Sooooo.... while Im deeply engrossed reading the forum here, I hear from the other side of the room :mega: hey thats not bad.. I only got 12 questions wrong...:bash:

OK.. so we have had a little talk about those 12 question and only 1 wrong on the 2nd test :sweatdrop was going to have a go myself but Im now thinking I might just let this one go :scooter:

Here is the link to the motorbike theory questions..

Just so you know... it's totally PISS EASY. Probably helps that I sat the scratchie test less than two years for my C1 license. Don't be scared mate, as long as you study well, and test yourself until you get it ALL correct in practices, then you're all sweet.

Just sat the scratchie last week and got 100% on the practise and 10/10 on the real thing. :shifty:

Bragging rights please!

Interesting one for me was question 33, which talked about the safest part of the road for a motorcyclist to position his bike.

Now I answered in the right hand wheel tracks, which is what I've always been taught.

I'm sure there's been a few guys on this site have been pinged for not keeping left in the lane.

Seems the police and the instructors don't agree on this one.

I sat the practical and theory in UK in 2002. Passed first time and got 100% on the theory.

Then I came to NZ and had to convert my licence - theory test again 2004 - go 'em all right again.

Then I decided to get a bike licence in 2006 - did the scratchies and got 100%.

It struck me as common sense so was easy and logical.

Mind you I did swot and read all the answers, memorise them and then sit the tests. Surprised how rusty I have become though. Just sat the test in the link and got 3 wrong.

Yeah I came to the internal combustion engine late in life. Was a really serious cyclist (Touring, MTB and road racing) from age 14 until 28 then moved to London. Always hated cars and motorbikes coz I thought all them bastards were lazy  and should be pedaling everywhere. got married at age 29 and the wife got fed up driving me everywhere and told me to get off my fat arse and get a car licence. The rest is history really.

They didn't have such things when I started riding. But I got 100%. But onbly because I answered what I knew they wanted, rather than the 'right' answer

Some of the questions and the 'approved' answers are contentious. And some (such as the 'slowing in a curve' one ) depend very much on specific circumstances. Slowing, *why* ? Because the vehicle in front has slowed a bit? or because the curve is a bit tighter than expected? Or because a golden haired child has just run out into the road?. It makes a difference

And on what bike? Engine braking won't do much on a two stroke. And in what conditions? I'd be hesitant of front brake on a wet and greasy corner for anything less than the GHC.

Depending on those aspects, any one of the answers could be correct.

I do not think they should include such "skill" quesdtions in a written test, they should be eveluated in the practical. The written test should stick to knowledge of the rules and uncontested principles.

I got four questions wrong.

Ideal road position (I said centre, not right wheel track)
Which brake is more powerful (I said "both" thinking that combined was better than either front or rear)
Scratches in helmet affecting night vision (I said "makes oncoming cars appear brighter", should have answered "causes reflections")
Likely cause of steering wobbles (I said "light grip" instead of "worn steering parts")

*sigh* looks like the slippery slide has begun... :oi-grr:

When I sat my learners car and bike I got 100%, my mother got 100% and my dad got 2 wrong (when they had to convert to nz licenses 11 odd years ago).

Now I got 3 wrong... :weep: meh, I disagree, as with some of the above.

Re the riding position, I agree with that too. A read through the book actually has several cases where it contradicts itself.

Some aren't hard tho

Which kind of motorcycles are best for road riding?
Off-road machines
Road machines
Road/trail machines

I love the 2nd question.

Question 2:
From the list, select the most important part to check on your motorcycle before you ride.
Brakes
Handlebars
Footrests

Its not like your going anywhere without handlebars, and riding without footrests is a prick so I'd have to pick one of those two.

I did the test and got 10 wrong. Ive had my licence for 35 years and that test is irrelevant for long term licence holders because hundreds of thousands of kms experience supercedes tests for learners. You have to remember there is no hard and fast rule for any given situation that crops up suddenly, keep left, keep right, apply front brakes blah blah blah.... You just have to use common sense and judgement based on experience IMHO. :done:

I got exactly the same ones wrong and I agree with you Riffer. Some of these questions are a matter of opinion, some of which depends on how a rider prefers to ride like breaking through a corner. I don't like how the front brake makes the bike straighten up on corners so I only use the rear brake and I know plenty of riders that feel the same.

Moki

roughly 100% (ish)

However, I have to say that the boneheads who "created" the exam clearly aren't riders themselves because if they were, quite a few of the Qs would have been asked in a slightly different way.

Also, when I took this I knew that it was an exercise in taking a test rather than riding a bike, so I acted accordingly.
