Not sure when this happened but it's on Stuff at the moment:
Wellington Police and ambulance are at the scene of a crash between two cars and a motorbike in the Terrace Tunnel.
The tunnel is currently blocked both ways and police advise taking an alternative route.

As one Tiger rider to another, I wish you all the best for your recovery.
Must have felt a bit like a rat in a trap, being in a tunnel and all, confronted by a driver-less trailer and hemmed in by cages and tunnel walls!

police have said charges will be laid for careless use of a motor vehicle causing personal injury. Could be suspension of license for the car driver or a jail sentence even if there are previous circumstances.
The person should really be appointed as my personal transporter for the next 6 months, as the prime victim all i get is ACC.....
will post pics of the bike soon

Just put you story forward, and it is only careless, licence suspension is not mandatory. Tell them the hardship it will cause for you to lose your licence.
Good luck

Thanks for sharing!
Man all i wanted to do was thank those that saved my life and a whole media circus starts turning. Even had to say no to One News for a video interview in the hospital with Ron Mark, enough is enough.
If the talk was about poor driving standards, that would be different.

A New Zealand MP has saved a biker’s life – but says he is not a hero.
Herman van Krieken was struck by a trailer going through The Terrace Tunnel. Ron Mark and his partner Chris Tracey stopped to help – and Mr Mark prevented Mr van Krieken from bleeding to death by using his fist to plug (van Krieken’s) main artery.
Mr Mark said "I just heard the bang and I saw him flying through the air. I had my fist there the whole time, he wasn't gushing blood all over the place, but there was bleeding and it was clearly a double compound fracture of the lower leg.”
Mr van Krieken wrote to Prime Minister Helen Clark saying that when he came to, he was "absolutely staggered" to see Mr Mark "on his knees on the road with his tie on and having his finger up my main artery".
Mr Mark said he was no hero. He had family members in the fire service, police and St John Ambulance who helped save lives every day. "I don't really think I did a lot."
I think everyone should congratulate Mr Mark on being a true hero – without his speedy action, someone could have died. Well done that man.
Not entirely sure about the trailer. A witness mentioned to me that it came off a car going in the same direction as me and the driver started to slow down to control it, not much you can when that happens. Leaves the question on the safety chain ? ? ? Where were the instructions and training?????:Oi:

Commend the person on his actions Yes. Talk it up because he is a politician NO....
Lot's of people live in the hope it's what anyone would do, if they were at the scene of something like that..
Just because the person is a "politician" the incident and his "media labelled heroism" is going to get more milage than if it was let's say "another passing motorist"....
Spare a thought and a moment or two for the people that are not so fortunate, that people are so ignorant or selfish, or just plain couldn't give a fuck, that they drive past the scene of an accident, and right past someone who is screaming at the top of their lungs for someone to stop and help, as a person close to them dies in their arms.
Good on the person Mr Mark for stopping, leave the political side of things out of it.
Ouch. Hope you heal well mate.
As I come from the UK, whether he is an NZ politician doesn't matter a fig to me. I just wanted to put this out there having found it - fantastic piece of heroism, whether he wants to be called one or not.
It always fascinates me that people who do truly heroic things like this are often so modest about what they've done.
Romeo
28th May 2008, 03:28
Woah, that's pretty awesome.
I think that expecting the average person to plug a major artery is a bit much. Ron Mark was in the army for like, forever, then he was the head of some arab special forces or something. He'd know what to do, and has probably killed a number of people with his bare hands. The average person (me included) probably wouldn't have the training or stomach to do that.
Good on him though, supprised I haven't heard about this in the mainstream.

Hooray! Welcome home! As for the trailer, when I saw it when I rode past (police had just turned up to the scene at that time), there was a definite person sized dent in the front. SO I'm not sure what the person was saying about the trailer driver having slowed down.
Anyway, I hope you recover well :)

thanks guys,
am moved by your support. the insurance companies have been great, got all my gear replaced, just need my leg to come right so i can walk to check out the new rides. :sunny:
As for the owner of the car that towed the trailer, he will forever feel guilty for not having had the balls to come forward and make amends. I am over it!
All i can say is when you ride, make sure you wear all the right gear, it saved my limbs and possibly my life! :done:

Hi 6ft5 - sorry to hear about the outcome of the trial! :argh:
The Wellington Community Law Centre could help - they give free legal advice.

Just want to let him feel the same pain I am having and will have for a further few yearsI see you are feeling very angry, and with good cause. 8-(
You dont want to hear this, but revenge is not a way forward for you. What's done is done, and while it's normal to feel angry about it today, your life will be stopped while you cling to it. Talk to your doc and tell him how angry you are feeling and ask for some support. He'll put put you onto some people who can help you repair this part of your self - it's no different to repairing any other broken part of you.
All the best,
Steve
Ok guys, I am so over this episode that I decided to buy another bike and move on
So I bought Harley something FL.... yeah yeah, laugh all you want and signed up with HOG international etc...bla bla bla.
But I have also contacted the Sensible Sentencing Trust to try and find out if there is a way to get some revenge here. Obviously the justice system sucks for victims, so I figured, i'll go and rustle up some hardcore right activists to shake the system. God knows what comes out of this but who knows.
In the meantime, I think I will go back to the media to see if they are interested in a follow up article to give the whole thing some sting and see if in my case the driver fronts up with at least an apology or something.
