Cheers Bill I will definately require help .. we will catch up at the cold duck & will outline some of my idea's .. Hopefully we will have riders from our way, wanganui across, Pahiatua & maybe the napier crew .. so if we can cover a large area & get a heap of riders out fantastic ..
I am thinking three or 4 loops that can be considered but it will be weather dependant as well, however some of the more experienced ppl in the area may come up with a good route

all money collected will go to the square trust helicopter

yes I would assume so .. this is to coincide with the others around the country & to also raise awareness for the cheesecutter campaign at the same time

i have put it in my diary. who is making the route?
chanceyy
4th May 2008, 20:40
who is making the route?
that is something I am hoping to discuss with some of the crew .. esp those who are experienced at plotting maps .. (hint hint)
I have 4 routes in mind but I guess they will be weather dependant & given the short days would need to be 3 hours max to allow those from other areas get home at a reasonable hour

Here's one to get ya blood bubbling to start with !
Cold duck is very comercial and there will be more riders than a bull can shit !
Set a date prior to next week and get some flyers printed, (for a poker run perhaps ! On the date You rush to decide before next weekend lol) and i'll sort sponsoring of the prize for the run ! (ok i know fuck all ppl, but will put one on the line here ! We dont have to advertise the prize on such a flyer do we ? Mmmm would be a puller though Set of tyres or sim. would be good but for a cause like this it wont have to be a biggy (i'll get him/her pissed and take his/her bike for a ride ! Hell a few ideas here would be good)
Wont be hard to swing the waipawa guys into letting us hand out at their rally ! Know of a few ppl who would help secretary on a poker run if there aint no-one on KB to put hands up (cant see it being a problem though)
Please add ideas here !!!

hmm Never done a poker run .. Might have to call in for coffee & discuss it ... you can outline how it works :)
Along with the Auckland ride organising this for Palmerston North & the Square Trust Helicopter Rescue 28 June 2008 - and awareness for the Cheesecutter Campaign
still a few details to be organised which I hope to get sorted in the next few days, However general plan
riders from all areas converge on Palmerston North (venue to be confirmed) 10.30 onwards
11.30 a ride out for several hours back to Palmerston North to second venue (to be confirmed)
This is the local offshoot of the Auckland (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=72686) one
It will be $10 to ride and I am hoping that we can draw enough attention to this ride .. I will have posters organised once i have details sorted .. I need riders from other areas getting the word out & put posters in shops etc ..
If anyone else has ideas or can lend a hand plz pm me ..
Hope we can get a great turn out .. & hopefully I can rope a few of the Ashhurst/Manawatu guys to assist with the ride out ...
Good stuff Chanceyy...:woohoo:
Im picking the lower North Island bikers will be there in force to support this awesome event. Hawkes Bay pootlers should be able to join ya as well.
Christchurch are underway with Dangerous and SuziQ leading the way....
Taupo bikers can get to Hamilton easy enough...or Rotorua for that matter.

royal flush wins !!
But coffee all good anyway Sandra
Show ya with a simple hand of strip poker !
Will outline all the rules as we go along !

Buggered if i know if a royal flush (Say so) wins but in all the poker runs i've been in i aint seen one ! Know a few ppl who have run one or three and it wont be hard to recruit their help, be surprised if they aint kbers anyway !
Hell you know me Sandra stack em as they fall lol all good !

The rules are all ladies must lose clothes.

Standard poker rules rule.Just need to spell that out at start of ride.
Can also do a booby prize for the crapiest hand as well.
4 venues to stop for cards, after drawing first card at start.

ok have updated the first thread with more details
both Phil Turnbulls & the Square Trust Helicopter are now both on board .. still a few logistics to be worked out but the rescue crew are definately old hands at this & thrilled to have another fundraiser ..
The Square trust have offered their base as a second venue after the ride & happy to show the riders around the hanger etc .. this could be slightly dependant on numbers however we may be able to organise parking close by if we get a fantastic turn out .. this part may need fine tuning
thanks to Cowboyz we have several different loops for rides sorted & approx 160 ks distance
I would prefer to have this run as usual (second rider behind the leader to stop at turns til TEC comes through) to make the ride flow

Was thinking going down main st. turning left into the square then going round and round. About 140 laps should be about right. If anyone runs out of tread on the right hand side of their tyre they can turn round and do 70 laps the opposite way.

Wonder if the Naki KBers/Bikers have plans to get to Palmy?
Its the same distance to Palmy as it is to Hamilton (230 K's) but Palmerston North would be the better bet as we will only be in Hamilton for half an hour .

Handed out a poster to local shop which does the odd weekend run to see if a group is keen, owner will copy and put in window, counter etc.Went to drop another at a couple of central naki bike shops on way to work this morn but both hadn't opened when called in,will do so next week.
Means leaving Stratford at 9.00ish,Hawera at 9.30ish so looks good, will be home about 5.30-6.00ish so not too bad,the NPguys will be later home though, that could be an issue though.

Hey Guys
I have to come back up to the waikato for a week from the 5th so I can not make the 7th reccy ride, however cowboyz will still head out & do a check out of the route ..
so if anyone wants to join him & check out the ride & possible requirements then check out the calendar ..
I am hoping to do the ride the following weekend (depending on family circumstances) with Cowboyz again .. & hopefully we can organise a meeting afterwards (this is still two weeks out from the event) I still have to get to chat to police about escort in & out of the city ..
& a few ppl have come up with ideas regarding running raffles .. sounds great .. does anyone want to pick up the ball for this one & organise (along the lines of $100 petrol vouchers selling 100 tickets for $4.00 each .. thats another 300 raised for chopper)
anyone else have ideas ????
does anyone need posters to put up around bike shops ..
can anyone organise the shops in palmy for posters?? (phil turnbulls already has theirs up .. thanks pauly & carmen)

Chanceyy great job with organising this!! Hope to be there, and drag a few others along as well.
In case any of this helps...
Suggest you list the event on www.silverbullet.co.nz
You could try getting a local radio station on board with a bit of publicity seeing as it's for a great cause.
Also contact the local Manawatu paper, they would be mad not to cover it - contact them very soon so they have it on their calendar.
If you are still looking for vests, Uncle Bill's in Porirua have had them (I haven't been in there for a few months) - yellow with reflective strips and velcro to do up. They cost less than $5 each and we used these for a while (and the velcro do-up is fine) till we got ones at the Coast to Coast ride.
Regarding wearing vests, are you wanting only the helpers to wear them? Not trying to be a nana here but I know a few people that always wear vests (believe it or not) and would not be very happy if told to take them off....from a safety/visibility point of view. I don't know how the organisers managed on the Coast to Coast with hundreds of people wearing vests of varying types!

I got a big box of paper with the petition, in it are a heap of petition forms, do you want me to send some down for you?
I have printed a heap of forms & have ppl at work signing them .. only about 160 staff here ..
also just got off the phone with Jarrod (pilot) and he is organising the safety plan for the council and as long as the chopper is not on a call out it will be down at the square, I have also breifed him on the route so we will prob have the chopper fly overhead as we make our way back. He also has direct contact with the radio network to get them on board as soon as I send the info to him, and a heap of media contacts via email ...
Letter to the police is almost complete just getting one of my colleagues to proof read it & that will be sent by tomorrow ..
next week will be gathering info for the media releases that will take place just after queens birthday weekend
and I hope to organise a shift swap as I am suppose to work that sat  Speaking of work a couple of friends have offered their assistance on the day (blardy awesome) doing jobs at Turnbull's and sqaure so it looks like we are picking up momentum here :wari:
ohh yeah I have also been thinking after the ride that day I will prob need a stiff drink or 50 :sweatdrop: so might have to stay in palmy overnite (hint hint Carmen) so shall we have a bbq to finish of the aft for the volunteers & marshalls ?? or head to a cafe or something .. ideas crew ??

Wheeling round the square while smoking a ciggy would be a health and safety issue?
Beg to differ there cowboy ! If it raises money and awareness, it works !
At this stage i see it as a ride, something for riders to come to and pay their tenna, go for a hoon then a BBQ for the yellow vests pfffft !
You aint met me yet have ya ?haha like to make noise !!!!!! AWARENESS !!!!
Bikers are a minority, BUT!! there is a funny thing happening on the roads! old ladies are pulling over to let us pass ! Why not make it something for all to see and get involved.perhaps a few more ppl who become aware !
Could see it becoming a health and safety nightmare for those not in the know !! Are there any in the know how to make something like this happen ?

not all attention is good attention. With the ammount of work Chanceyy, Myself and a multitude of others have put into making this work we dont want to tarish its repuation before it gets off the ground. Stunting will be frowned apon.

Then you are seeing it wrong. Adjust your perception. It is definitely not going to be a "go for a hoon" It will, however be promoting safe riding and awareness for the cheesecutter campaign.

The cheesecutter campaign is ALL about perception. Chanceyy has done a fantastic job at making this a spectacular that ALOT of the public will take notice of. A few wheelies through town and public perception will turn from "Ooooooh look at all those bikes, I wonder what they are up to" into "fucking showoff bikers, more hoons around the square - lets go elsewhere"

Too right - there's more than enough hoons on that other helicopter ride. The idea is to raise funds for the helicopter not get them to spend them.

Ok just had a convo with chanceyy and was reminded of the lads that ran amuck during the cheesecutter ride !
I'd just like to reassure anyone out there, who might have reservations about what i'm into, that i am no stunt rider and at 47 know when is the right time to play and the right time to be the (whatever you want on the day) !
My ealier comments (sorry cowboyz ya left me an opening) were a bourbon fuelled, spontaneous, two finger hunt and peck attempt to raaaark up some AWARENESS ! Still believe in what i said, but as Sandra kindly pointed out, (I'm liable to scare ya, hahaha ok that aint what she said but hell they're 9% bourbons so i'm writing it !) the logistics of arranging a stunt event is unthinkable at such short notice !
Again, i reiterate, carving up any ride where the speed is below the ton is not gonna happen ! Wouldn't think of pulling wheelies (they just seem to happen !and stoppies are beyond me) at such an event !
Have mentioned to Sandra that I'd even be keen to stay back with any noob's to make sure all arrive where they're suppose to ! (will pm Ya re the 7th coyboyz)
I have no problem with travelling slow, nor do i have a problem with riding at a hellish speed or trying the odd stunt !
I will have my partner with me on this ride and as a noob, she will be doing any speed limits that there are (and will also be in my mirror if not in front of me).
I will not be at the front of the pack (sheesh) and will do like the true mature triumph rider should and hold back to make you guys look good ! (thrusts his head through a pane of glass)
Where's my bourbon ?

Thanks Lance & I completely appreciate and am grateful to the support from everyone here also be mindful that we could have a strong media presence I certainly hope that we can portray a positive image, and draw the public out to check out the vast array of bikes that will be on display
I have had a chat to sinfull on the phone, he does have good ideas & a stunt day in the future could be a goer .. I might even know where there is a stunt bike in wellywood .. :blip:
Also to bear in mind we may have a strong police presence on this ride if everything pans out and I have stated in that letter that I fully support the police for pulling up inappropriate rider behaviour ..

correct - and after getting carved up on the coast to coast ride along Ballance I really hope this ride is more of a cruise, hence the slow lead speed .. but more about that later .. :shutup

Off the cuff here,a big thank you to Chanceyy,Sinful,Cowboyz and those putting this event together, have had a few guys down this way say yep will do it work permitting, weather etc.
As for a positive from the ride the best promotion for the cause will be after the event has been completed to be able to tell the media,no one recieved a ticket,no one was injured, all had fun.
And the awareness of barriers is alerted to those who don't realise there lethal properties at times. This will/could be undermined with any idiot who pops a wheelie and loses it,or gets pinged at 130km,and in the heat of moment with a crowd around there could be one who decides to show off.
It would take only one person to do that and the media will jump all over them/us as hoons, and if that is the way we all ride we deserve to be butchered by wire.

A very good point sir, there were a couple that did a bit of 'stunting' on the first protest ride in Auckland and things got out of hand (understandable) that is why its a good idea to have a Lead rider that noboby passes. I will be adopting that role on my ride.

The biggest danger in the public seeing stunts on this ride is that it will re-afirm their belief that everyone on sports bikes goes like a bat out of hell and if they would just slow down then the cheesecutters wouldnt do so much damage. It is not surprising people get cut to bits when they are doing 200km/hr on one wheel and hit the barrier. If only they obeyed the road rules there wouldnt be a problem. No point supporting that.

There is a nasty video in the Chessecutter forum of a biker losing a leg at slow speed on a cheese cutter, sadly the message we need to take to the people is they are not safe at all! Have a look at www.cheesecutter.co.nz there is a picture of a big car that has gone under the wires and had the A pillar cut through!

Yep pretty much got it in one.Public will forget the good of having say 100 bikes at each venue supporting the local air ambulance(which all benefit),and barriers, raising maybe $2000 or so if you get just one hoon pulling a wheelie or other shit. The typical bike arsehole comments fall on very open ears then.Responsible riding by 99.99%of group is ignored ,they focus on the twat stunt riding.
Mind you with a briefing extolling the virtues of safe and sound riding, any shit will be dealt with harshly I presume.Often stated it aint a race nor on a race track, and with a TEC no worries about the stigma of being last, which means at least you've finished safely, better than rip shit and bust and ending up RIP.

I just talked to our local DJ about the weather. He has Ken Ring of www.predictweather.co.nz on his show every Wednesday morning. He is going to do a prediction for us all for June 28th on the show on Wednesday. Seems though up here in the north we will have rain threatening, and that is likely to be the story all over the country on the day. Stay tuned will let you all know on Wednesday. Fingers crossed eh?

cheers Jonno .. yeah had that thought as well and in two minds ..Lance & I had a chat about it several weeks ago & hopefully when we have the meeting we can delegate corners prior .. if we allow those ppl the chance to "catch" up to the leader will that make others in the pack try to keep up ?
and also thought if the experienced guys are at the back that will prob have a bit of pace on anyway as the way it spreads out ..
had thoughts about having the 250 riders in behind the leader where the pace will be slower than the rear ..

How many potentially confusing corners are we talking about? Why not start with a dozen or so marshalls in the lead bunch with the RIC. At each trouble point one marshall stops and marks the corner for those that follow. When the TEC arrives the marshall rejoins the ride.

Not that I have ridden the course yet .. but roughly 18 marshalls are required at this stage .. depends on how much help we get from the police .. letter ready to be sent
& Rob that is the rough plan at this stage .. most of the rides I have organised in the past the experienced riders are free to ride as they please to make their way back to the front ..
as this ride will have riders whom we have no idea how they ride (& prob those young males with some thing to prove) I am not sure for this ride that will be a good idea

That's cool. The feasibility of moving up from TEC to RIC will depend on how spread out the group is and what the average speed is. Our desire to not break the law and lead by example constrains us here.
Consider the following where the group average speed is 85kph and a marshall stops at the side of the road for 90 seconds. That's equivalent to the group being spread over about 2km. If the marshall then plays catch the leader it will take them nearly 13 minutes if they maintain their average speed +10 on the main group. Of course you could get there quicker but what message would that send? It could also be a lot of time spent in the opposite lane.
Fwiw I don't think playing catchup is viable. Shortcuts? Now that's a different story. Has anyone put the route into google maps/quikmaps/wises etc? I don't even know where it goes yet.

you have not seen this group ride  but yeah its the effect on the rest of the group that has to be managed .. there will be two rolling re-groups on the ride as distance & terrain will allow this, but until I see the route on the 14th & get to discuss it with those who rode on the 7th & at the meeting on the 14th can really get to brass tacks .. obviously the marshals will have to be all on board with wots decided as well

Might work if we create a block between the 250's and the rest with yellow vests ! (not to be taken as an aggressive *block*)

nods with pace slow still need to ensure space around the individual thats up to everyone to monitor ..
only reason I am keen for this as experienced riders end up at the front bored with the pace & the newbies struggle with the faster pace at the rear

Have to say here Sandra, my wrists will cop a bashing that day either in front of, or behind the 2fitys ! You get someone impatient, who goes fuck this i'm gonna play! Where would you rather he play ? in amoungst the learners or with ppl who would sit upright, put their hands on hips and make him feel the idiot ?
Personal opinion i think they are safest at the rear ! (no pressure on them )! Packs regrouping along the way, so it dont matter if it splits, Which it wont if the leaders only doing 90 or less !
Will say that this is the perfect ride to coax any noob's that might like to, but are shy to ride with a group ! Low speeds, well spread out at the back, with experienced marshalls along the way to give plenty of warning of hassards etc ! Couldn't ask for a better day to try a group ride ! The odd stop so any questions about group riding can be asked (or for that matter good ideas, politely mentioned to noob's)

I would rather they do not play at all .. however its something I guess I will have no control over .. mind you my chanceyy speechs are pretty clear cut & touch wood so far no one has misbehaved ..
the problem is after several min the group will be spread out over a distance & the rear riders generally being the newer ones & trying to stay out of the way are the ones who feel the pressure to try & ride faster even though there will be plenty of TEC
going by the road code they also state the new riders need to be behind the leader .. when I first read it though hell no .. but after seeing a few large group rides I am now inclined to agree .. also thought of having the 250 riders behind the marshals & with another marshal behind them so no one passes that marshal .. gives them a bit of a safety buffer ...
anyhow its all just a thought at the moment .. not sure about reality .. but will get a general consensus & go with that ..

Do like the idea of the buffer behind the noob's !~
Remembering that 70 k is the speed some will be traveling at ? and if there will be police riding/driving with us the L plates will obey the limit !
though your idea of learners at the front 150 odd k's at 70 ks is hard for experienced guys, but most (MOST, screw the rest) don't mind having a smoke or a yak at stops along the way and Learners appreciate others waiting for them ! It does work, and a talk to the Learners to let them know that they also have leaders If the main pack rides away and there is no need to play catch up, might work !
("Throwing them at ya" only ideas !!)

Hmm the police will not be with us for the whole ride & pretty hard to pull one rider out of the pack .. approx 90 ks at the front should not be a stretch for most newbie riders

yup like them idea :niceone: most experienced riders if they are at the back will not be doing 70 ks for sure .. also most of the time with our rides as you know there are plenty of smoke breaks but as we are on a time schedule this will not be the case on this ride .. 144 ks is not a huge distance but at a slow pace yes it could be .. hence we have the ability to change the distance at several points and make it a shorter ride but no actual stoppages as such til near the end
there will be two rolling re-groups on the ride to deal with the SH .. & a final re group that will be a full stop before close formation riding into the square

Similar to the toy run I went on last year,we rode around the mountain, leaving NP at 10.30,lunch in Hawera at 12.Normally it takes 50 mins NP-Hawera,they had a stop in Stratford to close the gaps, arrived in Hawera about 12.30ish.No way am I giving the learners rubbish, but a couple of times I went to take off to pass and had to back off,due to a learner not watching indicators on my bike(yep they were going at least 5 secs prior).
The route you guys take ,the yellow coats will be familiar with?So when they become TEC,could they be able to take a quick detour to meet up down the line, should they wish to rejoin and be able to point or direct further down the trip.
If the ride is say 140km,and if cruising at sedate speeds then realisticly it could take 2-21/2 hrs with stops depending on the road conditions, amount of riders etc.Is this(time) acceptable to you guys who will know the route, and probably ride it significantly quicker than others not familiar with it.

Hey Sandra,
Has anyone considered first aid? It doesn't seem to get a mention in this thread so on the assumption it hasn't I'll go chat with our medics and get my first aider's qual refreshed. They may also help in stocking a triage bag. I expect the following would be useful.
Triangle bandages
Field dressings
Plastic bags
Sharp scissors
Tape
Bottled water
Blanket
Gloves
EAR masks
Pencil and paper
I should have a pack rack fitted by the end of the week so I don't mind carrying the ball. If there's someone coming along more qualified than me I'll gladly make number two.

Yeah, I have a St John's one that I used to carry but it's full of gimmicky things that probably aren't actually much use at the scene of a motor accident. A few of big field dressings, half a dozen triangular bandages and a bottle of water would be more useful IMO.
Needless to say, once I get my new rack and bag fitted the old first aid kit will be retired to the bathroom.

There's a coffee caravan in the square (opposite Highflyers, next to Pacha's kebab caravan.... Mmmm, kebabs) weekdays over lunchtimes. Don't know if she's there on weekends. And there's a new mobile coffee trailer on Rangitikei St next to the Westpac bank, not quite opposite McD's.
I know all this and I don't even drink coffee!

Mine was upgraded after an off on a ride includes irrigators & stuff that is much more useful to motorcyclists ..

hmm so anyone in palmy free to go have a chat & let them know wot the plan is & gain a contact phone number for me, if they are interested in having a caravan on both sites .. just thinking a hot drink might be useful before & definately after the ride ..
