My first crash yesterday

Well after all these years of riding motorcycles I finaly had my first crash,though it was really about 20-30kph into a small embankment.
But any way I made the big mistake of riding down Taradale? road (the road between Hastings and Taihape) and I'm sure I saw no signs telling me it was all gravel right through.

So I was riding in second gear at about 30kmph down hill and approached a corner so I slow down but I got cought in some grove that cars had crated and drifted too much to the left at too high a speed so I try to swerve right into the embankment and ended up with front wheel stuck in a hole and my exhaust pipes (the bottom part under the engine) keeping the bike from going any further.

I'm glad I steered it into that embankment because if I continued straight I would have riden over the edge. So the damage was some minor scratching on the exaust cover and my right mirror twisted that required a rachet to get it back in place and my pride.

Now is it normal to be concered about your bike than yourself when you have a crash? Because that's all that went through my mind when I came off.

Cripes...gravel. Hate the stuff. Glad you and your bike are ok. From what I read on here it would appear normal to worry more about your bike than yourself.

You don't want the kind of accident that doesn't start and end in you thinking "hope the bike's OK" ...

Crikey! Sounds like you got off okay and it sounds like the bike is okayish as well? So did you manage to work out where you could have kept it together and made it around? :yes:

Hahaha yup! I'm not a `crasher' myself, but I did think that -- and I've seen others have a wee lie down on the road, and that was all they were worried about too :lol:

Sounds like a deep hole you got stuck in. CB900 -- the zorsts go underneath the frame, right? Not pinched/bent at all where they supported the bike? That's some engineering :woohoo:

Its when ya do like i did and leave the Mrs scrambling back up the bank and run to pick the bike up, after we got blown into the barrier on the takas it becomes a worry ! She was ok though, Just bent the bars a bit and smashed a chain cover !

Pipes are fine and they do go under the frame which is good because they stopped me going any further. Luckly the the road was being constructed on and the mound of dirt was soft so all I had to do was brush the dirt off the pipes.

Hell yes. The beautiful bike all scratched up and busted was all I could think about in the ambulance.

The one time (in band camp) I had a car vs bike extravaganza I didn't even remember I had a bike. I next saw the bike after being carted away in the ambulance about a month later in the bike shop. Written off totally. My that was sad.

To paraphrase the pilots, any bike crash you can walk away and be worried about the bike is a "good" crash ...

While on the subject of my bike. Does anyne know why my bike judders when I'm in either 1st or second gear as I let go of the throttle to slow down? This is of course been happening before the crash;)

Apologies if below is too basic:
Does this happen as you let the clutch out changing down - ie. banging down into to high revs for the gear?
If so try blipping the throttle or break longer before changing down.


Otherwise we might need more detail to work this out.

Nothing to do with clutch as I can be cruising in second but let go of the throttle and it will start to judder as the speed drops.

Revs dropping too low for gear you're in? Probably not or someone more experienced than me would have written that but does the juddering go away when you pull the clutch back in? Glad to hear you're ok; i don't mind gravel to ride on except that with my little legs, lack of muscly testosterone-laden limbs (and a relatively heavy bike) i find it a little disconcerting having to do slow maneuvering and not being able to get decent traction if my feet are down. Oh yeah, it's not unusual to hear "don't worry about me, how's my bike?" :pinch:
