Muriwai Beach + Dirt on the chain

Short thread here.

Got a couple of questions.

1) Is it legal to ride on the (Muriwai) beach? Ofcours the speed limit etc etc....

2) Musicman told me that after his ride on the 90 mile beach (CC Challenge), his bike's chain got soaked(?) with sand. How can that be treated?

Beaches in New Zealand are designated as highways so if you can get to 'em you can ride on 'em. However this doesn't mean open road speed limits apply. Oreti Beach down here has a posted limit of 30kph due to the large number of people wandering around with small children, dogs, bicycles and such.

As far as the sand goes the oil on your chain is like glue upon which fine particles of sand get stuck. working their way into your links and having a similar wearing effect on your chain and sprochets as...well....sandpaper. If you're gonna ride on a beach often then get a belt driven Buell.

Is there a way to clean it? Degrease? Water? re-lube?

theres gotta be a way to clean it, otherwise all those boys that race at oreti during the burt challenge would be forking out for new chains. even the ones that dont race, but ride, to the beach during the weekend.

Muriwai Beach is definately classed as a road. It would be adviseable to do a check with the park rangers for that area, to see if there are any "local" rules applied there.

As for cleaning i would get the bike up ona paddock stand ideling over and flush the chain with turps or other solvent.

Have heard that you can clean the chain before riding in the sand so it is dry and the sand does not stick. Then just lube up when you're done!

Rego and WOF required and they were being checked a while ago. My son had been up there learning to ride on his KX80. I could not get the chain clean afterwards so ended up taking it off, soaking it in degreaser and then water blasting it. It's nice and clean now, bit rusty though and it rattles. Need to cook it up in some grease, just gotta make a suitable container.

There's bound to be better ways of going about it, eh.
