That would be great!!!! The more girls the better! I hope you both can make it.
I ride a black 2007 200 sporting a straight pipe with a '70s Supertrap, a richened main jet & a modified air box. Naturally the DR has decent bark busters fitted for offroad trail riding (much needed!), knobbly's & a 13 tooth front sprocket I can put on at anytime but best still, the ugly farm rear guard & tail light is gone! Replaced by a black MX guard & small tail light & indicators fitted to an easily detachable num plate bracket. No need to remove the seat now to get them off! Finally the kids thought I must have "racing
numbers" so they chose Bert Munro's '35'! All work done by Tony W & XRJohnny. THANKS GUYS !!!!!!!:2thumbsup

Tony W got a piece of pipe for me, bent it & made a bracket to connect it to the frame. The straight pipe clamps into the header (hope that's the right terminology!) pipe! Mines a nice 'copper' one! XRJohnny had the mint condition Supertrap floating around in his garage. Together not only does the 200 look & sound HOT!!, its lighter for me to pick up without its heavy, restrictive, ugly muffler & is sooooo punchy now!!!!! Cost to me 30 Steinies for the boys! I'll let Tony W take over from me with the finer details..........
Wot year is your partner's DR 200 MOTOXNUT??

Its a yellow 2004 model but has only done 900 mls. Suzuki have made no changes to the model since then other than graphics and colours.
Might try and pick up an aftermarket can/muffler and get the pipe made up to suit like you did. You have got me keen now that i know it will make a difference to the power.

Yeah. I'm actually having a rethink on the second leg. I have distance to petrol concerns. The Porangahau gas closes midday, and there is really nothing 'til Ypuk. Will realistically turn left at COONOOR go along Towai Rd to WAIONE,

I'm 0 for 2 for getting stuck on a beach, keen to try best outa five tho (So long as at least 3 riders are behind me!!)

Yeah. I'm actually having a rethink on the second leg. I have distance to petrol concerns. The Porangahau gas closes midday, and there is really nothing 'til Ypuk. Will realistically turn left at COONOOR go along Towai Rd to WAIONE,
then SH52 to Tahuokaretu Rd...etc. Could you post this also?
Thanks for your help.

Get a KTM Adventure brother, 28litre tank, 500km no worries:yes:

Man, they pack them in like sardines over there. Wayyyy too many people for this country boy.

You know what they say about asian drivers. I can see where they get there driving skills now. There is only one road rule I could see - the biggest vehicle gets right of way. Mopeds and pedestrians don't stand a chance.

Thousands of scooters ripping around, three up, no helmets, with the lights off at night (to save petrol). Unreal.

Just over a grand NZD....bloody good price and the sound is nothing less than spectacular even with the inserts in. A little more weight then the Akra's but half the price. I am very happy with them and they look better than the Akra's also.

Remember to bring your earmuffs to the dusty as you will need em!

Nice - that's a pretty good price on a pair of cans, cant wait to hear it. A 950/990 on song with nice cans is the perfect symphony.

Tenzing is all good. Suspension has made a huge improvement (the old stuff was rooted). Foam air filters seem to work great (have a look in Tenzings thread (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=78675)). Working on luggage at the moment. Really need to do some more riding and give things a bit more of a work out. Only done 1000kms so far. The Michy Deserts don't appear to like SI high country gravel roads though - El has given his a pretty good hiding in one ride about 220km long - lots of cuts and a couple of chunks missing.

Ryan thats odd about the Michies as they are more suited to the harder surfaces and not great in mud!!!!!! The 2 I have had on the back have been great, 10k out of the one on John's bike and I have done about 5k on the one on the 950 and should get one more decent ride out of it yet. Don't forget they are nearly a full knob and will be prone to chunking on the hard stuff compaired to a TKC or MT21.

By the way can you PM me WW's address in NN for the barby on the Friday, I'm still trying to sort accomodation as I will have a shit load of stuff with me as I will be on my way home from holiday with the kids and don't want some young bogans pinching it.

Greetings everyone !

Well, it's less than two weeks away until the ride begins and places are filling fast ! There are 21 people registered so far with rumours of at least half a
dozen locals and mates joining in as well. If you have not made up your mind whether to join in yet, please do, especially if you have never visited H.B.

Many are staying at the Top Ten Holiday Park here in Hastings and this is where the ride will start from, then end, approx. 12 hours and 600 km later !

The Ladies' ride will be led by Muzza DL and his lady, and will leave after the
main bunch departs. It will follow the same route, but travel independently
at a gentler pace.

After the ride there will be a BBQ and beers ready as soon as we get back to the Holiday Park.
I will be phoning ahead to notify the chefs of our arrival time.
Now as far as drinks go, I could buy beer and then sell it for $1-$2 a can.
You would have to let me know what flavours you require, or do you just want BYO? Please post your preferences.

Food will be, steak, sausages, cooked by DR girl's husband, " DR bloke "
Salads etc prepared by my Mrs, " Jackie W ". Also some fancy potato dish prepared by the ever versatile DR girl !
There will be an extremely minimal charge of $10. If I could please collect this off you before we leave on Saturday morning, it would help greatly in determining food quantity.

Breakfasts and other meals will be up to the individual, as we are in the city
and there are plenty of options.

Can't think of anything else at the moment. Looking forward to catching up
with visitors on the Friday, and the the even keener ones on the Thursday !

If you require any further information or want to comment, please post on
this thread.

Cheers

Tony W
24th October 2008, 08:18
:)..Hi folks.
Just an update to give you some more details.

Assembly point on Sat morning will outside the front gate of the Top 10 Holiday Park in Windsor Ave at around 7.30 am.

I will lead us away at 8 am and will be wearing the fluoro yellow Hi-Viz vest.

(XR) Johnny, DRZ 250, will be riding as sweep and will have a red/orange vest.

Murray will take care of the ladies.

There will be 45 mins of Tarmac before we hit the gravel. First stop, after approx 2 hours, will be at Porangahau for those wanting petrol.

We'll then head for Dannevirke arriving in approx another 2 hours.
This will be a lunch and gas stop for 30 mins.

After lunch we meet up at the BP at the southern end of the town's main street.

From there we head S/E and 2-3 hours later end up at Pongaroa where petrol will be available. There is also a shop, but if you must eat, don't order coffees or take-aways ! ...I did on our scoping ride, and held up the boys for 40 MINS !!!:weep:

From there we meander northwards and 2-3 hours later end up back in Hastings.:2thumbsup
(petrol at Waipukurau)

You can then take a well deserved rest and recreation break !

For those who are unfamiliar, we will be using the "cornerman" system for navigation on the ride. This is a very straightforward and effective way of following the route without having to refer to a map or notes along the way.

As we come up to an intersection, for example, the ride leader will ask the rider who is next behind him, to stop at that place and let the other riders following know which way they should head.
This Cornerman waits there until the sweep catches up.
He can then head off at his own pace to rejoin the group.

Hey Bart.

How has the rain been down your way lately ?
I was just thinking of your gnarly little offroad section we scoped.
On the day it might be a good idea if you and one other, rode down Manuhara Rd and across to Waihi Valley Rd where we would meet up with you. You could then let us know the condition of the track you had just ridden, and we could make a call on the suitability of that section for the day.

Waihi Falls may eventuate only if we have time, as I'm sure that detour would add 45 minutes or so.

Motoxnut & I are staying at the Top 10 holiday park on Friday & Saturday nites & we are keen to join you for a drink :apint:

Clint640 and I will be staying at the holiday park on Friday and Saturday nights as well :apint:
I'll have to figure out how I can pack my fuel bottles, and some red wine this time.

It would be ideal if everyone can have gas onboard for 300km.

Is that for the ladies ride as well? We haven't fitted my new tank yet, but I should get a bit over 300kms if I carry my fuel bottles.

Hey Clint, if you are still planning to head back this way i would be keen to tag along ( weather permitting )

Yep, be good to have you along, still planning on coming back through there if time & weather permit - although being a shortcut of sorts I don't think it will take too much longer than the main roads to my place.
I came through the Waipunga, Minginui, then on past Murupara to Rotorua the other day while coming back from Napier & it only took 20 min longer than going through Taupo.

Cheers
Clint

Nah you should be all right.
Gas at Porangahau @120km, then gas @ Dannevirke @+120km.
What is your fuel capacity and range by the way?

What type of vehicle were you on/in ?

MXNUT fuel is available @ Tutira on the Sunday, so you should be able to get through to Murupara on a tank from there...?
BTW what is your range etc ?

The tank is 9 litres, my two fuel bottles take it to 12 litres. Fuel economy varies massively, depending on if I'm riding at highway speeds, or pootling on gravel, but 12 litres should get me 260-350 kms.

Range is 175 Kms on tank when ridden hard and around another 70 ks with extra fuel I carry in container.

That was on the KTM, maintaining a, er, 'steady' pace  & I do know that road pretty well now.

Metvuw forecast is looking OK, maybe a shower or 2 Sat evening but fine otherwise, Metservice OTOH say both Sat & Sun will be arse, here's hoping Metvuw are right!

Fuel sorted at Pongaroa for between 2 and 3 pm. Might want to bring cash please. Could eftpos at shop, but folding stuff may be a safer bet.

The shit weather is supposed to stay closer to the ranges, as it's coming more from the west, so I'm picking we'll be OK. Just wrap up warm.:cold:
Can get windy out there in a westerly.

:first: What an awesome weekend, well done TONY W .:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

Thanks also to XR JOHNNY for keeping track of us all as tail end charlie - BART, for the southern roads with real local knowledge - MUZZA DL, for taking care of the ladies - DR GIRL, DR BLOKE & JACKIE W, for the excellent BBQ and CLINT640 for not getting us lost in the KAINGAROA forest on sunday.

I clocked up 470 kms on Saturday and 420 on Sunday, and got back to Ham at 6.15pm a very tired but happy camper.

Highlight for me was stopping the top of the mountain just before Dannevirke( what was it called Tony W ) where the wind was so strong we struggled to stand up and i could not get back on my bike, much to the amusement of CARY.
The veiws were amazing.

Will post some pics later.

As above, another great weekend and every road surface you could think of, and good to hear it wasn't just me having trouble stopping the rear spinning up on some of it :blip:

OK guys, looks like you've got most photos covered. I'll just throw a few random snaps on.

First couple are at windy Coonoor, on the top of the Puketoi range (Towai Road). Amazing how quickly that wind came up. Place will be covered in windmills in a couple of years. Bastards.

Hi everyone what a great weekend and good company. A big thank you to Murray (aka Muzza DL) for looking after me & making my first Adventure Ride a fantastic experience, also to Sherpa Rosie for looking out for me. Thanks Tony for arranging the weekend and all the helpers for the excellent spread. PS: Robyn glad your ride went well, heard your throttle was smokin. Look forward to meeting you all again.

Thanks Fay,yes there were times on the road when the 200 had no more to give. Tapped out max at 105kph!!! A few more cc's would be handy. Was great meeting you. You were awesome! A big undertaking for a learner, especially on the gravel. Keep it up & I look forward to more rides together on our trusy DR200's!

WOW What a day! Great to meet you all!

Thanks to BT (Big Tony) for his exceptional local road knowledge & his perfect execution on the day! :calm:

XRJOHNNY(our sweeper ) for not minding my slower pace when he can ride like a demon :headbang:himself! Also........ it was great knowing he was there to scrape me off the road if need be. (Luckily NOT !!!)

Denniso. Thank you so much for letting me, & trusting me on your DR 650. All I can say is “Amazing “! The power of a larger bike, makes you realise how hard you have to push the smaller ones!! I still had pins & needles in my left thumb on Sunday (Vibration and hanging on for HELL in the heavy gravel). Those racing slicks were something else! Held the road SO WELL but wouldn’t be game to take them off road like you, YOU MADE THEM SING!!!:2guns:

Andrew (Javahead). What can I say, other then when you passed me standing up on the footpegs of your 1150 Adv with its arse hanging out, you were awesome! As I said on the ride ’YOU LOOKED SO GOOD FROM BEHIND’.:moon:

Hugo (DRZ 650). Anyone who wears MX boots and pants is cool :blip:in my books. Another trail riding nut like me! You rode so well, thanks for your enthusiastic comments re my riding of the dirt section. The only part I actually over took anyone !!!

MOTOXNUT, thanks for taking photos of us tail enders- great shots!

The awesome local input for C.H.B from Bart, loved that dirt section!!!

Many thanks Cary for your supportive post re my little DR200 doing the ride.

I think Bernard (Bikeflite) was our oldest and more then likely our fittest rider! After a recent Epic Trail Ride with Johnny & myself he spent the next whole day snow skiing! Two days later he did a 35k mountain bike ride, and NB he goes ‘hard out’ in all three!:sweatdrop

If I ever did a ‘Long Way Around’ or ‘ Long Way Down’, this is the guy I would have to take with me. Miles our very own Macgyver! Amazing what you can do with a piece of wire!

Jeanie it was lovely to meet you, and so good to see a girl on a big bike (XF 650). Rosie, you had a huge ride just to get here and back on your trusty 250 Sherpa. :ride:A real dedicated rider! And SuziGirl again an awesome effort!

Clint 640 for your wonderful H Bay Adv report on Advrider. Great pics!

For all those I haven’t personally mentioned, you must have been SO fast because I never saw you except on breaks. I'll be checking you out on future rides!:msn-wink:

Thanks to my Tony, who only read a few days before (from BT’s POSTING) that he was on marination and BBQ duties, and Jackie W for purchasing all the fresh produce and beer while we were all out having fun. We couldn’t have done it with out you guys.:drinknsin

....…..A GREAT DAY AND A GREAT GROUP OF RIDERS.........!!!!!! :grouphug:

Maybe a couple of us could ride / or trailer our bikes down to your family farm & make a day of it ???? (HINT, HINT) :woohoo:

Spent Sun am riding all over Mt Erin Station, up to the transmission tower & right down to the Tukituki River with a couple of mates. CRF 230 & GasGas 250. Views spectacular!!! A quick sprocket change at home & off with tail light, no plate, bk indicators there, & off...............
