View Full Version : Race ECU - '08 ZX10R

Dear Auntie,
I'm a gnats cock away from picking up my blissfully horny new ZX10R and have a wee question for ye.
I have purchased a race ECU: can I fit it to the bike while running in, or should I put a few kays on the clock and then install it?
Also, I have an aftermarket muffler for the Ninja as well - can I get rid of the butt-ugly tea kettle Kawasaki have slapped on the bike also before running in?
Any answers or idle chit-chat would be kindly appreciated :2thumbsup

Heehee, thanks for posting so late so I can possibly (if I type fast enough!) be the first to put the Pope amongst the gay pride parade.
"Running it in" is a load of shite! (there, subtle enough for ya?!)
The thing has been redlined/dyno tested by the factory so it's quite capable of operating to it's maximum as soon as you get your sticky mits on it. Just ride it home, change the oil as soon as you get there (who knows what casting dags, contaminants have been liberated during first operation) and enjoy.
The bike shop may use the aftermarket goodies as an excuse (that's all it is) to get out of any warranty claims but otherwise just bolt 'em on and smile away.
Let the flame war commence:corn:

Bloody show off! I want one, I do agree with slowpoke, re running in and factory redlining but wouldn't the casting dags he speaks of be liberated upon redlining at the factory??
Race ECU = no indicators brake lights??
Bloody fancy peice of kit there BBM Im green??? with envy
Come on what colour?

Yep, that's what I mean. I can't see them changing the oil between running it up in the factory and selling it off the shop floor but I could be wrong.

Slowpoke; New bikes aren't shipped from Japan full of oil I'll tell you that for free.
But yeah. I dont know much about running bike's in. I have only done my
600RR and it use's oil so I think I did something wrong. Too many conflicting opinion's about running bikes in for me to comprehend. Its far to easy not/to kane it straight out of the box
Goodluck BBM My guess wack your parts on and away.
Did you get your exhaust and ECU as a package? are they compatable?. If not, Who will tune it for ya? Are you going to do a base run before you take the stock parts off?

Hey man, this is by no means gossiple, but after discussions with Kawasaki technical etc after my recent rebuild, I would reccomend the following ,
1. leave the bike stock for the running in. one of the things the race ecu does is give you an extra 1500 rpm over rev.
2. run in on GOOD mineral oil
3. run the bike up to temp and let it cool right down. this will most likely have been done at the shop during PD
4. take it out for a session (15-30 mins) driving it through the rev range up to about 3/4 rpm. then let it cool right down
5. another session using the full rev range, (but dont sit on the rev limiter)
6. Change the oil and filter (use mineral oil again) and ride it normally till the 1000 ks mark.
7. change oil and filter again for the good stuff
8. dyno bike for base run, bolt on aftermarket goodies, dyno again
9. learn to ride :done:

nice choice in bike mate:2thumbsup. not sure about the whole running in thing with the race ecu, might be better to wait till after your first service? i'd be keen to know how the bike goes once you have fitted the new ecu tho. cheer's

PS: I hope you got the tuning cable for the race ECU as well, they come seperate and are an extra $300 ish notes.
you cant set it up without it and none of the dyno tuners in Aucks has one

Race ecu needs to be tuned dont run it in on race ecu, let me know if you need a tuning cable and make sure you have the new harness for the ecu cause it wont run without the small race harness.
Best guy to tune it would be brett roberts cause most dynojet tuners will struggle...
Do you have the software as well?

Slowpoke; New bikes aren't shipped from Japan full of oil I'll tell you that for free.
Slowpoke: Sorry dude - in this particular instance you are WRONG with a capital W
All Kawasakis, except two stroke Jet Ski's are shipped from factory "Oil filled" & have been for bloody years...
BIGBOSSMAN:
Archer W.C's advice is well worth following with regard to the run in procedure... (Especially the MINERAL OIL bit - my personal recommendation would be to use mineral oil right through to around 2.5k k's & then if you really want to, go to a semi synthetic... Unless your racing the bike, full synthetics are simply not required)
Just a little word to the wise out there - the Kawasaki Diagnostic software has the facility to log engine rpm used during the "Run In" period
If you want to avoid any possible issues with future warranty claims - its pretty bloody simple, do it by the book...
Bolt all your goodies on once the first service has been done & get the bike on a dyno to be base mapped & set up after that...
I can personally recommend Brett Roberts also - top bloke
It would also pay to check with the Dealer that any accessories fitted will not void your warranty because if it can be proved that the fitment of said accessories was the cause of any Warranty related problem, you are on your own - the Distributor can & will reject your warranty claim
Cheers

by "bloody years" do you mean 2? because all the 06 zx6's and zx10's they had at shaws in whangarei were dry as a nun's cunt.
Baycity are sending their 10's out the door with aftermarket exhausts already fitted, so i cant see a problem with warrenty etc

You've misread the post mate, that's exactly what I thought would be happening.....

Or you like the idea of extended service intervals
So what's the reasoning behind the elaborate run in procedure? Given that bikes are dyno'd before leaving the factory why avoid something that has already been done? With bearings running on an oil wedge not metal on metal the only bedding process of note is the piston rings. Given that your average bike these days is designed to pull over 10,000 revs per minute (in many cases much more) wouldn't any bedding process happens in minutes not hours?

Hey thanks everybody for your pearls of wisdom (even you Brian ya big pansy!).
I'll keep the original ECU and shit-can on my new GREEN ZX10R until 1000K then tear them off as soon as I can. This is gonna be good...

Yep, ha ha another bloody Kwaka - my 2nd one! Dunno why, the last 10 was such a blinder I'm eager for more of the same but an updated package. I think like most of the litre bikes these days it looks a bit poo as standard, but it'll come to life with a bit of bling. We gotta do Hampton Downs next year bro YEE HAA!!:banana:

Damn right Shane, it's not that far away either - s'posed to open in Feb next year.
I'll check on the oil situation, a full tank of gas wouldn't go amiss as well!
