Yep, I give on a regular basis.
Doesn't hurt anything like needing a transfusion would. Just a bit of discomfort for 2 seconds.
Then free choccie bikkies and orange "drink"

Yep.. my youngest son was prem & thanks to my local hospitals' major stuffups at his birth :bash: ended up in the neo-natal Intensive care unit in Wgtn in a coma & not expected to live.. while in Wgtn, amongst a heap of other care he needed.. he had a blood transfusion.. I don't know his blood type off hand.. but I am sure thankful to who ever gave him theirs..!
Last 6 times I've tried, they turned me down, due to various reasons, cold, broken limbs, AIDS... just the usual.
I'll keep trying though.

I love watching the needle go in. it's the small jab in the finger that gives me the shits every time.
it's good for guys to give blood. gives a way to get rid of iron from the blood, we dont seem to bleed from as many sabre tooth mammoth wounds as we used to.....

I always TRY but they end up turning me away.
No matter how hard I try to eat iron-rich foods (beforehand), I always seem to be slightly anaemic when I get there, and they send me packing, with a letter to my doctor to feed me more iron tablets, ugh, hate those things.

Could be the nurse is a n00b? an old hack told me that watching closely sometimes makes the newer folk a bit nervous and more likely to miss the vein....

I did it today, just before I bought my new bike.
I'm O+
It was my 10th time so they gave me a bag with a gift.
I do it coz it makes me feel like a better person and somehow believe it may erase some of the bad I've done in the past.
Every drop counts.

A mate had his vein missed, they wiggled around and got it... he was bruised for well over a month  Since then, its been my only request that they hit the vein please. This one guy I had... sticks the needle in... says "Oops", I'm like, WHAT... "just joking" comes the reply... :girlfight: Although he did let me hold the packet of blood afterwards... that was cool, because it was still at body temp.

Have to be 16 if I remember correctly, and be over 55kg ish.
I would be into the teens now, of donations, tried to donate as soon as possible, and was calculating on 4 per year, to reach 100 donations asap... work has put paid to this. Never seem to get the time to track down a centre, so I go to the one close to home when it comes round... only twice a year dammit. :weep:

I used to donate every chance I got ... often there are blood clinics in offices in wellington city ... but they stopped me giving blood a 11 years ago now. Apparently if you have a disease they don't know the cause of (I have multiple sclerosis) they don't like you to donate ... oh well :(

One of the messrs hellkat likes to drink lots of Guinness, so I keep optimistically waiting for medical science to discover that there is huge amounts of iron in semen, especially that of Guinness drinkers.

I'm up to about 40-50 but doing plasma every two weeks helps boost the numbers.
Cheers to you all that head along and give so much, to all that don't...but can, hey once every three months too much to ask.
Maybe think of a riding mate sideswipped by a cage and your few mL's of blood could be that last bag they need to hang to save their life...is it still not worth the wee prick of pain?

Me too. (O+) that is. I only found out by having the doc look up my maternity records. Haven't gone for a long time, in fact last time I went they turned me away for being too scrawny (OMG, that must have been a long time ago...) Keep meaning to do it but never get round to it. So, I will bend over for a series of kicks up the backside and hopefully they'll propel me to the nearest clinic!
Good on you, you regulars :Punk:
I guess it helps when you don't have an aversion to needles.
Was donating back in France, then came over here...and been told to, please, not giving my blood since i was French and lived (obviously) more than 6 months there in the 90's...:angry2:
Does anyone know why? Is it only because of the mad cow disease? (bloody rosbeef lol)!

Yeah, I asked them a while ago which was actually best for them, and they said, if you can, please do whole blood, as quite a few bloody products are made from it.
Re not being able to donate, its a double edged sword. NZ has one of the highest quality blood supplies in the world, but thats partly because how stringent they are. Less stringent, less quality, but more supply.
NZ also doesn't pay for blood donations (I believe the US does pay its donors) which also lowers the number of donors, but also reduces the number of "undesirables" aiming for the money instead.

Sounds like a good scheme.

Would have like to have thought this too, but unfortunately history has a way of repeating itself.
They could have tested for hep C in 1991, but didn't until 1995. Even then it was as a result of mounting pressure from the increasing number of those that acquired hep C from tainted blood.
One could of course argue that failure to contract hep C would likely have resulted in death, however, there was the option of having cake and eating it too.

Just gave another 470ml today. Lisa started off slowly (she has small veins bless her cotton socks :p) and they almost stopped her at around 300ml but she jumped that stress ball like a little demon - I was dumb enough to say 'if you go into the green then i'll give you $20" - just before she did... The nurse said she never would so I thought the odds were pretty good, in fact Lisa almost got it to 'full flow' but ran out of space in the bag.
I only got the usual small round plaster, she was adorned with a nice big blue pressure bandage - made it look like I didnt try hard enough or something :weep:

In the other thread I mentioned how I nearly passed out when they took blood (I have haemochromatosis, which means my body stores iron) for the first time, but I went along again two weeks ago for my second treatment. Worse than the first! Two nurses tried - one on each arm - and failed to find a vein! Both were sure they had found one, but even after pulling out the needle a bit and wiggling it around, no blood flow. They only try once in each arm before giving up, so I still haven't had my treatment and I have to pluck up the courage to go back again. This will be a lifelong process for me, so I'm not looking forward to it.
I have really fine veins and thought the blood service would be okay finding them, but as a friend pointed out, people with fine veins don't usually volunteer to be blood donors, so they aren't used to dealing with them!
I'm hoping to book my next appointment when the haemotologist is there as he has experience in finding fine veins.

Don't underestimate those damn things. I was cycling to and from a donation when they brought them in, and I was as nervous as hell that it wouldn't hold, so got them to give me extra. I was making sure throughout the day that it was still sticking.
Well... come evening... I just about screamed like a girl when it came time to pull it off. It is still the most painful part by far of the entire process. Shit they stick.

I was pretty sure I was going to have similar trouble to you again this time- last time I donated they stuck me with a trainee, he had a go once in each arm - first side he didn't hit the vein at all, second side he went right through the other side, I said I didn't want to have to make another appointment so they did it a third time, taking from a side vein instead of the middle one, well that came up in a tennisball sized bruise within half an hour :crybaby: this time I got an actual registered nurse who took her time and managed to get right first try, though I still maintain part of that is due to all the sugar and caffeine I purposely consumed beforehand

I got one of those ones too, the pressure bandage isn't to stop the bleeding, its to stop me coming up in bruises, though I don't actually mind, I got some spectacular purples and reds on the last one, its when it turns yellowy that it looks really nasty.
Boss came around the other day and asked who was keen to give some. Think half of the workshop is going down to donate next Monday

Has anyone thought of organising a KB group donation similar to what BRONZ does? I think it would be a good way to make sure we go back after 3 months........group encouragement?
Each time Ive gone in, Ive always had a nice nurse...... I just hate getting my finger pricked.

That was kind of my idea, but i only thought of it after i'd been booked in. Not due for another two months i think... I'll be sure to organise something for next time though.

Sorry to do a shameless plug for such an important and overlooked good cause, but, the BADD run on 24 Aug will have NZ Blood onsite to recruit donors with a view to opening up branches on a saturday to do the actual deed....btw they need at least 32 donors to open up for a group donation, which Ive been informed is a days work for them.
