View Full Version : Newbie mentoring

Im not certain how this will work out so here is my Idea pitch, this is more for those who have had a good few years of riding under our belts, and preferably of a more stable riding nature.
We seem to have a great in flux of Newbie riders witch I see as a good thing, and some of these riders have got through their basic handeling course, and have gone out and brought their first bike, they are at the stage of taking their first few steps out into the world of motorcycling, and some may require the help and support of those who have the exsperience and milage under our tyres to give them some practical imput on a one on one basis, it may be just help get them started, and do some of the basic road skills Ie Hill starts and stops, riding in the wet etc.
Now I view this as voluntary, though it would be between you and your newbie as to what sort of deal you strike, some newbies will require more help than others, some may require the help of a professional cycle tutor or course.
This is not about teaching the newbie how to do burn outs, wheel stands, or stoppies, they can learn that stuff latter on, this is about getting them started on their own, so they can travel from A to B happily with in their own ability.
so what I am thinking is that the old heads in Motorcycling, who can afford the time, dont mind being a mentor, have a bucket full of patience, and an ability to pass on their own exsperience to a newbie, put their name and area into this thread.
My self I probably could only afford to put in a few hours a week, and would charge a coffee for my input.
So please state if this is a good or bad idea, and if good if you would be keen to give some time to our Newbies.
No contact details need be given as they can PM you through the site.

funny enough.
There used to be a kiwibiker mentor program. It got out of hand and is currently being remodelled.
Coming (back) soon to a town near you will be offical kiwibiker mentors.....

with all due repect.
this is why the mentor program is being remodelled. Offers like yours come in abundance and it became unsure and unstable as a reliable mentor program.
There is water in the pipeline and it will surface soon enough.

This refurbishment has been in the works for what seems an eternity. What is actually happening? Is anything happening?
No offense intended to those who may be working on it, just the general KB population has no information regarding issues or ETA's... Which would give one the appearance that nothing is happening...

such is the kiwibiker way. Alot has been organised via PM and in the background.
It is a need to know basis and if you dont know you dont need to.

ETA's are difficult, especially when having to rely on 1) people 2) who aren't part of the group that are remodelling things.
Good news is we're in the last stages before launch. Bad news is, still waiting on some stuff/responses from others. It's been sitting in a holding pattern for a little while now and will stay there for just a bit longer.

thanks for clearing that up. At least a note every now and then saying "sitting in holding pattern" lets the minions know that something is going to happen.

Very close...
Unfortunately, those tying it all together have all had that thing called "real life" get in the way.
Workin' on it...

Last night was interesting. 3 novices,2 helpers and 2 wanting just to shake off a little rust

Just like my discussion last night around the table about Hi-vis vests...... I think they make you MORE visable to fixated on! But for the sake of keeping warm, maybe I should don one on while we are training. (Makes me look important too ;))
As for Trusting you.............. ever heard of the Trusted Profession list?
"Rounding out the top 10 are veterinarians at 63%; medical doctors at 58%; kindergarten through 12th grade teachers at 57%; clergy members at 56%; judges at 53%; and police officers, dentists, and college teachers each at 52%, according to the release. The five professionals considered least honest by the public, based on the percentages of people rating the occupation as low or very low on honesty and ethics are telemarketers at 55%, insurance salespeople at 44%, health maintenance organization managers at 41%, lawyers at 41%, and automobile sales representatives at 8%." :Pokey:
