View Full Version : Money savers

These days it's hard enough to get by without having to spend a bucket of hard earned cash on your power, grocery, or other bills. While a lot of people would consider that some things are common sense, unfortunately common sense just aint that common no more. There are plenty of self help progranmmes on the TV and articles in the paper about how to save power unfortunately most are about spending money that you don't have in the first place i.e. installing solar this or that - great but you gotta pay for it first. So I thought in the interests of saving a few bucks I'd share what I've found works. If you've got good practicle suggestions that work then please post them so we can all benefit.

Wash clothes in cold water only. Hot water costs a huge amount and there are decent cold water detergents out there that work really well.
Turn it off. If you aren't the room or you're not using it, turn it off. Lights, computers, TV, stereo. If you want the company of noise use a clock radio or something similar.
Hang clothes on the line or in the garage to dry them. Takes a lot longer than running the dryer but saves heaps on power.
Read the price of things. Not to moan about them but to actually compare them. Big bags (of flour or whatever)aren't necessarily cheaper. Take a calculator and do some quick maths. Plain brands aren't always cheaper either.
Putting a brick in the toilet cystern will save water usage - which matters if you're on a meter.

As I said these are pretty standard things but some people might not have considered them. If you have any other ideas (that are actually helpful) then feel free to post them here...

Buy Vegs at the fruiterer and your meat from the mad butcher, the quality is as good if not better and its cheaper, we can buy fruit and veg and meat for a week on $70-$80 easy.
Also buy the specials, bread for example, or buy plain wrap where possible.

lastly, dont waste money on cars, buy bikes and combine your travelling with entertainment !!

Online shopping with woolworths has been working well for me.

You can click on the specials tab and shop pretty much entirely from from that and save a packet, and its only 7.95 for delivery.

Homebrew. I need 5kg of sugar, and a packet of yeast to make 5 litres of vodka.

Pissing outside on your garden saves water usage as well as giving your garden a good dose of piss. If you're really lucky, your hot neighbour may see your huge dick, thinking it's the hose and ask you over for tea. If you're unlucky, your ugly neighbour will see and call the cops.

A "friend" told me about this one: Grow your own cannabis. Sell all that you don't need and use the money to pay the bills. :gob:

Meal planning.

Decide what you are going to eat for the week, make a list of what you need and make one trip to the stupidmarket. Buy the store cupboard/cleaning products when they come up on special.

go to work a little earlier and have your tea/coffee at work. (saves power, water. tea, coffee, milk):sunny:
Don't have your morning dump at home. Save it up and have it at work. (saves toilet paper. water and ya get paid while your doing it.):shit:
If your work has showers have a shower at work before you go home. After all you got dirty in company time. (Saves on Hot water and you don't have to clean the shower.)

I have the maid buying groceries and doing the laundry. I couldn't stand manual labour. I've yet to ask Jeeves how much the Mercedes consumes. I try not to make conversation.

Woolworth's... possibly the most expensive of the supermarket chains. Aviod shopping there and save heaps.

Also: buy flour and baking ingredients and get baking!!

Theres lots of ways to save heating power and simplist is closing doors

But for like $15-30 you can completely outfit your doors with rubber liners on the edges that gets rid of drafts.

Dehumidifiers also work extremely well - easier to heat dry air

* Buy groceries once a week. Absolutely no visits to a supermarket in the middle of the week.
* Buy fruits/veggies/meat from asian market.
* Eating out is for special events only.
* Starbucks is off limits.
* No point in trying to heat outside air, hence no point in heating anywhere apart from your bed (electric blanket).
* Idiot box is for idiots. Enrol to a library. Read a book.
* Correct tyre pressure is not only a matter of safety. Properly inflated tyres save fuel. Slighty overinflated tyres on cages save slightly more. More than slightly overinflated tyres in cages save even more at expense of traction. Don't go there, it is not worth it.
* p2p is there for a reason. Sapienti sat.
* The greedy one pays twice. Research before you buy and where quality matters, buy the best you can afford. Asics jogging shoes cost 5 times as much as nonames from the warehouse but unlike the latter, they will last. Even if you use them for jogging. Same goes for power tools, and many other things.
* DIY:
* If you can't find something off the shelf for your pet home/bike/boat/jet outhouse project, diy. If you can't find it in the shop it means that demand exceeds supply. Make more than one and sell on trademe. If you need it, chances are someone else may need it too.
* DIY peanut butter tastes better and is healthier than anything supermarkets can come up with. Do you know what all those numbers and chemicals in the ingredient list stand for? Me neither.
* Do you really need a gym membership? The last time I checked jogging around One Tree Hill was free.
Just my NZD 0.02...

Aah, but if you swap hands before you finish, you will actually "come into a bit of money..."

+1,
Just realised the front door to the house (which we never use) was letting in a small blizzard, so took to it with a roll of 50mm masking tape, no more draft!
Now I need to fix it properly before we need the door in summer.

Most DIY stores sell the rolls of adhesive rubber strips and so does the warehouse

keep in mind they can make a door harder to shut or close

and the rods with brushes along the bottom should be at least fitted to all doors that have access to the outside and to the door that leads to the internal garage if you have one

I thought NZ purposely chose to be a low wage country, like The Philippines, Thailand and China. Isn't that so 25% of the Kiwi's leave forever and then the fools who run the place, Sue (Spank Me Harder Biatch) Bradford, Aunty (Uncle) Helen, Johhny (Rich Boy) Keys can treat the rest of those that stayed like sheep?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thunk I read it somewhere, prolly on the net. Shit, prolly here on KB.

Better yet, go up and down your street and use your garage remote control opener and see which garage it opens. Whichever one it opens, just help your self to whatever is there. It's yours, because it's your garage door opener and your remote will only work on your garage. You could save a fortune, really.
