Might be a bit of a noob question here guys. I know that so many enduro/cross country riders opt for the trusty old 2 stroke... why is this?
Ever since childhood, to me 2 stroke is MX/SX and 4 stroke is trail/enduro/CC due to the tractor like torque and low down power.
Why is it the 2smokers are so popular there? I'm guessing maintanence costs and ease of working on them?

nice and light, easy to maneuver so I suppose you would get less tired when going full blast for 2 hours or so :)

4 stroke is trail/enduro/CC due to the tractor like torque and low down power.
No way - a 2 stroke trials bike has heaps more torque and low down power than a 4 stroke. What you are really talking about is traction - due to a complete revolution of the crankshaft without a power impulse, the thumper is able to find more traction.A good 2 stroke will have lots more low down power than a 4 stroke, and this produces wheelspin.A good rider can control the wheelspin,a not so good rider will get into trouble, and so opt for a thumper.

Two strokes much quicker in the twisties, easier to start, less tiring. Note the hordes of CRF riders sitting on the sides of the trails recovering from the last 5-10 mins of trail time.
