Looks like I might of had a virus on my computer. The antivirus software didn't pick anything up, but I couldn't get on some sites and the windows auto updates turned off and wouldn't turn on. I downloaded windows defender, and ad-aware then updated them. Run the both and they picked up problems and got rid of them. I can now get on the internet sites it wouldn't let me before, and the auto update now turns on.

Only prob now is I can't get rid of the bloody pop ups I've now got. Anyone got any ideas how to get rid of them?

Oh also when I press ctrl alt del, it says "task master has been disabled by administartor", this can't be good.

If you're on a computer with multiple users then there is always an administrator account, just find out how to log into that account and give it a look. As for the popups, you can't do much about them, do they happen on every single website? Or just a few that you go on? Always good to download a popup blocker off download.com

Also, I recommend for you (and many others) to download a program called "C Cleaner", this is an excellent program which cleans up about 800mb+ worth of unused items on the first clean, I have tried this on three different computers with no hassles at all. If your a person that likes to delete cookies, history, and other internet related files, this does them all in a click of a button.

C Cleaner:

What stclingin said with regard to deleting yr cookies history and temp files, you can delete them manually by opening int. expl., tools , int options, del cookies etc , delete all ! Cleans all ya history, cookies, temp files etc !
You should also have a pop up blocker which obviously aint turned on, open int expl. tools, int options, privacy, turn on pop up blocker ! This will also stop the odd file ya DO want to open, but easy enough to do so, the yellow line at the top when it blocks it, is where you allow this one or two to open !

Here (http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download-free-anti-spyware/) is avg free spyware remover which i use as well as adaware and sometimes pick up a few the adaware miss ! This is not any good to ya if ya have norton (then i dont think adaware will run with norton iether) I use the 3 avg free spyware, the avg free antivirus and adaware free spyware ! Touch wood i aint had a problem !

The pop up blocker is on, but obviously not working, as a urban ninja website just opened for no reason!!

Haha Your other user likes ninjas huh ? Or you been googling ninjas , sounds like ya still have a bit of spyware floating around in there ! Run the cc cleaner or delete cookies manually then keep running all yr spyware cleaners , give avg spycleaner a go too (not too sure if it will run alongside defender but worth a crack) i know what its like and if ya don't get on top of em they gonna drive ya to putting a fist through ya screen !
On another note, Have ya had a look at the space you have left on yr pc, If the other user is young i bet its getting full ? Open my computor, and just hold the curser over C drive and it will tell you how much total and how much free space you have ! if you have a D drive as well, check both !
C drive runs your pc so the more space the better there ! If ya have a D drive Thats where you should store files like photos and vids and (kids games)

Sounds more like a malware spy, than a space issue but a lack of space on C will slow yr pc down like ya wouldn't believe, as do the spyware !

Its a bloody minefield out there !
Good luck

Sounds more like a malware spy[....] Its a bloody minefield out there !Don't use your PC for anything important if you suspect malware on it. Anything you use with a password will be sent upstairs and logged before you can blink. Nasty!

Sounds like you have some rather nasty spyware. Its always safest to wipe and reload in these cases, as trying to remove that sort of thing by hand can be very fiddly (editing the registry, manually unloading dll's with regsvr, etc). You'd be amazed at the places malware/spyware hides these days.

OK, instead of the random guessing witnessed above...

Download HijackThis (http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html). Save it to your hard drive somewhere then run it. Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. After a couple of seconds, the log file will open in Notepad. Save it, then post it on here. The log file will reveal what's installed on your machine and what's attached itself to the system and various system components. Once you've posted the log file on here, I can tell you what you need to get rid of.

If you added dont remove it

We had a version of that running on our machines at work that is malicous and not the real thing that caused the same issue you have.

What have you added since the issue?

Boot into safe mode (hammer the F8 key on startup).
Run the whole bleedin lot.

Will clean up 99% of cases. Pay a visit to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/ if you're still paranoid (or still infected).

If all of the above doesn't fix it then for the time it takes to fanny about with the registry, unload services, remove startup items, blah de blah you're probably quicker backing up your data and reinstalling.

rudecopp,

Open up HijackThis, run a system scan, check the following entries then click Fix Checked. Then reboot.

Download Smitfraudfix and combofix (just google them).
Download spybot S&D.
Download Avast antivirus or kaspersky's free antivirus trial.

IE7, Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Reset.
Boot into safe mode (hammer the F8 key on startup).
Run the whole bleedin lot.

Oh sheesh. Yet more downloads and automated scans. The poor guy's already got McAfee and Ad-Aware, and you want to add yet more kernel-level scanning? Obviously you've never seen what happens when two kernel-level applications attempt to lock the same file simultaneously for scanning.

Never have more than one AV solution running at one time. It causes trouble.

Bwahhaaha. You've obviously never seen my dodgy 'fuggit I'll and another mulock' code :sweatdrop

My Bad. Didn't read he had McRapee and you're correct, that POS loads up even in safe mode.

FWIW that's my professional opinion, having worked in IT support for some 13 odd years now and having various wanky IT qualifications.

Or use System Restore????????????????????????
Hadn't thought of that one lol

Far too much work for the lamen bloke to format and relode windows ! Took me 8 hours the first time and 5 the second lol gettin better at it with every virus !
But rude aint got a virus i recon, just bad taste in porn !!
If the problem dont clear with the spyware cleaners, I note ya aint tried avg yet (ya get full service for the first month) I'd pay someone to format it !
Wouldnt mind knowing if avg and macfee are compatible if ya wanna pm one of the guys with that IT knowhow !

I switched fom Explorer a while back. Now use Mozilla and Safari. That and AVG antivirus, and I have been accessing web pages much quicker, and no viruses either.

Give 'em a try. You may be surprised.

Rudecopp,

Run HijackThis and do a system scan. Check this entry:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: Rundll32.exe "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rstcnydv.dll",s

then click [B]Fix checked items. Reboot the machine, then try Internet Explorer and give it a go. If it's still playing up, there are a few things more that could probably do with removing. There are a lot of references to the French (and British) ISP Wanadoo in there. If the machine's not been imported from either France or the UK, that's just a little odd.

If you still get problems you might want to try running HijackThis again and removing the following:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyServer = http=127.0.0.1:7180
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Int ernet Settings,ProxyOverride = 127.0.0.1:7180;maj.wanadoo.fr
O8 - Extra context menu item: Afficher l'image non compressée - res://C:\Program Files\Booster Wanadoo\wanadoo_booster.exe/227
O8 - Extra context menu item: Afficher toutes les images non compressées - res://C:\Program Files\Booster Wanadoo\wanadoo_booster.exe/250
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

To be honest though, your machine could do with a bit of a clean-up. You've got a lot of things running at startup - I imagine the machine takes an age to boot properly. You might try uninstalling a few applications you don't use very often; Paperport, for instance, if you don't use your scanner to do optical character recognition. The Dell Media shit would be another one.

Suggestions to avoid getting the same sort of problem in the future.

Uninstall McAfee. It's shit. Kaspersky's a good AV package, but AVG (http://free.grisoft.com/)'s free edition[/URL] is just as good and ... you know ... free.
Download and install Firefox (http://www.getfirefox.com). And then use it. Not only is it faster than IE to use, it's also less prone to picking up bugs.
Only download stuff from sites you know. If you have children, keep them off the computer, as they'll download any old shite.

If you have children, keep them off the computer, as they'll download any old shite.Aww don't do that. Get an old shitbox P3 and put Ubuntu on it.. Cost = two tenths of fuck all, and theres no way they will get into trouble with that. Kids have lots of fun on the Internet too.. They don't know its not windows and they don't care either.
