[QUOTE=NordieBoy;1767774]Nah, there'll be others...

On Sunday I did the river crossing by the bridge on the Pelorus side without stopping to think about it and even had the confidance to stop half-way down and take a photo.

What river crossing is this? Right at the end by the main rd or further back towards the middle.

WW Do you reckon I'd get Gonzo around the laidback trailrides? Not after the extreme bits just the main trails. If so I'll keep an eye out for the next ones.
I did have the use of a trr250 until the owner rode it into a tree a couple of weeks ago:crybaby:

The bridge just past the end of the track proper (past the Mt Richmond turnoff).
You go around a left hander and it drops down and right over the bridge.
Instead of dropping down to the left go right on the outside of the corner...
Slowly :D

Apart from boggy sections an adv bike with MT21's should be fine.
Occasionally there are some little "challenging" bits but nothing as bad as that river crossing on the "B" sections.
Parents take kids on mini bikes around the "B" tracks sometimes.

What river crossing is this? Right at the end by the main rd or further back towards the middle. The one on the Maungatapu Road, only a few corners after the Track joins it. BusaJim's bridge :D

WW Do you reckon I'd get Gonzo around the laidback trailrides? Not after the extreme bits just the main trails. If so I'll keep an eye out for the next ones.In hindsight, that one, very definitely yes no problem. The main track was bone dry rocky gravel forestry roads, with some narrower bumpier connecting bits. This is not usually the case; rain & mud & steep hills, single track & paddocks are more usual, even on the main loop.

You could always phone the course setter leading up to the event. These things are designed somewhat as family days, so you should get an adv bike around the same stuff a young kid would.

Besides, the views on Sun were fantastic! The snow on the mountains, the sea, the Waiiti alley & Belgrove... made a nice adv day anyway.

What a fantastic day to go out riding. Sorry Nordieboy but got your text too late.

I went over to COllingwood with a couple of KTM retard friends & really put Gonzo into overdrive trying to keep up. (They were nice & waited).

I have never seen so many bikes on the road & 95% of them waved back - even cruisers:shit:

I have to say that it is worth a trip over there for the excellent coffee & unbelievably scrummy chocolate macaroon biscuit (they were even gluten free but that didn't put me off) at the cafe.

Heaps of MXers on the back of utes in Richmond. Did the trailride go well? Anyone else get out?
Has your bike got a green and silver tank ,if so I saw you go passed while I was having a lovely day [oh ya] at work in the workshop at Riwaka Garage, it is interesting watching all the bikes fang passed then returning later with some very impressive wheel stands from the corner down passed the garage and pub, though lucky nobody pulls out of the pisser or a wolliper doesnt come around the corner at the end of the straight, puts a bit of spice into the day for us.

We met up with Topo/Mrs Topo on the new(ish) KTM and Jatz/Mrs Jatz on the (not)new DR750 in Mapua and we were off.
First photo op was at the end of Apple Valley ready to head onto Old Coach Road...

Heading on to Old Coach Road and we were following an RX7 rally car which headed off in the direction we wanted to go at quite a high speed. We waited a bit to let it get ahead and reduce the dust.

We only did half of Old Coach Road and headed down Harley Road to the Highway and on to Rosedale and Orinoco where we saw a Moa on the hill...

Off down the Dovedale highway and over the Dove Hill (Topo just had to drop his pillion off at the summit and go back for a solo run) to Wakefield for a pizza dinner and watching the local nightlife through the window

Then back to the bikes and off to our Mot, Mapua and Nelson homes...

There is a few @ around NZ but not many. Started of as 650 (RD03 model) like UG has then enlarged the engine to 750 making the RD04. The RD03, RD04 and Tranny can pretty much share any body work, tank, etc. The frames are very similar. The RD07 came next which has some significant changes to the frame and was followed by the RD07a. The @ is a tougher better suspended, more powerful version of the Tranny (or the other way around not sure which actually cam first). No idea why Honda made two very similar bikes. Tranny started out as a 600 and was maxed out at 650.

The RD03 has the best suspension of the lot (supposedly) and the RD04 is very similar. For RD07/a the sus travel was shortened significantly hence the RD04 is thought of as the one to have as it has the better suspension with the 750 motor. Uber reliable - guy in ausi with 245,000kms on a RD04 (ATgreg on Advrider) with a single motor - carbie rebuilds and top end rebuilds excepted. About 65ish hp and pretty good torque - 3 valve heads.

Anyway enough dribble the Super Tenere (S10) is a better bike even if it has a weaker frame (when treated roughly with a full load), more prone to burning oil due to 5 valve head but has more mumbo (75hp) :D. Still not that common in NZ and due to the lack of marketing hype compared to the @, the S10 is often a lot cheaper in Europe. Though of as a very under rated bike in Europe.

I take dakar wins to be the definitive guide about these bikes  The race version of the @ won the dakar in 86, 87, 88 ,89 i.e. 4 years. The S10 race version won the dakar in 91, 92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 98 i.e. 7 years. Of course the homoligation bikes are noting like the dakar bikes :crybaby:

Cheers R

Not sure.
They don't log on weekends and it's really only a problem as in the first pic where there are loose logs on the road.
We'll have to check a bit closer to the time.

Just about any of the engineering shops will make you one at a price, would help if you make up a cardboard template tho.
Try Ballards Offroad website in Oz, look at Mostly Alloy Pages 35 on their catalogue, the've got one listed for KX250F, dunno if that'll fit yours - try emailing them. Price is $139 Aussie bucks. It may be cheaper/easier that bodging one up yourself....but then u don't have the satisfaction of the good ol' kiwi D.I.Y.

You going riding this weekend? I've got Sat/Sun morns free for a quick squirt on the DRZ if your'e keen to join.

Ok guys what went down over the weekend? Anyone go to the Street races?

I went to Blenheim on Sat via French Pass. What a very cool road - twisties galore. Poor Underground having to commute every day along there - gravel gravel gravel:Punk:

Today I went from Blen to Picton via Rarangi & Port Underwood. Again one of the best roads I've ridden. Lots of gravel, twisties & views & nearly no traffic.

Back via the Maunga that has had a good sprinkle of fresh gravel on the road. I thought I had fnally got the old gravel riding sussed until I nearly lost it a couple of times - back to nana mode:shit:

All in all some really cool riding & feel ready for the work week - ooops nope going to a mexican restaurant tomm with the girls kindy oh well maybe Wednesday I'll get to work...:2thumbsup

The coast was brilliant !After a shakey start aye Underground
Bit of rain on the way down but nothing to worry about,Maruia saddle was stunning as always, Greymouth was chocka, Racing was fast and furious, those motard guys are nuts, infact they all are, hats off to them.

Got sick of the racing so went looking for lake Hochstetter, took a wrong turn and rode down a dead end road, Reall nice piece of riding though.
Couldn't be arsed going back to Nelson crk to try and find our way to lake Hochstetter so went up to Big River instead.Took a wrong turn again and ended up on a rough goat track where we eventually got stopped by a large bog. Not a good place to be on a loaded Big with dusk only just around the corner.
Got robbed for accom. in Reefton, the place was booked out solid.
Then went for a gallop into Big River today

Stunning ride that. The mighty DR and little tenere thumping thier way through the westcoast bush, brilliant! (still fizzing @ the bung over that one)
Then home past a couple of accidents, poor biker on the Rahu(why don't road workers sweep up thier faarkin gravel or put out signs, wankers) hope the guys o.k.
Then past a nasty one just north of Murch, 3 cars, 1 crossed the centre line, nuff said.
Felt good to ride past about 1k of backed up traffic, then get escorted through the scene by a fireman while theyre still cutting people out of wrecks(got sworn at by some punters though)Hope those people are o.k. too.

BTW this is what I'm gunna do to the DR if I win lotto

We finally got past the Murch accident at about 5:30 after 2 hours of waiting. Counted 160 cars coming toward us after the accident site and estimate the same number before it. 600 odd vehicles backed up.
The helicopter took at least 1 person away.

Coming down the Spooners and on the last corner before Belgrove there were a couple of fire engines and 2 ambos with a bike off the side :( - no skid marks but fresh patches of seal and dustings of grit on the road going down the hill.

Sounds like Greymouth was a winner. Graeme (on the Superduke) had a coming together with the 675... so he reckons he is going to stick to the 'Berg for a while. Another convert to the dirty side, I'll keep twisting his arm to get it rego'd.

Sadly I was home most of the weekend. The rescue chopper was very busy on Sun & Mon. Maybe 6 trips inbound on Mon alone.

That race got red flagged and restarted at least twice.
We didn't see Graeme coming around after the first restart and wondered what happened.

James, I took the bait, and did Big River today. Shit, that place is adventure ridings' best kept secret (Not for long..:Punk:).
Well done Mrs Jatz for riding it, it's kinda bony in places, and the rivers had a bit of water running, just to make things interesting.
The big KTM gobbled up the bumps, but I had to treat the front with a little respect on the wet slushy leaf litter, after almost losing it at one stage, it wouldn't have been a good look, 20km into the bush trying to extract a KTM from down a bank by myself.
Did nearly 600km round trip today, Nelson - Murch - Reefton - Big River - Springs Junction - Maruia Track - Murch - then home. Good practice for the Dusty Butt, ya gotta love daylight saving!
Pics coming, gotta re-size them first.

Well tonight was a success.
I found the rear doesn't skip off rocks as much at 20psi as it did at 26psi and Jatz found his shock was doing the business and that if you want to save weight, sprocket teeth arn't the best area to start with.

Had a ride on the Big and it's a nice bike seated. My knees fit nicely in the tank sides and it feels a lot like my bike engine-wise but had to take it fairly easy. Standing I had to adopt the "horse riding" position which I didn't like so much :D

Well if your gonna be like that I wont tell you about the Cobb Dam Rd, Bird Rd or Totaranui Rd :bleh:

I'll see if I can get some time to put some more on over the weekend. The pressure is mounting for me to do some more on the web site. If nothing else I try and create some KML files. Dry Rd is a good gravel Rd with a river crossing (dont have to do and it is about 3/4 of the way south) and some awesome scenery but it is an in and out ride. Aorere is a rutted dirt track that is not so scenic but much more challenging.

Or out to the Tuamawiwiwiwi and onto the beach...

You lot are going to have to start sharing more. I have a vague suspicion about where the first one is but no idea about the rest. The Turimawiwi is the last ford, after the Anatori, on the way south to the Kahurangi lighthouse.

Google Earth shows the lighthouse and hut area, and Big River, quite well. The lighthouse itself is photographed from above, so is difficult to see, but casts a good shadow. If you lower the eye height and tilt the view for a fly-by, the seaside cliffs are presented well... but the lighthouse has no height!! :D

Anyone been into Lake Otuhie?Yes; my last few Easters (and likely many more to come) were spent camped at Sandhills Creek. There's caves in them thar hills! Kayaking up to the lake is possible when the creek has a good water level. The lake is on private property AFAIK and the farm roads are not worth the trouble of arranging access, especially compared to the road around Whanganui Inlet and the section from the Anatori to the Turimawiwi. Some rock climbing up towards the lake, routes mostly put up by cavers having a day off. See the back of the Paynes guide.

Was going to go back through Poriko but did maruia track for the first time, nice ride. Gave new tyre a good test on dry roads ,wet roads, gravel, mud ,thick snow, ice and rocks. Never fell off so it was a good choice. Couldn't believe the snow up there and I thought it was summer.

No......

But some tyre levers would come in handy.
My mtb ones are not up to the job as they're plastic and 10cm long.

I think the tyre walked on the rim andsplit the tube at the valve stem when I braked to a stop at a gate 5 or 6km down Upper Stanley Brook Road. It was fine on the way down but mushy turning and on the way back it was flat. I sat on the rear guard and rode it the 20-25km to the Spooners Lookout and walked it down the hill where Jenni picked me up in the van.

2 people stopped while I was pushing the bike. 1 to ask me for directions  and 1 to see if I was OK :2thumbsup

The front tyre is pristine with no signs of any holes and the heavy duty tube had a load of true-blue-tyre-goo.

I'm installing a rim-lock on Monday.

Weather and wife permitting I will be catching a ferry down to Picton on the 18th Nov and aiming to have lunch at Pelorus Bridge followed a blat through the Maungatapu and off to Richmond to meet Struan (XF650) before heading down via Porika to Murchison for Tuesday night.

Struan and I will then spend Wed Thurs Fri exploring the tracks in the Murchison/Reefton area most probably staying in Reefton so we don't have to carry much gear with us.

We were planning to hopefully include the following:
(all lifted from Ryans excellent site)
New Creek to Denniston - Maybe on Wed on way to Reefton)
Waitahu River
Big River
Napoleon Hill
Gows Creek
Lake Hochsetter
Mount Fox

We are interested any other (polite) suggestions you guys might have on other tracks or if any of the above are too knarly for the KLR and its pussy rider (Struan will be on the DT230)

Our plans are super loose and weather dependent but anyone is welcome to tag along.

Glad the site is working for you. The intent was for "out of towners" to find their way around. I'd suggest that you keep a close eye on the weather cause the Mackley river (New Creek to Denniston route) is pretty sensitive to rain and can easily get to high to cross. It the west coast tradition it does go down pretty fast as well though. Other thing is that I've not been into the Waitahu River and I understand it has some sections of large boulders that could be hard to ride.

Are we still meeting you in Hanmer - I take it that you are not getting that far south?

Well, nearly endoed the bike dropping into the creek at the start, it's been quite gutted out, so I stopped and chucked a few rocks into the hole I fell into, so others won't meet my (almost) fate.
Gonzo's rock is well and truly exposed as the beasty it is, a sure wheel dinger now. Avoid left hand side at all costs.

Yep, there's still some big (bigger!) holes in the usual places, the rock garden climb is very rocky, and up near the top, there's some massive guts in the track, where water has chanelled down and just ripped it all out. A 4WD up there wasn't even keen to cross them, so watch out.
Overall, it's bloody bony and would warn anyone crossing it over next couple of months to take care....no cellphone cover if you bust yourself or bike up.

I finally did the last pylon track I hadn't attempted.

Far more rutted out than last week (not as bad as it used to be though - you could lose a wheel in the ruts as opposed to a whole bike) and some slips and trees down but quite good coming back over from the far side in the dark.
It would have been even more fun if my highbeam was working...
Or my dip for that matter :(

Good test of my little 55w floodie though :D

Waiting for report...

:zzzz:

Just finished it. It is in technique clinic thread.

Went over the Maungatapu on Sat morning & there is a fair bit of damage from the rains. The first creek with the gonzo biting rock is pretty sweet now as the caretaker must have graded it back. Going up is ok until the top rock garden by the top bridge crazyfrog mentioned - it's bonier than a bony thing on halloween eve.

Further up the ruts open up & cross the track where we'd usually ride through so caution is needed.

The worse part I found was going down the pelorus side as the ruts run very deep & diagonally across the track leaving a narrow route to follow.

I came around a corner saw them & tried to slow down, however ended somehow accelerating, and in a moment (similar to a scene out of an Indiana Jones type movie where the rider on a donkey panics but the donkey just carries on regardless of it's rider's screams) I was safely parked with the cold sweats shaking my head looking back at what I'd come across.

OK its not really that bad just some commitment needed going up & caution going down.

I love riding aroun Nelson:hug:

Could have done with an expert of your calibre on sunday.....

Got bored, so went to check out access between Rocky river and Big Pokororo for possible inclusion in the "Tasman dust buster" TMNordieBoy :done:

Nah, Katie can handle the jandal, but the Dog Roota is soooo much lighter to chuck around.
I can't see a problem with Big adv bikes doing the Mangatapu at the mo', just take it a bit easier than ya would on a chook chaser, for the sake of bike and limbs. Go on, you know you want to do it......

Sorry fella's, I won't be there, I'll be elsewhere, (mmmm, French Pass) getting plenty of air thru my radiator so my bike won't overheat crawling along at 15kmph for an hour. Last time I did it on my Ducati, the thing got quite hot and I nearly roasted my clutch.:eek5:
I can hear 150 cooling fans whirring away up Trafalagr St already!!

Well, another fantastic weekend in the Marlborough Sounds riding out to Bulwer, stayed at Waitata Bay Lodge, can highly recommend it to other KB's, bike friendly bunch, nice digs and primo spot for relaxing and swimming.
Thanks to Underground for his local knowledge and his guidance around some sneaky side tracks, great fun on the chook chasers, might be a little knarly for bigger bikes. I'm a happy man.....
The Mangatapu has been cleaned up a bit, some of the bigger holes filled in, but still kinda rough in places. Had a couple of huge moments on bleeding tar on the way home from Okiwi Bay tho, gotta remind myself not to motard it on knobblies and take it easier on those real hot days. :shit: Yep, brown undies for sure, but the DRZ is very forgiving of me:yes:

Sunday 5:30ish this was at the start of the Maungatapu...

That sign was there Sat morn too, but we went thru anyway....I think it was because they had some machinery fixing the track on Friday, and possibly restricting access to 4WD's because of the poor condition earlier last week.
No signage re. road closure at the Pelorus end funnily enough.
Be brave Nordie and venture past the ropes....remember, this is a public road, not privately owned forestry block.
The closure could be argued, it's probably for the benefit of most who would struggle with the track conditions.
Anyway, the sign did say "temporarily closed"....where's the date?:whocares:

I went for a cruise up the maunga about 7pm Sun nite & the rope was down but the sign still there. Looked like a set of Dr650 MT21 prints over the rope on the ground. Anyway went 1/2 way up the hill & found it a lot better than last week. Beautiful long evenings...

I'm a starter after 3pm if an evening ride is on the cards, seeing we have so much daylight now. Where to? How bout' start with the Mangatapu, Rai Valley, tarseal to Duncan Bay, then ride the pylon track from Penzance to Elaine....back to Admiralty for you, home to Nelson for the rest of us. Any idea of condition of the pylon track?

Underground
9th December 2008, 20:01
Pylon track is too hard for the big bikes unless its real dry , topo and I tried it a while back unsucessfully , so we might have to break that one in with the 400's sometime .
Im thinking of heading to Nelson via Maunga in the morning with no particular agenda , but wouldnt mind including mt Arthur at some stage during the day as I havent been up there for ages .
Can organise to be in town round 3 tho for a ride and I will head home later under the cover of darkness

4-5 chances to get air ranging from just a little to "I can fly" type air.

The track was a bit rough in patches and my arms copped a real hammering.
Halfway up a hill is not the place you normally expect a boghole on the racing line but it kept everyone a little closer together.

Great fun :D

Got up to 68kph going down the back straight (inc big jump) and into a tight left/right 90 deg chicane.

The XR feels like it's got a dirty mainjet as it was only dropping the revs after 10 secs or so which made for some brown pants moments when you're relying on engine braking going into the corner :D

The fun races were:
pony express (2 people, 1 bike, alternating laps)

2-up race (2 people on the bike, 2 laps, swap rider after 1 lap - 2-up over jumps looks awesome :2thumbsup)

le-mans start (bungy start, run 100m up the hill, around the trailer, down the hill, jump on the bike and do 3 laps - running in full MX armour is... interesting)

egg race (2 eggs taped to your seat, 4 laps, 1st person across the line with no broken eggs wins)

adult/child race on childs bike (alternating laps)

Oh, and just to be even more politically incorrect we had a lolly scramble too :D

A good day out...

Oh and I rode over and back via the Dove Hill and Sunday Creek.

Took Mrs Padmei on the back of the bike out to Hopewell Backpackers in Kenepuru sounds this weekend & what a blast. Great windy roads, good food & interesting conversation with travellers.

Those who haven't been should pay the place a visit. Approx 2 1/2 - 3 hrs from Nelson with spectacular scenery.

15th December 2008, 19:12
Sounds good. Will put it on the must do list.
Had a play around the Pigeon forest for a couple of hours yesterday.
Was a bit naughty and gained access around the outside of a locked gate. Although, to be fair, I dont think I was the only mug who'd done this by the look of all the tyre tracks.
Anyway, because I went up and down about 20 different side tracks, I lost my bearings and couldn't find the same gate again (all I want for xmas is a GPS). Every other gate I came across was totally fenced off. By this stage I had visions of going onto reserve, then running out altogether.........didn't fancy camping out on a wet Sunday night!
Luckily, after 45 minutes of mild panic, I found it.
Cruised home over Dovedale, Jacobs, Moutere and reckon I made it to Shell Richmond just in time.

Felt really planted on the gravel. The front just went where it was pointed & the back was steady as a rock. On the tar seal there was a more noticeable amount of fork dive but was ok as we just took it easy.

I forgot to adjust the rear suspension to compensate for the slight increase of load so the footpegs were scraping around many of the thousand corners. Bec loved it & made noises about how to get her license so in a few years maybe Mrs Padmei will be out & about.

Gonzo isn't the ideal 2up bike -if we were to continue 2 uping a new F800GS or old Tiger would be on the cards. I just kept thinking back to 'Motorcycle Diaries' remembering Che & the chem wailing on the old Norton & hardened the golly up.

Over the summer we may ditch the kids again (know anyone wanting to buy a couple - good condition, little noisy from the gearboxes) & head West Coast way.

NordieBoy
16th December 2008, 06:56
Sometimes the pillion can be in just the right position to make the bike feel right in the gravel and sometimes it's a bit of a mission.

Another thing on Sunday...
I went back to the pit after playing with the nephews/neice and saw someone had dumped all my gear on the ground...
Then I saw the piece of wood I was using under my stand and realised my DR wasn't there...

Scurry over to the track and I hear a big bore bike on the limiter going up through the bog and see a roostertail of mud. A minute later it's over the hill and coming down toward the jump with both headlights blazing.

It jumps surprisingly well - heavily but well.

Wish I'd had the good camera out there :(

Shane says the back end is 10 times better with the 10W oil but now you can feel that the front end is the weak link. Emulators time.
Also the back brake is too easy to lock up but I think that's more a tyre thing and the exhaust gives it a good bottom/mid range compared to when he rode it over Patriarch.

He was throwing it around like a 250. Opposite lock through the corners bouncing off the limiter, sounding like a shotgun blast echoing around the hills on the closed throttle downhill bits, airborn off anything with the slightest bump and all this on a slippery track with a good MT21 front at 28psi and a 3/4 worn MT21 rear at 30psi. Proper race tyres :D

And it's still all in one piece.

Do you think they should have an adventure bike class??

Must have road legal tyres and no trailers, e.g. must be ridden to the track. It would be fun eh?
I think we would all see how good klrs really are.
