My parents have a spa in their house back in NZ, so expensive with power and stuff.
They are fun for the first month or so, then you never use them. The one time I said I was about to have one they informed me it had been turned off for a few months. hmmm

Spa's are awesome, wish I had one. Yes they cost roughly $1 to $1.50 a day once you warm them up. Go to a place that sells them, best way to do it. Should be able to get something with 15-20 jets and room for 4 for about $6-9k. Or if you want to spend $15k you can get all the bells and whistles. Depends on how much you want to use it, the space you have for it etc.

Leisureite, NZ made and they use good quality electronics and parts. We have one of theirs and it hasn't let us down in 2 1/2 years so far. Be prepared for the cost though, the ads saying "$1 a day" are a load of crap. Hard to say exactly with ours as we got it at the same time we bought the house but I'd say more like $2.50 a day in power then you have to add the chemicals on top of that. We use Spa Poppits chemicals which are dead easy to use and odourless, no chlorine smell. It will take a bit of time to intially get your water balance sorted but after that it's easy.

You can get a spa from $4000 and up. These are 'portable' so you set them up yourself. A mate of mine has one he got off TradeMe and set it up with solar heating as an assist. No pump needed as it thermo-cycles. Do you have a bank which you could place a solar panel down?

I think BBQ Factory has spas too. Can't think of the other place. Wife and I looked at them a couple of years ago. Never did anything further as every time she brought the subject up I'd just say 'no' and nothing more.

ours is in a sort of garden setting off the back verandah but still private and undercover ..... handy to the bathroom but not 'inside' ..... so we have the best of both worlds

We don't use ours. Come and rip it out.

Seriously (actually, I was sorta serious), the thing to do is to check out the energy requirements of potential candidates. Ours takes all day (well... nearly 5 hours) to heat up from cold, so it's expensive to run. It also has a humungous heater and pump, connected to a separate meter on the powerbox, so we know Eggs Zachary how much it costs to run.

Our neighbours used to use theirs literally EVERY day (it was in their back deck, with a view from it to the harbour), so although it cost them maybe $20-$25 or summat to run a month, they weren't heating it from cold. Plus it's a lot smaller'n ours.

The plus of ours is it's under the house (well.. under the first level, but level with the bedroom level) and so it's private, has speakers set up so you can listen to music, get pissed, get waterlogged, go wild...

Must resurrect it sometime....

i was looking at them aswell awhile ago and the best value spa was made by leisurerite called the aztec capri.
around 7k but they are always cheaper at the fieldays and think they were around 6k .
i have 2 lots of friends who have one and one is a budget one at 4k and the others spent 7k and thye dearer one was far superior and would well be worth the extra cash if you could afford.
but in saying that the cheaper one is still a good spa its just when i compared them both.
and they have both had theirs for over 3 years and still use them at least 5 times a week.
and one friend turns their one off for couple months in summer.
apart from that they are running all year round.
they both said they cost around 40 dollars a month to run minus chemicals.
you can get an ozone system which is meant to let you run less chemicals.

And there is this one that was construction on-site. Total cost - free. Wood from a timber mill, vinyl from an upholsterer, boiler from a gasfitter. All motorcyclists.

Ours is a Maax Spa that came with the house (originally about $13k I think). 40 something jets and great for relieving the discomfort of a stuffed knee under the stars with a bit of Floyd and a JD.

Was a bit greedy on electricity as it had been running on demand 24 hours controlled by the thermostat. We've since put it on a timer which sets it running at about 5.00pm and off at 11.00pm - time enough to bring it back up to heat (adjust for seasons) and then off after use.

We also have opted for a colloidal silver treatment system (Simple Silver / BioSure), rather than chlorine, which costs about $400 once a year but is otherwise a great hassle free system with no having to chase pH levels and the like. Worth checking out.

Hire a plug in one for a month or two first.
Note elec consumption and cleaning etc, then buy if you still want one.
Just a thought.

Good point, been there done that. Twaz great for parties and the kids had a ball growing up with one but over the years I had to fit a new blower, new pump and re-tile the outside edges. We ripped out the electric heater and made up a stainless steel wood burner with a copper coil inside it (it's not what you know) for heating, worked a treat, cost sfa to run then. However, the novelty eventually wore off and maintenance got a bit tedious.

Ok if you've got the tenacity, bloody relaxing, great on a cool starlit night, bottle of your favourite poison, soothing music, your favourite woman (or the missus).

Romantic rubbish, forget it.

Spend your money on a large indoor Spa bath.

Reasoning:

1. Fresh water every time you fill it = no maintenance, no chemicals, no worries.
2. Doesn't consume power when not in use.
3. Can be filled with hot water and ready for use in 20 minutes.
4. Kids can't fall in and drown when you're not around.
5. If installed properly, will add value to your house.

Pretty much! We've had our Hot Spring spa for over five years and it's still good. You should be able to get one for around $6k maybe cheaper on special. Hot Spring reckoned about $4-$5 a week to run and I think that's about right.

dont forget it will need to be fenced as if it was a swimming pool and the lockable lids arnt deemed to be enough of a deterrent to kids getting in and drowning

Home Spas are great, Saunas too.

I bought a spa really cheap off of a workmate a few years back.

Paid $400

He was in a bit of a hurry to sell too.

Apparently if it wasnt gone that day then his Mrs was packing up his shit and chucking it out on the street along with his sorry arse.

Poor Bastard mumbled something about him, some empty wine bottles, the 25 year old blonde next door, accidentally lost togs and his Mrs coming home from work early.... :shit: :gob:

Anyways it was great for us in the winter hot and better in the summer cold.

Kids used it everyday.

Mum loved it after training runs.

I nearly drowned in it late one night after work when I fell asleep and floated into the middle. I woke up when the water came over my face but didn't know which way was up for a minute there, bloody bubbles going everywhere.

Sold it when we moved house and always ment to buy another.

Definately worth spending the $20-$40 per month to run it.

I've always wondered, is that cost based on using the thing once a year?

The water needs replacing at least once a year so you're going to need to heat the 1000 litres+ of replacement water from cold to spa temperature (37 degrees +/-) so expect a nasty jump in the power bill for that.

We minimise that by turning up the hot water cylinder thermostat to 80 degrees or so and then emptying it into the spa a couple of times (alternated with cold) using a hose from the washing machine taps. I figure that's cheaper than running the spa heater (and circulating pump), for almost 2 days like the first time we did it before wiseing up:doh:
Note: cylinder thermostat down again after.

$1-00 to $1-50 a day NOT! After getting ours from trademe only just under 2yrs old (an aztec capri) I think that only a buck 50 a day is way out of wack with todays power prices, and your forgetting about water (if you pay for it like aucklanders) and testing kits, chemical's etc. We still use ours because of partner and her back prob's quite a bit but if your not into having a bath I could see how you'd stop using it. Reason people sold it to us was because it was only used maybe 10 or 12 times the whole time they had it. Its great on a cold night after a hard day at work. It cost us $5000 and it was near new. they were $8000 at the time we got it.
