View Full Version : Project ZXR - The Streetfighter

Well... Its been a crazy year since the ZXR was stolen.
Took me a few months to decide what to do with the bike after I brought it back from the insurance co. About November last year I decided to build it into a streetfighter.
Its been a mission and a huge learning curve too.
Some of the work done:
New engine
Modified top triple clamp to accomodate risers and dirt bars
Z1000 mirrors
Zeta mirror mounts
Powdercoated rear sets and rocker cover
Aftermarket race pegs (black ones and spare gold ones)
Iridium spark plugs
New battery
New radiator
Homemade radiator guard
New paint job (black of-course)
Modified tank (ground off air holes and welded in mesh)
Gold race spec chain
13T front sprocket
New braided brake lines and banjos
Painted triple clamps (and bits ground off)
Aftermarket little headlight
Aftermarket digital instruments
Polished pipe and re-riveted pipe
New stearing head bearings
New rear wheel bearings
New sprocket carrier bearings
New ignition/tank cap/pillion seat locks
New seals, o-rings and diaphram for fuel tap
Shitloads of new bolts
Re-covered leather seat and pillion seat
New aftermarket indicators
636 gold gear shift rod
Blue anodised oil filler cap
New sidestand
And more bling bits which are too small to be worth mentioning here...
All up over 80 hours have been put into just cleaning parts (the engine and the header pipes taking up the most time).
Had to send the ZXR off to an engineer to straighten the subframe, swingarm and frame from the crash damage...
Finally got the bike road legal yesterday.
Still having some teething problems with the bike. The throttle return is sticking and the bike just revs all the time regardless of being in neutral and having the clutch in, it just revs to redline... which only started happening when I was riding it home last night... :mad:
So right now trying to figure out how to get the bike back to work so we can play with it some more...
All in all I'm stoked with the progress made. I think the bike looks shit hot and for the 10-odd minutes last night that it didn't have any problems I was grinning from ear to ear... its good to be a biker again...
Thanks to the streetfighter boys for all the advice and encouragment while nearly everyone else was laughing at me and thinking I was wasting my time and money... Thanks to Allan at Mt Eden for all his help with the bike and to Mt Eden motorcycles for all the support and advice (and shitloads of parts).

Well there are a few more bling things to be done, so the bike is not complete in my eyes. But at least for now its road legal :headbang:
I'll be taking better pictures once its complete...

That is one hot streetfighter.
One question: Are your front indicators going to stay where they are ? They look a bit sticking out. have you taught putting them on the side of your gorgeous headlight ?
The bike looks primo - I admire your dedication :clap:

lol been really busy... do you mean the purple grips? I still have them, but I couldn't get them nice a clean and the theme of the streetfighter was going all black with small amounts of other colours as possible (I tried sticking to blue as my secondary colour... but yeah some red and some gold slipped in :innocent:)

I quite like the indicators coming off the radiator, the angle they come off at is cool, and I've never seen anyone else do something similar.
By moving the indicators to the headlight will require more wiring and a new bracket for the headlight/indicators... and right now its such a small thing I can't be bothered changing it...
~~~
As I mentioned above the bike crapped out on me on my first ride. So its back at the shop now, and on Monday night we'll be re-routing the clutch and throttle cables (might even re-lube them all) and then check the carbs to make sure its not sticking... need to find why its revving to redline in neutral lol... :shit:
But as a wise man told me... when you stress out and try to rush shit ole Murphy comes along and fucks with you... so I'm not stressing about it, and I was expecting some teething problems anyway... so yeah... whats a few more days with no bike compared to the last year without one lol:Punk:
I love my bike :love:
oh... and the indicators don't look so bad when you consider my temp guage is on the side too (look on the left hand side just above the radiator)
You can get quarter turn throttles from most bike shops (Call in and see me at Mt Eden M/C ... can help you out :Punk:). They start off pretty cheap ($30 odd if I remember for the cheapies). But you'd be better off getting the slighty more expensive ones with the metal inner puller thingy (lol I really should know what thats called... *makes mental note to find out*)
Depending on which one you get you might need to get a new switchblock for the throttle side as some take some room and yeah...
Looking pretty sweet.
If i was going to be picky i'd say you need to shorten the exhaust to about 2/3 what it is now - it just looks way to long.
Also with it being 'empty' at the front it makes the bike seem biased to the rear somewhat. It'd makes it much more of a 'fighter if the tail section was angled up a good 10-15deg to make it look a tad more angry.
Otherwise I like it. Very well done, and looks pretty professional too. Saw you in at Mt Eden MC the other week but you were busy and I had to get on my way.
Thanks for the honest remarks... Yeah I thought about cutting down the pipe, but figured it was something that could wait... Still considering it though
Also thought about the tail section, but again, a LOT of work... subframe modifications, tail sections arnt cheap either and not a huge range available here, and anything from overseas is barely worth the money for the what the bike is at the end of the day.
Its been so much work so far, the next one will be better :) and bigger lol
I've looked into the 1/4 turn throttle thing, and there is only one that will fit the ZXR (as the ZXR has two throttle cables... and most of them are made for just one). Its not the same as mine, I can't seem to find the supplier for mine or the brand for that matter.
Anyway, the 1/4 turn throttle is about $149, and the adjuster screw is another $5. So about $155 all up not including installation. Also you might need to modify or have custom cables made as I'm not sure if the standard cables will just plug right in (mine arn't standard... again can't find the supplier/brand).
If your keen PM me
