View Full Version : So I've got this friend...

And yes he is a friend (not the proverbial me in third person thing) who is a very large guy, stands 6ft and is generously rotund... he is keen to get into biking more as a fuel cost saving measure than for the love of it (that will follow). He has been asking me what type of bike (cruiser style) would suit him. I have a Yammy XVS250 and he likes it but it is a little pressured under his manly girth. He has seen Keeway cruisers on trademe and is keen to sit on one and try it out.

What I would like to know is - what did other 'larger' bikers start on...?

I almost feel that he needs an exemption in order to allow him to be on a 400+ for his learners. We are going bike shopping this Friday but suggestions would be most welcome.

I think you aren't allowed to weigh more than the bike you ride. I'm not sure where I saw that in the LTSA code. :niceone:

So if you ride on, are you a Burg-er?? Or a Burg-ee??

Or if you drop it, do you yell "Burggar"

And if it was cold, would it be an IceBurg?

Thank you. I'm here all week. Try the veal, and be sure to tip your waitress.

Your mate could apply for an exemption from the licencing restrictions because of his size and also for safety reasons (They always like that aspect).

That way he could ride a bigger bike, like a Boulevard C50T fo example :msn-wink:, while still on his learners licence.

Licencing exemptions, while not given out freely, are not that hard to obtain either.

Give the LTSA a ring and chat to them about it.

They are quite helpful if your upfront with them and remain calm.

We should all use the exemption system more often, just because we can and because we are entitled too!!!

Failing that, like I said before theres always more than one way to skin a cat.....

Book a trip to Raro come home with a Tan and a Full Rarotongian Bike Licence, convert it to a Full NZ Bike Licence for $45.
Could possibly be the cheapest and is certainly the fastest option to obtaining a Full NZ Bike Licence

Dont ya just love the fine print in our our licencing laws :yes::yes:

Yeah, I hear ya. I'm about the same and had a CBX250RS and an RZ250 and got by. Have always had sport bikes (never considered the CBX a sport bike). HARDEN UP!

Yeah, I'd recommend going the exemption way... Photo's on bikes is always good for getting one.

Have fun shopping!

I'm 5'11" and about 100kgs - I find my Hyosung GV250 is just a touch on the small side, and it seems to be about the biggest 250 cruiser. I think your mate would find the Keeway too small.

As the others have said, the exemption route may be worth a crack - get a photo of your mate on a GN250, that usually seems to do the trick from what I've read online.

Look... Im just over 6 foot, around 170+kg with thunder thighs and a huge belly! (big thighs are what stops me riding sports bikes):jerry:

Having said that and descibed that I'm a poster boy for slimm ppl....
:spanking:

....the GV is a Great bike to learn on.

I am comfortable riding it, it gets to 110km ok, and is great for around town... little bit tedius for long trips and frustrating when your following a car doing 90k as you dont have the getup and go to pass safely.

I'd recommend this bike to almost anyone who is starting out and don't have the proportions to ride a sports bike!:niceone:

I'm only in this thread as a sight-seer, noting the size of all you big fellas, LOL... I need a nice big chaperone while I am here all by myself, to keep me safe (and outta mischief, ya know) ... me blokeys will appreciate your efforts, so keep posting your heights/sizes: I'm taking copious notes

From Burger King?

seriously though, what about a trike even?

From Burger King?

Well, yes, in a sense; one suspects that the model name of that particular Suzuki is derived from said eating establishment, inasmuch as after too many years of too many Whoppers, it's the only thing that one can still keep up with the boys on.

Thanks heaps to those who have given useful / helpful advice, we will look into some of the options given. To the one or two with the less useful advice - correct me if Im wrong but... arent these forums supposed to be places where like minded people can interact and ask for / give out advice without having to be bagged for it?

I guess even decent sites have to have a lowest common denominator... :bleh:

Oh... and the berg / burg idea (however its spelt...) I thought the same thing when my friend posed his dillemma to me... I have seen them in Wgtn MC and thought that they would be ideal for the larger lads and lasses to do their learners license on but the mere mention of a scooter just about had me pounded into the kitchen floor... Thanks anyway :niceone:

Like minded people give out GOOD advice, as well as like minded people giving out BAD advice. AND being a free country... you choose which is which. Choose wrong, and it is then YOUR fault for choosing the wrong advice... and the KB site remains blameless. Choose right and... hey... we're good !!!

No he's not just asking in the third person he actually does have a larger than life mate and it is me.

Thanks for all the responses both good and encouraging, I would try a gym membership but my religon doesn't allow it  and unfortunatly every time I get on my excercycle I peddle like fek'n crazy and don't get anywhere .

Anyhow, I'm looking at bikes this week and had the chance to check out a Hyosung 'Aquilla' 250 (not sure if thes spelt right) tonight really nice bike I thought, quite big for a 250 but its really hard to get a feel for it when you can't go anywhere on it and have one foot on the ground.

I am a total noob when it comes to bikes, I have little to no experience and am more than a little anxious having to change to this as my mode of transport, however its gotta be cheaper than $210 a f/n on gas.
