View Full Version : The biggest Wellington Club ride of the year, Feb 27th

On Febuary the 27th, the Wellington Harley Owners Group is having a poker run. "Who cares?" you ask?
The difference with this run (and I've never heard of it before) is that all motorcyclists are welcome!
If you've never done a Poker Run before, you're missing out. Huge fun, I promise.
It costs $10 per hand and this includes a BBQ lunch after the event. Pillions are also expected to buy a hand.
There's $2500 worth of prizes to be won for best/worst hands and spot prizes along the way. The theme (if you want to dress up) is rags to riches.
Meeting point is Wellington Motorcycles, 12 Kent Tce at 9:30am, Sunday the 27th of Feb.
I wanna see Kent Tce lined with bikes. I'll be riding my Suzuki and wearing my Kiwibiker T-shirt with pride so let's make this an awesome event.
Jimbo can vouch for how well run these HOG events are and,
ALL BIKES WELCOME AND ENCOURAGED!
edit: A poker run is a predetermined but secret route with various checkpoints, at each of which you receive another card for your "hand". At each checkpoint you'll receive a clue as to the location of the next. It's not a race, just a chance to have a good time with a heap of other bikers. End of the day, best hand wins.

Perhaps an explanation of what a poker run is, where is it going, what do you do etc might be off benefit to newer members.....?

OK.
I was at the committee meeting last night and this thing is going to be HUGE! Big BBQ and drinks, all on the HOG chapter. What a great bunch! If you don't buy a hand, you'll be asked to pay for your meal but then why would you do a poker run?
It's only two weeks away folks so make sure you put in on the calendar.
It is definitely open to ALL BIKES. I'll be there on the Gixxer, looking just as cool as ever.
So, whos coming?! Show of hands?

Argh - it would be rude and churish to refuse such a kind and generous offer methinks... Beside I'm sure there is at least one HD owner in Wellie that has NOT told me my motor is mounted sideways.... (they do like their jolly little japes)

My\bikes combined age is 74 so no, you old buggers can't come along, it's just for us young un's... :niceone: Oh go on then, may as well.
We will be there provided it is not pissing with rain as I will have fitted a new tyre and a new seat and I really can't be arsed falling off or getting wet...
Weather report is decidedly average at the moment but we all know what thats worth in real life. So... If it's a average sort of a day Vicki and I will be there to see how the other half live and to see how good we are at Poker...

White trash

No. You pay $10 at the start for your first card, then you collect a 4 more cards at checkpoints along the way.
$10 is the total cost.

A full afternoon triming and gently forcing the new seat into place and we have a runner... Bastard bloody stupid motorbike...
Weather looks naff... Is it on rain or shine or is there a rain date. I have a new rear tyre (slippery) and don't feel the need to risk death and get all wet just for a cheap lunch.

Same. I won't be going out tomorrow. I also have a new tyre (well, it's scrubbed in - a ride to Napier and back today took care of that!) but mostly I need to get paid and I'm tired :spudwhat:

So where was everyone ????
Despite how it looked the weather was very good for the entire trip.
Nice crowd at the starting point. NOTE: must buy a black leather jacket to wear when I'm on a Harley ride. Wearing a red/black textile jacket does make you stand out somewhat.
First checkpoint was the piecock hill lookout. Very nice ride up except for the major puncture I got on my 1 day old rear tyre !!! Big thanks to Geoff for not only giving me his repair kit but for also doing all the work !!!
From there to the shannon checkpoint. Traffic was held up big time before Otaki due to a chemical spill earlier that morning. The bikes got through but I wouldn't fancy being in a car.
Shannon to Foxton and next checkpoint at the Motorcycle museum on SH1.
Then finish at Waikawa domain. Nice bunch of people, good food and no accidents.
Then head home with Deano to be stopped only a few hundred metres from SH2 when an accident has blocked the road just below the Haywards power station. Police advise that they need 30-60 minutes to photo and document the accident so no choice but to turn around and take the long way home.
All in all a good day.
Photo's to follow.....

Yes my ride called me at 7.30 and we decided that it was too wet & windy. Next time and when I have my own bike back *sigh*
It couldn't possibly have had anything to do with the fact that I had got to bed at 3am that morning though.

Yes, it was generally a pretty well organised event and we were well chuffed to be invited. Lotsa fun.
One teeny suggestion. Put the organisers cell number on the lunch voucher so you can find youse guys should we get diverted. As we did... (sigh) Mostly my fault. I was getting a little worried about lunch with my diabetes. Not a good look getting nervy and riding a bike.
