Auckland Zoo has lost one of its favourite animals with the sudden death of its popular giraffe Kay.

Kay, who was born at the zoo in 1986, died a few minutes after falling in the zoo's giraffe paddock about 9.45am today.

"Kay's death is a real shock to us all, coming without any warning, and naturally staff are very upset," Auckland Zoo director Jonathan Wilcken said.

BBQ at the zoo tomorrow night, 6pm. BYO.

Your posts are in bad taste. That poor bloody animal, it should have been left out on the savanah or wherever it came from. RIP old girl.

To be fair she didn't really know any better. I think its different for animals like a giraffe though. They don't strike me as the type of animal that needs to run wild and free like lions or that poor tiger.

Just my opinion though.

The zoo IS where she came from if you read it properly. And the zoo's in NZ and not like the old ones that have the animals in cages. The animals are housed in paddocks NOT cages.
Orana Park (Christchurch)... for example... have only birds in cages and they are actually called avaries (bird housing).
There are organisations that make sure that animals in zoo are now treated as if they were living in the wild.. or as close to as possible. There are rules and regulations they zoo's HAVE to abide by to keep their licence. And there are audits to make sure that the staff training is all up to date and that the staff are competent of looking after the animals.
There is alot of work that goes into animal keeping in zoo's that the general public will never know about.
To work in a zoo as an animal keeper you need to have qualifacations to prove you are not stupid. They dont hire any old tom dick or harry.
And then the public complains when they see wild animals killing and eatting live animals. Get a grip...
Zoo's are keeping the likes of the wild cats, giraffes, wild dogs and many other highly endangered animals from being extinst thu breeding programmes.
They are also breeding to release some animals e.g the kiwi and blue duck.

Bahahahahahahahahahah.... big cage, little cage, what's the difference? You can't leave your street, or you can't leave Seddon, what's the difference? You'd be happy with either of those options? Or it's ok for them cause they're just animals??

Good plan on the BBQ though... why waste it?

:Oi: I never said it was ok.... i said that the keepers do all they can to make life for the animals in the zoo as much like the wild as possible. Also most of the animals in zoo's were born there so to them its their home.
And yer if i couldnt leave Seddon i would be fine with it.. i actually like it.. would rather the country than the stuck up city any day!!

my two cents

RIP Kay, you were a beautiful and majestic creature who helped me with lots of assignments throughout the years.

as for giraffes not being the type that need to run wild and free like the tiger and lions... umm... giraffes are savannah animals, they run loads on a daily basis (trust me, i've seen them do it!) they're very similar to horses in the way that they like to run...

but yes, Kay was born in the zoo, so from where she was standing she probably thought she had it good, I mean food DELIVERED to you! though i WOULD prefer that she'd been born in a nice game reserve in Africa...
