Just thought a specific thread may work.

Anything up this weekend?

I went up the Wairoa Gorge and did the Boundary Road/Ben Nevis loop yesterday. Scared myself a bit sh1tless when I headed back off a skid site and realised as I started down that I'd just chosen the downhill mountainbike track
Luckily it was short and had no big drop-offs or it could have been interesting :doctor:
I got right up into the pines to the start of the Ben Nevis Track where it's too steep to ride. Turning around I realised that I do not like riding down a steep hill with wet pineneedles...

Nothing up there the KLR couldn't do fine.
Probably a hour to 2 hours loop from Nelson.

Hoping to get out on the 2T this weekend, get some practice & acclimatisation for the 3-hour next weekend.

But will settle for an adv ride if I have to! :woohoo: Going back to Wairoa gorge area would be fine by me.

oh Nordie you're taunting me... Good call with the Nelson thread though - kind of ties a few things together.

With family commitments I am probably only gonna get a few hours on Sunday avo for a ride. I would be keen for then but if that's not convienient with others I might have another go over Maungatapu - theres a rock there that needs blowing up.

How about Sunday afternoon then for...

Nelson, Apple Valley Road (Coastal Highway), Old Coach Road, Rosedale Road, Dovedale Hill, Pig Valley, Wairoa Gorge, Boundary Road, Ben Nevis, Wairoa Gorge, Nelson...

2-3 hours(ish) and none as gnarly as the Maungatapu and only a couple of small fords on the Ben Nevis road.

But don't cut corners up there as you may find some nicely cut branches from a windfallen tree sticking out onto the track.

Snow down up the back of the Brook - Looking good for the Maungatapu :D

I can't make it Sunday, but have just come back from Mangatapu 9am this morn.
Heaps of snow, good fun, bit slippery up top, too much snow in my tyres which are getting low on tread anyway. Took some nice pics too. Will post in my albums later today.

Maungatapu is up the Maitai - Go straight up untill you hit gravel and then turn left at the cattle-stop there's a big sign at the caretakers overlooking the dam.
About 1hr each way.

At the moment it's a bit slippery with clay/ice/snow but not difficult if you take it easy. I went through on a road bike when it was a lot rougher.

Your KLX250 should eat the Mangatapu for breakfast...just consider your tyre pressure /or tread depth and you'll be fine. It's 42 kms from town to Pelorus, and as Nordie said, takes about an hour. Track rides better when it's had some rain, the Pelorus side gravel can be skitterish in the dry (if you're pushin it along a bit!). Get out there and enjoy!

I'd recommend doing the maungatapu the first time after a few dry days - in the wet it's a bit sippery on the rocks & clay but a grouse ride. i'd be keen to go over with you if you want company.

I may go over to the XC and take some photos but my bike isn't suited to XC yet (too twitchy, can't wait to get my longer forks) and I prefer MX on it.

It looks to be about 170km one way including the Maungatapu and Onamalutu.

Cheers for the info. Hard to commit to organised rideout times etc, as I'm pretty busy and just get out while I can. Hopefully, should be easier to plan rides closer to Xmas.
One question re tyre pressures - what are you guys running front and rear during these wet times? I'm running 22 psi both tyres, but find the front a bit 'skittery' on rocks/tight gravel. Maybe lower front to 18-odd?
Finally, this is the 1st new bike Ive owned since a new XR200 in 1982!
The recommended Kawi break-in says under 4000rpms for the first 800kms and under 6000rpms for the next 800. Personally, I find that a bit over the top (would drive me nuts). Ive currently done 200kms and took it pretty easy for the first 120kms. I'm now giving it plenty of variance on different terrain, going up and down all the gears, avoiding 'lugging' and varying rev range up to about 5,500 - 6,000 without thrashing it. Basically, sticking to the school of thought that you should break it in how you intend to ride it i.e don't baby it, dont redline/thrash it. Im also going to change filter/oil and 400-500kms, instead of waiting until the recommended 1,000km first service (when I'll get oil/filter changed again. What do you guys reckon - am I doing the right thing in regards to break-in? Cheers - and enjoy your ride this weekend!

Padmei
15th August 2008, 07:40
Sounds about what I'm doing Thommo on the new KLR. Going in for my 1000K service today hopefully. The only thing I've found is that you may need to loctite & tighten all the bolts you can as many of min have vibrated undone over tracks like Maunga.

from what I've read re breaking in Kawas you should get rid of that factory oil as soon as & put some good mineral oil in.

I thought the 200's were super reliable? Not many, 78 hrs, 2750km. Yes, it is quite unexpected and I can't find any similar experiences documented online (but search results are a 'noisy channel')... at least not for KTMs.

Personally, I find that a bit over the top (would drive me nuts).1000rpm higher at 100km sooner - quote from an industry insider - if you are doing it 'by the book'. There is also the mototune method.

Changing oil at 100km is most useful, rumour has it there's more particulate matter generated in that very first interval than through the next 900km. Exponential decay curve, not linear.

thommo77

Thanks for that. Any suggestions on oil brand? Obviuosly motorbike specific and not synthetic. Also, I notice SuperCheap have pre-oiled oil filters. Anyone tried these?

Padmei
15th August 2008, 17:03
Be a bit wary of the oil. After reading the very thorough breakin procedure at KLR650.net I stipulated to the dealer that I wanted to put in Shell Rotella - a diesel oil recommended due to the lack of Moly in the oil. They came back & said they would void the warrantee if it went in the engine.

We settled on Castrol mineral bike specific oil. I guess Catrol have been around & got a pretty good rep. Amsol is another brand recommended from the Stateside websites but unsure if you can get it here.

Is your KLX road legal? They look like grouse bikes.

Took the Filco scorpio 225 demo out while they serviced Gonzo today - what a cool little bike. :Punk: Talk about fun. Goes to show you don't have to have a big bike to have a good time

Nearly a quarter of the price is a "gasket kit" but I'm buggered if I can tell what's in it or why it is so expensive, the individual gaskets I can see are about $30.

Padmei - yep, the klx is road legal. One of the reasons I got it. Plan on doing about 75% off road, but still want to be able to shoot into town etc when need to. Great bike so far!
As I'm pretty slightly built, I didn't want anything too bulky/heavy either.
Did a lot of 'research' on the net prior to buying it. Only read a couple of complaints which were either minor cosmetic things, or guys wanting a tad more power which is easily fixed in required.
Cheap too, as opposed to other similar bikes and more features than most in it's class. The other option was the new Yammy WR, but costs another $4,000-odd!

Padmei
18th August 2008, 16:51
Yeah the Yammys are more expensive. My mate bought a cfr250r which is great bike but we can't ride anywhere that requires going on the road. I think the KLX is the ticket.

PS Maungatapu was fun yesterday! Did anyone see the signs of the 'off' heading to NSN, up the top above the first climb up from the ford? Sharp right-hander after a more open series of slight bends. Big skid heading off the road, pointing at a small tree that looks like it is half pushed over, with about 1m of bark scraped off it. :D

Looking at doing some "research" on distances/times/accessability of some tracks for possible inclusion in the "Tasman Dust Buster".

Along the lines of...
Nelson
Richmond
Brightwater
Wairoa Gorge
Boundary Road/Ben Nevis
Wairoa Gorge
Pig Valley
Church Valley
Wakefield
Dovedale Hill
Jacobs Ladder
Rosedale Hill
Upper Moutere
Old Coach Rd
Motueka (Fuel?)
Mt Campbell (gate at bottom needs permission so may not include this - yet)
Mot Valley West Bank
Mt Arthur
Jacobs Ladder
Sunday Creek
Panic Mac Rd
Spooners Lookout
Tapawera/Baton Rd
Glenrae Rd
Fairhall Rd
Tadmor Bushend Rd
Tapawera
Spooners
Wakefield
Brightwater
Richmond
Nelson

The only non-public-roads bits look to be parts of Old Coach Road and Panic Mac to Spooners.

I may get lost (several times) so anyone that comes along does so at their own risk :dodge:

Tapawera/Baton Rd

Nordie, this bit thru Glenrae, Fairhall Rds is a forestry block, I've ridden it before but not sure if "public access" is okay. You gotta ride thru the forestry camp just past Tapawera and wander around a bit to find the entrance to the track up onto Hollands road. It also passes thru a small section of farm, maybe 500m at the Fairhall Rd (Tadmor end) but you have to go thru a farm gate just before the farmhouse near the road end. Possibly be aware of restricted access during lambing time. Yeah, it's a good fun piece of dirt, but the logging roads go everywhere, be prepared to take a couple of wrong turns. And there's bunnies and hares everywhere, good fun to chase!
I'd love to join ya but I've gotta work (in the afternoon) both Sat and Sund. Maybe I could venture out in the morn...

NordieBoy
29th August 2008, 08:09

You hang a right over the Tap bridge and left onto Glenrae Road and go from there.

Had a look up the Boundary Rd/Ben Nevis loop this arvo. Great weather and top views. Think I might have gone down the same MB track you did, Nordie!

Slightly off the topic - but I've now put about 400kms on the bike.
Noticed today when I got home that the coolant reserve tank was showing 'L'. When I picked the bike up from dealer, it was 1/2 way between 'F' & 'L'. Is it unusual for this to get low this soon?
Ive checked for leaks, but none visible. Also, any suggestions on coolant brands to top it up?
Finally, Ive been told the higher octane fuel, the better. This true? Im making a point of filling up with the new V Power (95) stuff at Shell.

Use the lowest octane the bike will run nicely on.
The DR prefers 91 and even my old Nordie (water cooled 558cc single with 48hp) liked 91 best.

Went thru porika yesterday with a mate but didn't get thru. There are trees down in the way. We got over a few smaller ones ok but had to slide Gonzo the big Fat F over one medium sized one then hit a messy big trunk. Well folks what a great weekend. Sounds like you had a good ride crazy. I managed to get out of the house about 4pm today. I weighed up between squeezing in the last 10mins of the bike show or riding - I went riding.

I went up sharlands to have a poke around but the gates up sharlands(3k) & central road were locked. Could have rode around them but thought better not lest we loose access altogether.

Ended up going over the maunga again (getting to know it pretty well now) & down & back along the road. What a fantastic feeling having a warm breeze thru the helmet rather than having snot icicles hanging from ones nose. Summer is slowly coming:wari:

Anyone doing the 6hr cross country next weekend as I'm crewing for some friends. BTW what do you call those fires they have in the pits where you can't see the flames? I want to try one:shifty:

Jenni and I went up Mt Duppa and had a play around on the roads there.
It was quite cool when I would ask which direction at a junction and she'd point to the one that didn't lead back to the main road :D
This was the first time she has gone exploring with me.
Well apart from once through the Maungatapu when it was at it's worst and put her off for over a year :)

Still undecided about the 6hr. Would definitely be racing if the bike hadn't packed a sad :crybaby:, as I really enjoyed last year. Will have to see if I can blag a ride with a mate (pony express) or maybe even just go out to help as crew or marshal.

PS might be doing an afternoon ride in the next couple of days, over the Maungatapu to Pelorus for coffee. Any takers?

Looked like heaps of fun.

We ended up crewing for Chris someone who was bit of a gun apparently. Didn't know him from a bar of soap but he ended up winning so it must have been due to the excellent way I poured petrol over everything on the bike & managing to get a squirt into the tank.

He had a hard case with about ten pairs of new wind-on type goggles. Oh to be sponsored :( anyway i've got about 9 pairs to sell:devil2:

He had a hard case with about ten pairs of new wind-on type goggles. Oh to be sponsored :( anyway i've got about 9 pairs to sell:devil2:Bastard, I've just bought a set of those. But if the price is right I might be in for another pair. Last year in the wet that would've been a real bonus, in the end I gave up on my goggles, didn't even bother to get pit crew to clean them each lap as they wouldn't last until the top of the first hill without fogging up. Rode so much without them that my eyes were red & gritty for days afterward. Passing quads was particularly interesting.

Padmei
23rd September 2008, 07:26
those quads would scare the hell out of me, those wide rotating leg rippers beside you:(

Casual ? casual? we were on to it:rolleyes:

warewolf
23rd September 2008, 10:10
Those leg rippers are the least of your worries. They don't spend much time beside you, as you're either letting them past or if you get beside them, it's an easy matter to open the throttle to get in front. The difficult bit is the getting up level with them. Especially in the wet when they throw up so much spray.:argh:

Several riders came in with bark missing from quad riders hitting them. :doctor:

One had his elbow grazed and glove nearly ripped off, can't remember if he had to remove elbow armour when he showed us the blood.

A quad slammed into a pair of riders who'd pulled over hard left and stopped to let him through. He basically ploughed straight into them, claiming he couldn't see for the dust. More like his own bulldust they reckoned, he simply wasn't watching.

And right at the end a rider claimed he got firmly and deliberately bunted in the rear tyre by a quad. He knew the quad was approaching and was looking for a place to let him through and the quad apparently hit him without even giving him the opportunity to pull over! That episode got the stewards involved. Apparently the quad rider concerned is known to the stewards for getting a bit aggro.

One lap I saw Chris giving what looked like an I'm-pissed-off-with-you stare to a quad as he passed after trailing it in to the pits.

I suspect the atv riders are used to a bit more dodgem-car-like argy-bargy when they race, and they forget they are in a mixed field.

Padmei
23rd September 2008, 19:00
Yeah its funny how some people react once they're on the bike. One little prick in 'our' tent was pissed off that people were in his way when he came in to refuel that he roosted everyone when he left. I was close to helping him off his bike by his helmet - he ended up having a little sleep instead of doing the last lap:baby:

Others are laid back & really grateful for any help -they make helping out wrthwhile:niceone:

Gonna have to get me a little bike - would there be much diff in weight handling etc btween a 250 & 350-400 as the bigger older bikes seem to be cheaper? If I go too heavy I may as well use gonzo:rolleyes:

Anyone need some wiring done in exchange for a bike???

warewolf
23rd September 2008, 22:04
That's a pretty open-ended question. I suspect the 250s are dearer because of the learner limits, and there's fewer of them. Most people tend to want the extra power of the bigger bikes.

The DR-Z400 is water cooled, taller seat height, 60% more power but only 15% more weight than the 250. The 400 is a much more popular bike, but being shorter and lighter myself, I went with the 250. Despite topping out the power regularly, it was a really fun bike. It tired me out pretty easily, the 400 would have been worse I reckon - heavier to chuck around and pick up after an off, and more power to get you in to trouble.

Compared to a 2T, they are both heavy dogs. :Pokey:

Engine capacity has a bearing on agility. The 2T KTM EXCs in 200-250-300cc are only about 1kg apart, but the 300 feels a helluva lot heavier when mobile. Ditto the 4T range, the 450 is the same weight as the 525, but feels lighter and more responsive.

For a good learning experience, go for the smallest and lightest you can get away with.

NordieBoy
24th September 2008, 08:10
A pre '86 XR250 would do the business and be able to be raced in Classic MX as well :D

The '79 XR500 is only a couple of KG heavier than the '79 XR250.
But once the engine is started it feels a hell of a lot heavier.

CrazyFrog
24th September 2008, 22:33
Boys, I've just added a DRZ400 to my stable....good price and very low use, seems good so far, rides well and motor crisp. And it's got all the road shit on it too, although the T4 pipe would startle the chaps at VTNZ at warrant time. I'd better search for a stocker and switch 'em when the time comes.
Woohoo, something to chuck around without crying about broken bits of fancy plastic. Time to practice them dirt skills:headbang:

There is/was a DR200 for sale in blenheim which may have been perfect but no money at moment:(.

Had a great ride today over rosedale, jacobs ladder, Sunday creek. Got a fair bit of gravel riding in which was excellent.
Got in a few tight spots following a road into the forestry overlooking Harley Rd -Followed a wide road into dozer tracks to 4wd tracks down a few chutes ended up narrowing into a single track blocked by trees. Got back out ok - Amazing what a fistful of throttle & a bit of faith in your tyres will Do:2thumbsup

Was a good ride. First time Jenni has been over and back. Only had to walk 2 sections on the way over - The steep bit to the 1st bridge and one of the steep bumpy wet clay sections.
Rode all the way back no problem. The DR chugging away nicely.

About 15min quicker going back to Nelson than getting to Pelorus.
1 mountain biker, a couple of walkers and a bow-hunter. Not much traffic at all.

On the way back the cloud was wicked the way it was spilling over the tops.

The fairing is due to come off as dont need it for daily commute now that the cold weather has gone. We ended up returning over the tar due to time, but the track is a great ride I first rode it the mid seventies on a ts 250 suzuki with my wife onboard so there was a bit of walking for her as well and the track was not much different then. The poor old horses would have worked their guts out getting up there pulling a wagon ,a 100 odd years ago, thats for sure.

Topo - did that KTM come from Dorkland? Headlights/screen and blackness look very much like a the bike that inmate Black Balls had down here in Chch then sold up north. He may (not sure) still have he motard wheels if your interested. Also if it is the bike I think it is, if you scratch the black paint on the plastic radiator shrouds you'll find it is a Six Days yellow model, pic here (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=1353179&postcount=7).

The Penzance track as far as im aware turns into the pylon track at the Elaine bay end, we started at the Tennyson side and got about half a k in. Manhandled the AT up the first slippery bit then had to push/drag the 640 up the next one, it was at that point we decided to let it dry out a bit before attempting it again next time. If it was really dry i don't think that it would have presented too may issues but the wet clay/moss/slime was so slippery we could hardly walk on some of it let alone ride the bikes up.

Yip the bikes a terdme special from Dorkland, thanks for the links it's great to hear some of her history.

[QUOTE=cooneyr;1756743]Uncle-in-law use to have a bach in Penzance. Been looking at the pylon track over to the top to the Elaine Bay road for a while now. Is that the one you did or did you go around the foreshore walking track? If you did the pylon track how does it compare with the likes of the Manga for difficulty?

That pylon track makes a useful loop, I've done it by myself on the @ from the Elaine end in the dry ...not advisable because there are some hard places to pick a heavy bike up from , The 4x4's dont seem to use it cause theres a tree down you can just get under on a bike .definately doable in the dry with more than one person (we,ll be back ) Compared to the Manga? Manga,s a doddle , I met 3 guys on fanny ticklers up there a couple of weeks ago.

Maunga has a bit of mud at the moment.
Well it does if you go looking for it.
This is a hard section of the first pylon track yesterday as I was testing the carb settings and new pipe.
Your boots sunk in about half a boot and the rear tyre sunk in to the axle.
There's a little trickle of creek water that keeps it all wet.
Shocking conclusion: IRC GP110's are not the ideal mud tyre...

Right you lot of pikers :2guns:

There were reports of snow up Ben Nevis and the Richmond Ranges :D

Left Apple Valley at 7:20pm and headed toward Old Coach Road where there was just 1 small pile of logs and a loader left of all the gear that was up there.

Getting darker up Rosedale and I found I ride gravel better at night  I think because I can't see as much so I'm not worrying about it and just riding and letting the bike move around more.

The view from the summit of Rosedale Hill.
http://photostorage.nelson.geek.nz/dr650/niteride.jpg

Down the other side and other than a few "shadows" taking flight and heading into the trees it was uneventfull but I noticed I could cut corners better as you could tell from the oncomming lights where other vehicles were.

Jacobs Ladder was worrying me as I usually can't get it's turns right but this time it was a doddle.

Back down the valley from the summit of Jacobs Ladder.
http://photostorage.nelson.geek.nz/dr650/niteride.jpg

The ride to the Dove Hill was a bit boreing as it was on the seal and 100kph with the visor down and fogging a bit but the Dove hill was fun.
I coasted all the way down much better than I have during the day.

View from the Dove Hill/Pigeon Valley intersection.
http://photostorage.nelson.geek.nz/dr650/niteride.jpg

I decided to head straight back home from Wakefield as I was only wearing my thin gloves and don't have heated grips like some pansies and didn't want to risk Ben Nevis solo.

I need to do a bit of work as my dash lights still light me up like a christmas tree and are not good for my night vision.
The bar risers work nicely and I found myself cruising the road back from Wakefield at 90kph 'cause that's the speed the GSXR pipe sounded best at :Punk:

I also took Mondo Enduro, Terra Circa and African Odyssey with me in case they were getting bored just going round and round in the DVD player.

What a fantastic day to go out riding. Sorry Nordieboy but got your text too late.

I went over to COllingwood with a couple of KTM retard friends & really put Gonzo into overdrive trying to keep up. (They were nice & waited).

I have never seen so many bikes on the road & 95% of them waved back - even cruisers:shit:

I have to say that it is worth a trip over there for the excellent coffee & unbelievably scrummy chocolate macaroon biscuit (they were even gluten free but that didn't put me off) at the cafe.

I went through the Maunga about 3:30 or so with the intention of doing as many side/pylon tracks as possible.

Got all but one :Punk:
I walked down that one and wasn't at all sure I'd get back up without knobs. Or get through the gluten free mud at the bottom.
Some of the pylon tracks are quite nice for a bit more of a workout than the main track.
I'm getting far more confident about what I can go up (and down) and that's going to bite me soon I can tell :D

I'm going to get the XR road legal so I can have a play on the more gnarly bits of the various tracks without risking the big DR as much.

Still want to put some knobs on the DR and ride it to and do a laidback on it

I went through the Maunga about 3:30 or so with the intention of doing as many side/pylon tracks as possible.

Got all but one :Punk:
I walked down that one and wasn't at all sure I'd get back up without knobs. Was that the one off to the right, closest to the saddle? I've been down that a couple of times, it looks steeper than it is but yes, I'd want decent tyres. Took me a couple of difficult standing-starts each time, because I wanted the practice rather than doing it the smart way by going back down to the bottom.

What a fantastic day to go out riding.
...
Heaps of MXers on the back of utes in Richmond. Did the trailride go well? Anyone else get out?

Still want to put some knobs on the DR and ride it to and do a laidback on it :love:Sunday's NMCC laid back trail ride was an absolute blast on the 640A, a really great day out with mates. I took the mirrors off, fitted up a used MX rear tyre and an enduro DOT front. It was a dry and dusty day, so no mud issues with the big heavy pig. Almost all was hardpack gravel roads and hardpack firebreaks covered in big goolies.

Did all the A and AA grade loops at various times during the day; one (down) I didn't care to repeat as it was too much like hard work. I had to keep increasing the compression damping both ends as the speeds rose during the day, in the end the suspension on the big beast was the limiting factor. The bash plate lived up to its name.

One reason for enjoying the day so much was the opportunity to use the 640A in anger. Strangely I only noticed the weight when it bottomed out, or the front-bias on the killer downhills amongst the goolies. I am now much more confident in the front end which was always an issue. As a result the poor front tyre has 80% of the side knobs broken at the base. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

Very highly rated as doable on an adventure bike with even modest tyres, sticking to the main loops. Half the A grades were easy enough taken slowly, others you had to be somewhat committed. My mates on a 'Berg FE450 and a TT-R250 both managed to stall/stop/fall over on various hills, both up and down, and manage to get going again fairly easily and by themselves.

Nordie you missed your big opportunity!! :crybaby:

Nah, there'll be others...

I'm getting more confidence in the front of the DR as well.
On Sunday I did the river crossing by the bridge on the Pelorus side without stopping to think about it and even had the confidance to stop half-way down and take a photo.

My ideas for the '81 XR250 have mutated from cheap trail bike to cool little mini dakar type bike :devil2:
