Coming back from Hamilton today, I looked down to check the speed again... as I always do.... and buggar me the speedo was no longer working... so I had no idea what speed I was doing from this point on and the speedometer wasnt turning over....

So I need some help from you guys... just browsing through my manual.... and I have found some stuff about it......

Has anyone repaired a speedo before or am I better to get it done at the shop???? and what is it likely to cost to get it fixed....?

1997 Yamaha Virago 250cc cruiser.
I am living in West Auckland... if anyone can help me.

(Hope that this is in the right place.... if not "Spank Me" will you please move it to the right section)

The problem tends to be moisture in the top of the cable causing it to break. Hopefully with a new cable in place it'll work again

I'm not sure it was moisture that made my old speedo cable break, but I disconnected the new speedo cable when I was taking the front wheel off the bike and it wasn't moisture in the top, it was moisture (bloody full of water, it seemed) right through it. There was still grease in there too, so it's ok. But maybe I'll have to check my speedo/odometer instrument cluster to see if it's leaking water inside it and leaking down into the cable...
Sorry for kinda hijacking the thread. Time for me to

Never mind you now have a bike that never ages "forever young' like time stoodstill like me, and one day a few million years from now you can fix it and sell it to some poor unsuspecting bastard. thats what Racey would do! and anyway know this with a 250 cruiser you are doing 120 klm when the rev counter is saying red and 50 when its 7000rpm speedos are for information only.
I saw a VTR 1000 today with paintpen marks on the speedo to advice the limits 50 and 100 we then proceeded to see those marks ignored with gusto.
mind you its nice to have everything working. I would want it fixed too? and I Would sus the cable or the little nylon dog gear thats at the drive end that will cost 1$ and 200$ to fit no doubt? :disapint:

Can you still buy just the inner cable?

Can you still buy just the inner cable?

Used to be able to years ago,in fact you could once take in any cable and they`d make you one up as long as the ends were o.k..Last one I bought was all in one, very easy to fit, shouldn`t take any more than a couple of minutes if it`s the cable, which it normally is.If not a s/hand speedo from a breaker shouldn`t be too expensive, might even get a choice of kms as well.

Sometimes they just come undone and only need to be screwed back into place to get it working again. You will need to try to tighten it to see if it is loose some cables can still be attached but the inner has come out and no spedo will go.

the only thing i can add that is to make sure that it is your cable. once i lost my speedo years ago on an old honda 250, paid and waited 3 weeks for the bloody thing to come from japan to only find out that it was the speedo hub on the front wheel!

come see me after work --Ill sort it out for ya .
otherwise just look at the bottom of the speedo and find the top of the speedo cable -use a pair of pliers to loosen the knurled end nut and undoo the cable from the speedo.
Pull the inner cable out --if a lil short bit comes ou t-ya sppedo cables stuffed. -if not then ya need to look further.

Mine did exactly the same last week. Looked down to see I was doing 60 :( , on the motorway, but then noticed the needle was sort of flopping around. Soon after I was apparently doing 40, and then a few minutes later I was down to 20. Weird as I was keeping up with the traffic. Soon after it died altogether. It was easy to fix when I got home, just connected the cable back up again, as everyone has mentioned above.

More distressing was the fact that I lost the ears off my helmet somewhere along the motorway probably. :crybaby: If anyone sees a pair of tigger ears somewhere between Wellington and Porirua, I'd be most grateful for their return!

Ok I have just looked at the cable... the part to screw up at the front wheel was loose so I re-tightened it up with my fingers...... did a quick test.... still not working...
So then I unscewed it and I pulled out the cable... all in one piece...
so back in it went again... and tightened it up..
another test... nope still not working...

Now I cant see where I would need pliers for this job....lol.

As a precaution, always follow other vehicles that look like they know what the speed limit is.

Has the one piece got square ends??? mine was one piece, but the end was snapped off and still in the drive.....

Got told to undo the cable and just turn it to see if anything moves up at the speedo reading.... and nothing is moving... so would that lead to the cable end being rounded off a bit?

I am really appreciating all the advise being given....

You might be able to use your finger or a drill bit to turn the drive in the back of the speedo. Note that you will need to spin it reasonably quickly to see movement... Try that, and if you dont have any movement then it will be the drive gears in the back of the speedo - often one brass and one plastic for some strange reason, and the plastic one gets worn. A fair bit more expensive($100?) than a cable($30) to replace, but you will be able to get one from the bike shop.
If you fit it yourself, be sure to put a little grease in there before you reassemble it.

Ok I rung Henderson Bikes and then shot down to them...as Adam (the owner)said they would like to check the speedo...

When I got there I explained the situation.... and Toby started to have a look....well as he pulled at the cable...
you wont believe this.... and you lot stop laughing....
The top part of the cable came away in his hand...
it had somehow come loose at the top....which explains why nothing was a happening thing at the bottom...

Now I never even spotted it loose at the top...

So Toby (bless his heart) fixed it all for me.. he had to even take off the main light to get to it... :done:

So a huge thanks to Henderson Bikes. :spudwave:
