It's about that time again do go and do it,again.
Due to where I'm currently working I've decided to go for either a 1098S or a '08 R1.
Sure this may sound like an "easy" choice between the two but as which ever bike I buy will be primarily(85%) for track days I'm having slight issues of abusing a near 40g bike to its limits with an inevitable bin in time....hence the new R1 option. Obviously I'd need to through some coin at it in order to get it humming just right...sounds familiar.

So...your opinions on which you'd choose and why but please remember the bikes application, track days.

I only say the 1098 'cos you know you want to.

Doh! R1, cheaper more accessible repairs etc, I prefer to have toys I'm not afraid to break.

However ........ I don't ride my 748 on the track as I'm afraid of repair costs:crybaby:, but I like it too much to part with.:slap:

1098s......only cos you would look to damn cute on it....
But the R1 would be a more 'in reach' bike at this point.
Im sure there will be more insightful reply's soon....over and out....;)

R1 wood be the sensible choice.

unless upon purchase you start to regret not getting the 1098. That wouldn't happen now would it....?

I really want to say the 1098, but logic dictatesthe R1 may be better. Not that I know fuck all but given the percentage of track work personaly I would have an issue with even the thought of throwing 40g worth of bike along the track.

But then some would say its only money, and you dont really need three meals a day:cool:

Jaysus DMNTD! You sure know how to put yourself into a catch-22 doncha?

From what I can recall, seeing that glazed look and drool coming from your mouth when you talk about the 1098, just get it then you know you have done it and just get on with riding it!

You done the jappas thing, time to go euro and get some Eyetie fast love! :yeah:

And as peeps have said before, you will get both bikes anyway!

It takes balls to post a poll like this without having had a poll on whether to have it or not first...

But I'm tempted to say the R1 - if it's for the track it's not unlikely to get a few scars along the way. What's the difference in retail price? I'm thinking that - if it's not the case from stock - you could make the R1 faster and handle better for the same amount of money as you'd fork out for the 1098...

A hard choice - man I feel sorry for you... :envy:

My .02c worth... R1, chuck a set of Ohlins cartridges and a TTX shock at it, a power commander with a Gary Pendleton custom map, and you'll still have change left over a 1098

Buy the R1 and with the money saved have your toes surgically removed so you can get that corner speed up..... :D

the 1098s ..hands down mate.

The bike rides/handles like NOTHING one of the 4 jappers can come close to, even if you put ohlins all through it,, then add the brembo stopping power. The ride set up (frame. telemetry etc etc is just far superio)
The parts, surprisingly enough considering magnesium, carbon, blah blah blah are cheaper in most parts than the jappers... ask Ivica.
You might be able to keep up on the Duck

Do it.. serious!

Cheeky bastards! Yeah I'm leaning towards the R1 at this stage mainly due to the fact that I know I'd still be 10G under the price of a 1098S with exhaust etc. I mean lets face it...I will bin.

Yes I have riden the 1098 and do love its ride but tbh I don't want to wreck one...and Im waiting for the 1098R

The 1098R is way faster, to all accounts. I mean, it's a whole new engine. Jeez.

If you buy an S now, you'll just lose money when you upgrade. Because you will upgrade. Because the R is undoubtedly ejaculatorily awesome.

If there was no R coming, then, sure, get the S.

There's more to track riding than superbikes, though. Instead of buying a Jap thou by default, why not set up a ProTwins or F3 650?

Dude.. uninformed decisions are are a waste of breath and bytes....

Fuck me then - let's all just stop posting right now then!

(Besides, I'm not the one to make a decision here - now if you had said "uninformed opinions" your post might have had it's merits... However, DMNTD chose to post a poll on it - that's the nature of polls btw, asking the uninformed for their opinion on a decision that is ultimately not theirs to make anyway.)

Unless you're positively made of money then the price difference might matter somewhat.

Do not get the 1098R, do not get the 1098R,...

er, how much does it cost...

In this very particular instance, I am reminded of hearing Ron Jeremy, on-stage at the Erotica expo, tell an anecdote about porn industry veterans who mentally convert prices into the numbers of various scenes they'd have to do to cover them.

I suspect a 1098R would be about 30 DPs, 5 ass-to-mouths and a dozen nude interviews for the web with zoom-ins on genital piercings.

All in a day's work, eh, DMNTD?

R1.

Chuck it down the track and just buy another.
It's a jappa. It's what it was built for.

Let's see now, you wanna trackbike but you are baulking at 40 large for a 1098S 'cos you are scared/sure you are gonna crash the thing. That being the case why would you be waiting for an even more expensive 1098R? You'd never take it to the track and ride it how you'd want to.

Me? I'd rather do something and experience a fuck up than not do something and realise later that I missed out on something special. It's only money, you aren't short of a quid, so have a go man. Buy the 1098S and thrash the bejesus outta the thing, breathing easier 'cos you can tell yourself you've saved 10-15k (or whatever it is) on the 1098R.

Either that or buy this jigger, and have top quality suspension a la Ducati, and mega ponies: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motors/Motorbikes/Motorbikes/Sports/auction-150525395.htm

As I can ride our(work's) demo 1098 whenever I may as well just get a plastic fantastic to suit my track days and won't cry if it goes down the track.

Now then...a 1098R or the RC8(2nd gen.) could tempt me off it in a while

Given the pleasure your job gives you I reckon they should should change the name to GayRide Motorcycles.

Now what should Chrisy Poos,
For a bike he should choose

An R1 with all the extras
Plus a tank protector

Or a plain old 1098R Ducati
To keep his old jewels happy
