Yep, yep, yep... Weather unknown on the day. We went to Auckland last Sunday (160km round trip, pathetic distance I agree), the weather was dodgy at best. We got absolutely drowned at one part, the rain was solid. Figured it was good training...LOL. Gear held up, trip a bit more sedate than it can be, but fun all the same.

Apparently there are some pills available if the weather is crap :innocent:

Lets hope we all get a wonderful day for a ride, not too much frost, certainly not a lot of rain. I will settle for cold, with watery sunshine through clouds as perfect!

Judging by the forecast, neither day is going to be wonderfully condusive to a ride, but I pick sooner rather than later, though you guys are a bit closer to the weather that is heading our way than I am, and may get the brunt of the crappy stuff tomorrow not Sunday.

will post a few pics from today shortlyPersonnal I think the Pahiatua turn off towards Alfredton should be at the BP south end of Pahiatua.

Also cut out the Traimain Av portion. Get out of the city limits quicker. Less traffic lights to contend with. And cut across to Bunnythorpe then onto Tainui, Colyton, etc.

Proved GPS are not infalible. A paper would be more accurate.:bleh:

Yes, a nice route, but essential to thorougly brief all riders on the hazards likely to be encountered. It has easy and difficult sections that all should be aware of.

Riders need to keep an eye out for what's happening behind them as well. No lights slow up. It is a charity ride and not a tostestorone test after all.

yep. the gps was a little out. not by much it is set to get off main highways as quickly as poccible which is why it wanted to go round the back of piatuatua rather than up to the BP. Have modified the route to go up to the BP now.

Another point is we were surposed to turn left at the balance crossroads not right. We will get that right next weekend.

Doesnt matter where you go in the wintertime unless you stay on the main highways you are going to get wet/slippery patches. Just part and parcel of winter riding. Riders should just be aware and wary of it.

Overall I think the route is good. Good mix of roads and should be manageable. Agreed with all those marshalling points.

good o

absolutely I think for the ride & meeting next week we may need maps of the route & mark on it the "hazard" section we can have a closer look next sat

Riders need to keep an eye out for what's happening behind them as well. No lights slow up. It is a charity ride and not a tostestorone test after all.

if the front speed is slow bonez do you think this will keep the ride slow or tostestorone will take over anyhow ??

Very good point. No-one noticed that most of the group had stopped until well down the track. Definitely no room for hi-jinks.

there will not be any room for hi jinks, just hope everyone can get into the spirit of the day & ride slowly rather than treat it as a race ..

Good turnout alright.

sure looked it from the pics .. quite jealous its been a brilliant day here in the waikato but no bike to enjoy it ..

ok plan for next sat .. to ride the loop again with maps marking hazards clearly so we can have a good brief after we have completed the whole loop those who have a preference for corners can mark them on the map so I know where we are talking about

Hope everyone is free for a 10.30am ride out .. prob phil turnbulls again .. I will confirm at end of the week Meeting 2.30pm at .. TBA ..

Whiskers indicated he would be keen to help out, just wondering if you can make contact this week with any of them & see if they are free next sat to attend the route ride & meeting we will require at least 20 marshals but I would prefer about 25 if it can be arranged .. better to have to many than not enough

I am still tending to have the newbie/novice riders also having their own lead rider & TEC just have not decided on where they will sit .. but still tending to the front at this stage .. am hoping its one of the things we can discuss & decide the safest place to put them next sat ..

Thoughts on route.

Taking Railway Rd. Ends in a problematic Stop/Railcrossing/Roundabout x road.

Suggest going straight out Tremaine Ave and turning left onto Stoney Creek Rd. Less turns and easier to control.

Don't like the the gorge and wonder why the saddle road wasn'nt used (if the weathers ok all the bikes could regroup in the windmill carpark.

The right turn onto Ballance Bridge is hard to control.

Second half of the route (after Pahiatua) seems all good. People need to be aware theres damp slippery patches of road even if it hasn't rained for a while.

The last three times i've been over the Saddle the road on Woodville has been pretty treacherous and I would hazard a guess that in a ride such as this it would be quite lucky to not have someone bin it on that loose chip where at least in the gorge the road surface is stable.

I think Garry has a point as far as large numbers of bikes turning right off SH2 onto the Ballance road is concerned. That could be a bit hazardous for other traffic in both directions and for the riders as well.

Sarge could be right about the condition of the saddle road tho - it can be a bit dodgy - perhaps an inspection could be done by one of the locals ?

Horse
9th June 2008, 11:28
I went over the Saddle yesterday - the chip's still a bit loose in places but I certainly wouldn't call it treacherous. I was going E-W so uphill on the loose stuff, which isn't exactly the GV250's "fast mode", and I ride like a nana anyway.

I like the gorge when the traffic's light, but it almost never is, and the Saddle's lots more fun. On a good day E->W is the better ride because the view out over the Manawatu as you're coming down the Ashhurst side is great. There were a couple of the tight corners on that side that didn't see any sun due to the adjacent pine trees and required a bit of caution.

Yes an alternative could be possible but what I know not, to the best of my knowledge there is only 3 options to get where your looking at going.
1. Pahiatua track.
2. Manawatu gorge.
3. The Saddle road.
I personally would rather do a left turn than go over the saddle if it's still as bad as the last time I went over it but I realize with the possible numbers of motorcyclist's we are talking here it a bit different.
At the end of the day what are more people likely to be able to handle?
1. An understeering front end sledge on loose chip or
2. a left hand turn across traffic.
You could travel the Saddle safely by backing everyone up to a very slow speed I guess but don't forget you still have to turn left at the bottom of the Saddle too in order to get back to the Ballance bridge.

Ok, well the last time I went over the Saddle I would have called it treacherous but it's been a few weeks but considering what council's consider to be swept roads after re-sealing these days I though it would be hardly much better.
Needs to be checked out further I guess.

People need to be aware theres damp slippery patches of road even if it hasn't rained for a while.

the police may be helping out with the turn to get into Ballance .. that still needs to be confirmed, also talking to the roading manager from PNCC got a good contact for that, also verified by the police, Carmen is making initial contact so I can email them. (also the left turn from Ashhurst) we will be doing a very slow rolling regather before riding through Ashhurst, something to be discussed next week so we can all turn & ride through the gorge together & manage the right turn into ballance as a group

I helped run a ride a couple of years ago to collect blood for the blood bank
and money for the helicopter................
Keep the ride simple!!!!!!
not to long....more petrol in the tank means less in the kitty and you also have more time to get money off the punters
Money on this ride is your object not the ride...............
and its the middle of winter.dont want the helicopter picking up people:)

good plan. might actually do this.

the saddle wasnt used because too many people dont like the road. The surface is very unpredictable and I will almost guarentee a crash of some description if we go that way. The gorge is the best route over to balance.

The right turn onto Ballance Bridge is hard to control.
it is a bit of an intersection.
I considered going out to woodville and then out to pihatua but that is really boring.

Second half of the route (after Pahiatua) seems all good. People need to be aware theres damp slippery patches of road even if it hasn't rained for a while.

lets hope for the best.

It would definatly be better to avoid Saddle Road, it's a pain even in a car as to many people tend to stop theirs cars in the middle of the road to watch the wind mills.
And as some of you guys know by the way I rode on Sun, you need to make the track simple for us newbies:scooter:

we are not doing the saddle end of story .. I hate that damn piece of road can never get a good flow on it & can change conditions quickly

regardless of experience everyone will be catered for .. some already know my thoughts on where in the group the newbie/novice riders will be and the special precautions that will be available to them .. that will be one of the major discussion points at the meeting on saturday so have a good think about it over the next few days

back to carmens for meeting regarding marshals etc on the day 1.00ish

will be riding regardless of weather as I am not free sunday

If you want to attend the meeting at carmen's & are not able to make the ride plz pm me or Oscarnz for the address

one of the pilots will be attending & need to discuss final destination as council will not allow chopper to land at the square .. this will be discussed sat but alternative railway land heaps of parking for the bikes & we can do a circuit of the square .. chopper will fly overhead as we do the final push into the city ..

Just heard from my bro that everyone got round in one piece today. Sorry to be the one to let the team down last Sunday. In short: fibula broke, tibia spiral fracture. Now have an internal (don't ask how it got in there ) rod and screws to keep the tibia aligned. Surgeon was ace :first: Did a great job so now looking at 5-6wks no weight on it. In a boot - no cast - so can still bend my knee. Crutches for 10-12wks. Fully healed a few weeks after that. In all the leg's pretty well sorted. Cracked ribs ... eeeooowww!!!!

Bike's with the loss adjuster - no news yet.

Thanks to all for your support before, during and after. I'm still coming to terms with what happened. I'll discuss what I think went wrong (privately for now) but I can tell you the mistake happened well before that corner - about lunch time I reckon and nothing to do with what I ate.

Keen to help out on the 28th provided I'm comfortable on my feet/crutches. Also keen to host anyone that care's to make it out this way. Next few weekends are a bit busy but perhaps after that.

Take care all. Ride your own ride.

good to hear you are on recovery. Dont worry about letting the team down. From where I sit you only let one person down and you have to live with him. At least you can avoid the same situation without spending heaps of money. Yes we did make it round the route toady but I have been in a bad mood all day and not the best mood for riding. Managed to have the rear try to overtake the front on a corner which gave me a attitude readjustment without the pain.

Yup if needed we can .. but that will really cut down the ride ... I would think the first group will already be well ahead by that stage ..

by getting them to leave 20 mins ahead it separates the two rides completely & they should not get carved up by anyone

ahh sorry now I am with you ... thats only for the newbies .. depends on how big the main pack is .. potentially you could be waiting 40 mins as novices will be not far behind the marshals .. then wait for the main pack .. however as I am one of the TEC you can decide if you want to tag in front of us or shoot to pahiatua & assist with the turn by BP then tag on when we come through again

I proved that you can't get cell coverage from the entire route. A better plan might be for her to park up and for all marshals to know her location for an intercept when required. If she's on the move then she may go out of coverage.

yeah thats wot I figured .. thought if she drove over to pahiatua & parked up .. then once the final TEC come through she can tag on the back of us to ballance & back through the gorge .. makes sense to have her close to mangamarie & back of pahiatua area

dunna worry Tony we have special permission from security on where we can park and not park .. essentially we have to keep roads free for obvious reasons .. but the pilots are dealing with that side ..

I'll be there with Bells on. Points that I can think of:

Priority 1: Tall poppy syndrome and NZ media: Its been raised before, but just one ticket/crash/display of bad biker behaviour will result in negative media reporting 180 degrees out from what we are trying to achieve. This isn't just n organiser responsibility. We are all doing this for the same cause. If you see someone doing something that will look bad on TV that night, give them an earfull. People thinking they are proving something quickly realise they aren't when bollocked by 50 different people.

2. Along the same lines, doing everything we can not to p*ss people off. Particularly around the hospital (an emotional place at the best of times). Bikes filling the carpark wil seriously p*ss off people there to see their relative dying of cancer so I hope the boys at Square Trust have it sorted.

Other than that it looks like its going to be a great day. Congrats to the organisers for your hard work in bringing this together. I look forward to seeing you there. I have a special interest almost hitting one recently: http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?p=1587769#post1587769

ok guys final destination will now be to the hospital & the helicopter hangar

we will have the carpark on the south side of the hangar hopefully it will be roped off for us to use .. its nice & roomy

next saturday can all marshals be at PT's by 9.30am Please, so we can have a quick meeting & get all the bikes together before the public start arriving

We will be doing a major regroup of the all the riders to head through the gorge & napier road as one big convoy, & if needed another small regroup by memorial park, however if we stay together as a group this should not be required.

for safety we will have the support vehicle parked to stop traffic heading through the gorge & a few marshals down the road further to slow traffic since visibility will be an issue

and lets all hope the weather is an absolute ripper like today & we will have an awesome turn out :niceone:

The Marketing Manager for Westpac is offering a heap of helicopter money boxes to our rides, use them for decoration on your bikes, prizes or whatever. Her thinking is that it is a visual aid to the fundraising. We are saying yes to them. Do you guys want some too?

Ummm. Just making sure you're aware but I'm sure you are. For the Palmy ride, The Palmy rescue helicopter is Square Trust Rescue helicopter. From their website:

The Philips Search and Rescue Trust has operated the rescue helicopter in the Palmerston North region since October 1991. The current principal sponsor is The Square Trust, a Palmerston North-based gaming machine charitable trust, hence the name The Square Trust Rescue Helicopter.

Westpac are one of many sponsors, but this is not a 'westpac rescue helicopter'.

My point is, I think it would be ok to use 'Westpac' buckets, but not 'Westpac Rescue Helicopter' buckets.

Thoughts?

Ok that is fine, no free money boxes for you guys to give away down there.

Thank you for pointing that out. Yes I am aware that it is the Phillips etc rescue helicopter down in your area. Where did you get buckets from? This lady is offering helicopter money boxes, sure they say Westpac, but Westpac support all rescue helicopters in the country, they only have sponsor naming rights to 4. The thought (hers I might add) are that they might raise the HELICOPTER part of what we are doing.

Haha, like I've said earlier in this thread, great work by everyone involved. Merely raising potential gotchas as I see them. My point here being that Jarrod and the boys at Square Trust might be a little put out if people start thinking they are a Westpac named rescue chopper, or people not donating thinking the buckets are for Westpac named rescue choppers i.e. not their local Square Trust one.

Just a thought.

YOU HAVE DONE A FANTASTIC JOB!

I just want to thank you for everything you have done in organising this ride on Saturday, your support has been fantastic. I know the result will be a huge amount of money raised for your helicopter.
Lets hope this weather blows itself out before Saturday eh!

Thank you again.

ahh now I can answer this one ..

your correct tumbles and here is the link (http://www.rescue.org.nz/about.php) regarding the Rescue choppers that are run by the charitable trust.

However this weekend the banners & donation buckets will have westpac rescue helicopters. Both Jarrod & Andrew are aware of this, as the fundraising liasion for both Westpac & the charitable trusts are the same person & westpac do assist in funding the charitable trusts and also your correct in the naming rights to 4 mom .. So its no problem. I have been aware that this will be the case from the onset & as no one else has any issues with it, it should not be a problem. The money raised in palmerston will go directly to the Square Trust Rescue Helicopter.

Forget the chains, a snow shovell to dig the paying riders out from behind their heaters will be the thing !
Not looking promising by the met forcast (http://www.metservice.co.nz/default/index.php?alias=rainfcst_7daytas)
But the speed the fronts (http://www.metvuw.com/satellite/)are moving up the country we might just get lucky and see it blow over !

hmmmmmmmmmmm. As someone who works outside all day. I think there is such a thing as BAD weather and we are smack bang in the middle of it. The good news is we have the biggest tournament of the year on tomorrow and with 240 people tramping through the mud there should be very little grass to mow for the next six months.

Aint golf a great sport, especially as it is a winter one too.

Just get a heap of "keep off the grass"signs around the course, that'll give you an idea of the humour of the players.

Bet you can't wait till Friday morning to see the damage done and prepare for Saturday playing.
