assuming the bike you wanted was still being produced, and you were to buy a new bike, would it be 4 stroke or 2 stroke and which best describes your riding

My personal favorite is the modern 250 4 stroke, easy as to ride, mega traction and engine braking.
But thats not to say i dont like the two stroke, would rather just ride a four, and leave the strokers to the pros.
Will be gutted to see the 2t phased out

As 4stroke stated got love the pure grunt of the 450/4s had a few 250/s just not the same not that they were bad bike lots a trick bits on them. so far the 450 is just fine straight out of the box.

Always been a 2T man myself.
Ride my 250 4 stroke so much faster than my 250 two stroke but it's not the same buzz. I love the feeling of drifting it out on a 2T, the sound and the smell is to die for. 4T's are way more rideable but I ride to have fun not to be the fastest out there. If I was racing it'd be on a thumper but i'm not hence the 2T

2t's were awesome in there day but 4t's have come so far & injection/electronics are advancing at a rapid pace that there will be even more power to come, although the way diesels are advancing and emission's etc from petrol 4t's we all may be riding them soon !!!

Uugghhh! Every time I get on a 4T or even try to roll one on to the trailer, they are sooooo heavy. They sound like a rattly can of the most rattly stuff you can get. Crack the throttle and it is wait... wait... wait for it, we're gonna make some power soon... uh, too late!
I might be faster on a modern small-bore 4T but 4Ts are heavy, noisy & dull. Part of the reason I ride (and race) is for the fun of it. 2Ts are exciting and don't have the weight or maintenance penalty.

Interesting read.
I'm going to be upgrading from my 1983 XL250R (117kg) at some point this summer.
Really torn between a KDX200 and some 250 4T. Quite like the look of Yamaha's etc. Not sure on which model would suit me for trail riding only.

Get an old twin shock XR if you don't like maintenance :D
Fill it up at the start of the season and you're set.
I must say that after a 3-hour cross country I wouldn't mind my engine in a modern(ish) frame with actual suspension and brakes :crybaby:

I love my 2 stroke cause I can work on it. No doubt when I get a 4 stroke (cause there is no option) I'll just figure it out. The thing that really puts me off a 4 stroke is the cost of parts and servicing.

A 4 4 sure. They sure dont smell as good as a 2 tanger but they sound like the hounds from hell are approaching. A bit more rideable in crappy conditions too possibly...
It seems that now the manufacturers have taught them to rev out properly ther' all the go... A bit more high maint, but thats all part of the fun too.
In a perfect world though we would all have a mid eighties air cooled YZ490 primed in the shed, just to remind us of the days of serious power delivery...:niceone:

Get an old twin shock XR if you don't like maintenance :DIndeed, a late-model XR-R would be my preference. The potential maintenance $$$ in the WRF/CRF range scares me a little, but no doubt I will go for something like that eventually if it has to be a modern thing. It is the way forward. Sounds like they are getting to the point that they do hold together well long-term.

the four strokes arent that hi matainace, i done over 300 hours on my 02 crf450 really all it cost me was oil and filters. and a piston every hundred hours.

2Ts are exciting and don't have the weight or maintenance penalty.
I don't have anything against 2 strokes, have owned a few and enjoyed them. But the first ride i had in 01 on a 250f converted me. The bike was simply fun to ride, there was no going back from there.
I don't understand all this maintenance thing that people are reffering to. My last 250f had done 140 hours, and was pulled down by a good bike mechanic just for peace of mind and it was found that the internals were still in mint condition. Is this because i changed the oil after every second ride, and the air filter after each ride?? I don't know, but i never had any misfortune with any of the 4 strokes that i had owned. But then i wasn't a pro class rider ringing the f out of it either.
Personally i think an average weekend rider will be better off with a modern four stroke for the ease of riding and the primo grippy tracking that they give, never mind the awesome roost that comes of the back tyre!
I want another 250f

My XR250 ran for 25 years on the first piston and has got 4 years on the second.
Tyres every few seasons, oil once or twice a season and petrol every 3 or 4 races :D

18 hp should be enough for anyone :D
With the right rider on board it has embarrased more than a few modern bikes.
Dosn't have the grunt to get past but can stick right up their chuff and then after the race "Yeah mate the old 500 goes well" when they find it's a li'll 250 the look on their faces is priceless :Punk:

Isn't the CRF a unicam?
The '79 XR250 was a unicam 4 valve as well.
But the modern bikes do have more than double the HP and the piston itself is about 100th the weight.
I think with the modern 4st and 2st there is about the same amount of maintainance required. It's just with the 4st that maintainance takes a lot longer and can cost a lot more.

The 4T's are easy to ride fast (or slow), they sound great and they use less petrol. But . . .
I can't go past the way a touch of throttle on the 2T's snaps the front wheel up round your ears, and slides the arse out. At the same time. In 4th gear.
Sure that makes them hard to ride. But who gives a fuck? It's fun. If I wanted easy to ride I'd get a quad.
Edit: Ignore my avatar, I've not bought a quad just yet.

Well I guess that comes down to your own tastes, I think 4 $trokes $ound $hit where as a well muffled well jetted two stroke on the pipe sounds awesome.
I also think 4 $ylinder cars that go "piss churrr...." $ound $hit and I prefer the $ound of a V8. Perhaps it has more to do with volume.

Yeah I agree, factory spec 4T's sound mean and I still like the sound of a stock CRF BUT...
When I hear a nicely tuned 2T it's enough to make me wet my pants. To me it's the sound I grew up hearing and love it.

The difference for me is that the 2T's sound great when their at full noise, but the 4T's sound great all the time, revving, engine braking, even idling.
The problem with the 4T sound is how far it carries . . .

i wouldve said the opposite, the 250F's dont have enough power to do decent wheelies at speed, and the 450s seem to run out of revs too soon, nothing beats cracking a fat wheelie of my CR250R in 5th crusing past everyone on a straight section of a trail :Punk:

A company in the states are putting together new KX500's and CR500's and putting them into modern frames, they have had really good reviews and If I had the cash for a second bike I would defiantly consider bringing one in just as a play bike.
