
26th April 2008, 09:29
To be honest its not urgent at all. I just feel like putting in new brake fluid.

The pads will be getting a bit lean though. I just figured that it would be way easier to do these things in a full workshop than to piss around with my limited set of tools.

6 or so .... that's not a lot. Why restrict it so much? Also, how would you decide who would be restricted, eg having learners only could eliminate those who could help most.

Just a suggestion - perhaps people could make a donation for attending these nights, which could be put towards a charity (eg. these guys (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=1620)).

Reason I suggestes 6 ish was if ya get too many in one small area like a double garage sized w/shop, it becomes too chaotic with people asking questions all at once etc. Ive been there done that. Better to keep it smaller and more intimate, and have a few evenings so lots of folk can join in the learning experience, agreed?

Ok folks down to nuts an bolts time.

We will not be doing engine rebuilds and such, these are basic maintenance evenings, however should a few of you guys want to use the thread to meet up and do a larger project go for it, I enjoy the fact this seems to have kicked something off.

The plan for the first night is pre ride checks, and hopefully post ride maintenance, we are looking at no more than 2 hour sessions, and possibly starting either next week on the 7th or the week after on the 14th.

Wayne (aka wofman) has gained access to the Street and Sport workshop, for those of you who don't know this is the local Triumph dealership, and it looks like Glenn (World record holder) and perhaps one of their mechanics will be there to help us out so if anyone wants to shout Wayne a beer sometime I am sure he wont refuse.:apint:

Still keep the ideas coming, if you have anything specific you want to see or ask, who knows we might be able to cover it in another night, and yes suspension setup is in the plan

Alas no, I don't know how to do anything much other than checking the battery, air filter, spark plugs and oil level. Chain tension etc would be useful to know :).

Done.

Ok folks we are all set for a start date of 07/05/08 at Gloucester Motor Company, at 6pm, this is wofman's business address and he will be on site so we have a mechanic to answer questions.

Intended coverage is pre ride checks and post ride maintenance, if we have time we might get a little coverage of basic suspension setup, I am going to try and limit the time a bit to a maximum of 2 hours (gotta have time to get a beer).

I hope to see a decent turn out for this, even if you are experienced enough to know how to do these basics yourself it would be nice if you could lend a hand to those who are just beginning.

I'll be checking my tyres now, esp that back one! Loved the tools and I see a small shopping trip coming up - tyre pressure gauge at top of the list, but I really liked the torque wrench for keeping behind the front door. And now thinking about engineering a bike lift in the garage. KingJackel very handy with the measuring tape (ops, picks self up out of the gutter). And that chain had sure been around the block a few times, hope I can get as much milage from mine ;).

All in all a great night ... arrived home just in time to be thrown into some work so putting these up a little late but better than never :)

Hope your back recovers soon Jm ~ ouch.

Pics - Jm showing off his new tool, Fireliv checking tyre pressure, battery, fuse maintenance, Phoenix testing the suspension, group hug goodnight.

We will see how we go, its not on the programme but if needs be and its ok with Wayne I will just sit in a corner and change it over.

If this can be added to the programme we need to remove a couple of links from memory, if so it may be a good topic, especially as I don't have the tool to remove links the "nice" way

I will try and get around and see Wayne sometime on Monday.

Hey JM/Wofman, any chance we can replace Jessies chain there?? Brought a new one last week but havent been able to hook up with JM to sort it yet

Ok I went in and saw Wayne, we are set to do Jessies chain as part of the evenings events, also if someone wants to do an oil an filter change we will add that in (please supply your own oil and filter), we can look at other basic maintenance, and for those who were not at the first one I will bring along the notes from that.

If you anything you would like to see please don't forget to ask so we can add it the agenda for a night. So far we have the following.

I'd like to know how to fix a flat tyre, and how to use the tyre cans. And how to put a kill switch on my bike, and install heated handlebars, and adjust the suspension/height of the bike, and adjust the handlebar/clutch/brake.

I will try and cover tyre repairs one night I am sure I can rake up an old tyre and rim to show on and off bike repairs just need to get a on road kit.

The heated handle bars is an easy job on some bikes we just need access to the battery so if you want to get a set we can do that one night, please let me know in advance as we might need to add a relay in and a couple of other things.

1) Drive Chains: tension, lubrication, condition (including sprockets)
2) Suspension: condition (general & linkages), preload, rebound, sag
3) Cables(throttle, clutch, & brake): lubrication, freeplay, condition
4) Brakes: condition (pads & discs), changing pads, bleeding systems etc
5) Bearings(wheel, steering, swingarm): condition, tension (steering & swingarm)
6) Fittings: frame mountings, auxiliary items etc
7) Basic service: oil(checking, changing), oil filter(changing), air filter(checking, cleaning etc)
8) Tyres: condition, checking etc
9) Electrics: system checking, bulbs, fuses, basic repairs

Mostly covered on the first night, with the exclusion of 4 and 9, if we have time we might get to 9 this week. See the following

I have a front and rear brake pads that need changing. Also my clutch and brakes could do with a bleed.

I have the fluid and can easily get the pads, so I'll happily volenteer my bike to be used as a demonstration bike.

You available this week for this ? It might be a little short on notice for you if you don't have the pads I know.

Even with the addition of notes you couldn't teach that to a group of people properly in a couple of hours :nono: Not to the extent of having ALL the group competent enough to manage doing those jobs unaided and to a safe level.

With only 4 people on the first night covering the topics was easy, certainly not to a professional level but enough to give starting points and the knowledge to ask the important questions when and if needed. Especially when of the 4, 2 where familiar with the tasks :msn-wink:, so really we were only teaching 2.

But I do appreciate where you are coming from had we had a larger group well we might have been able to cover just chain tension and not a lot else.

I realise after a re look we did not cover off number 7) Basic service: oil(checking, changing), oil filter(changing), air filter(checking, cleaning etc)
but we will see if we cant get to that this week or per haps next.

Mine's in need of a change, so I'll volunteer it. Only thing is that it may or may not be ideal as an example bike as it's fully faired. Advantage: people with faired bikes get to see how they go on and off, and where things are located behind the fairings. Disadvantage: takes longer, more farting around. But I'm happy to supply my own oil and filter and leave it to the teachers to show how it's done step by step :)

You will spend $75 per bike (H1 fullbeam only - all you need) kit available on trademe ($150 - does two bikes). A very interesting and rewarding mod. Takes about an hour, maybe 2 if you fudge something up.

I chewed out the top of a screw on my rear brake resivior. It needs to come out so I can have rear brakes again.

Is this something that can easily be done?

headlesschicken
2nd June 2008, 15:52
nope

not on a reservoir anyway, id imagine you'd have to be extremely careful?
usual fix is a reverse thread drill bit.

Spuds1234
2nd June 2008, 15:55
The res can come off the bike if need be without to many problems. It think my whole rear brake system needs an over haul as to get it to work I have to pump the rear brake, the fluid level drops down in the res, and 1 minute later there is no pressure on the lever and the fluid level is way back up high again.

:(

Got my Across back yesterday after over a month out of action, so I did a couple hours last night and another couple hours tonight. Couldn't resist :).

Fuel economy's about doubled back to where it should be (17-18 km/L), and performance is a whole lot better in the low and mid range. Top speed's even up about 10-15 km/h, not that I'd know ;).

See you all next week!

I'm on evening shift again Wayne!!!

Hey on that note, what time do the activities actually start? I went a few weeks ago and nothing much got underway until about 7:30 I think. Not complaining - just easier for me to work out what I'm doing if I know when people are showing up as compared to when people are starting work on a bike. Every second week I'm available to come, but I teach in the evening after work until about 7pm on that 2nd week wednesday.

Picking up the bike in an hour.. Whooo hooo.. 3 weeks without the v4 is like a kick in the nuts.

So long as I have Saturday off to go to archery I'll be happy.

What are the hours, whats the job?

Some work on Saturdays, but it's usually training stuff and weekend work is either x1.5 pay or x2 pay

Depending on what job you apply for, you could be either on a rotating shift going from 7am til 3pm one week and rotating to 3pm til 11pm next week - rotates every week. That would be as a process technician - what I do.

I believe there will also be a job in the stock yard as a logistics/forklift operator

And a tooling technician job going shortly

Tooling tech you work to get the machinery ready and together, process tech you work with machinery to get it to produce to specification, logistics/fork you work on schedule for in and out products and production materials.

This bit sounds fun, is it a challenging job with bugger all down time during the day? Im used to working on my feet for 9 hours at a time with 30 minutes to sit down, the rest is about 40% stress and 70% hard sweaty farking work.

I'm bringing along some custom grips to have fitted, if anyone wants to assist/teach me to do it.

Not sure if they will fit - my other bike took standard harley grips but without the harley sleeve and the grips I had on it had a sleeve that was slip in. The grips I have for the v4 have the cable points (sleeve) as part of the actual grip.

I will bring along anyway. Should make it as I have taken the day off work

Well time did not allow me to make it, had to play with the carbs on the Yamaha, its been an interesting experience, seems 80's bikes and cages are having issues with the newer fuels and it is destroying older O'rings, which might be why my throttle has been jamming on. Time will tell if I have managed to solve the issues, but in the process it has meant I need to counter the tension of the new seal I had to tighten the tension on a few springs, thus the throttle is rather stiff to wind on, in such that now its going to be part of my exercise programme.

Hope you all had a good night, all going well I might make it next Wednesday.

Funny you should say that. Digby (the spares guy at Norjo's) told me that in his time working in spares (6-9 months IIRC) he has sold heaps of fuel-taps since the O-rings and membranes just shit themselves like crazy.

Great turn out tonight!

Glen is an absolute professional. His talk tonight about suspension was really interesting, and you can just tell that he knows his stuff inside out. It was easy to see the improvement in Mikel's bike after he'd had a twiddle with it. :2thumbsup.

He covered/explained about springs, dampening, preload and rebound, trial (plus diagram), steering bearings wearing out, fork oil and how temperature affects it, carrying passengers, suspension on the track, a bit about tyres and rubber, and a whole lot more but that's the limit of my very non-mechanical contribution/memory.

I just quickly whipped up this template which I'll use to set up my bike when I eventually get it back. It's important to record the current settings before you make any changes, because then if you manage to make it worse you can always revert back to what you had.
