Sila gets at least 17 years for killing girls outside party

A man who drove a car into crowd of partygoers (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10518494), killing two girls, has been sentenced to a minimum of 17 years in jail.

Lipine Sila was last month found guilty for his angry rampage in a car that scattered partygoers along Christchurch's Edgeware Road in May 2007, hitting 28 people and killing Hannah Rossiter and Jane Young, both 16.

Jurors found him guilty of murder of the two school girls, and guilty of intentionally causing grievous bodily harm to eight other people who were injured as he sped away.

Justice John Forgarty at the High Court in Christchurch today sentenced Sila to life with a minimum of 17 years in jail.

The defence had tried to convince the jury at his murder trial that the driving had been the result of panic by Sila who had been under attack in the street minutes earlier, and had sped away for his own safety.

But the crown argued that it was an act of anger, and that Sila had wanted to harm people and had aimed for the densest part of the crowd where partygoers were milling on the street. That was where the two schoolgirls received their non-survivable head injuries. They died in hospital early the next day.

17 is the minimal NON-Parol period.

So thats the least amount of time he is going to spend in jail.

17 years is at least an improvement on what we usually see. There was a recent case of Laxman Rajamani who had a history of abusing his wife, culminating in him smashing her on the head with a brick then as she tried to escape him he grabbed her from behind and slit her throat. He pled not guilty and his defense was that she 'provoked' him. He got found guilty and he got *12 years*.

The argument is often that murderers don't re-offend and deserve another chance and that seems to be what our sentences reflect. Car thieves, burglars we can give chances to, sometimes 100 or so before they get a sentence that reflects the damage they cause, but murder?

They've killed someone, ending their existence and chance of life permanently, their family have their lives destroyed and will never get over it and yet the justice system seems to think these people deserve another chance? Kill someone when your 20 and your out when your 32 a bit of an inconvenience having to spend a few years in jail but thats really all it is.

yeah i heard the story...unfortunately the media hasn't got a hold of it so there wont be much coverage, so he will get off light, which is a shame.

I had a few acquaintances that were hit and had met janes older brother chris young at a music gig one time (he's a lead singer)...what a nice guy, i mean really, my brother and I just chatted to him about stuff and he came across as just this real down to earth nice chap, it's a shame such a tragic thing had to happen to such a nice guy.

He did get life, with a MINIMUM of 17 years. So they won't start testing if he's suitable for early release until 17 years of jail time has passed.
