Hey all,

not wanting to spend a huge ammount of money on boots, but i have large calf muscles and a lot of the cheaper brands tend to not really do up unless they have a zipper + velcro - but most of the cheaper ones dont have the zipper anyway..

had a try of these boots: http://www.colemans-suzuki.co.nz/content/catalogue-entry.aspx?entryPK=1679

very nice, very comfortable, fit nicely, but the pricetag is a tad higher than i would really LIKE to spend..

i mean they are great boots and will likely last me at least till i have my full and get a bigger bike and them some..

anyone have any recommendations of places i can have a look at or general brands/styles to look for?

I wear those exact same boots. They're perfectly waterproof, very comfy and offer excellent toe-feel for the brake and gearshift levers. Absolutely lovely.

Only comment I'd make is that they don't have toe sliders, and will come apart / stop being waterproof fairly quickly once you start dragging them on the road (and/or binning in them, ahem, although dragging the toes is what will fuck them the most, oddly enough). Mine are looking a bit sorry for themselves after only a year of use.

They'd be perfect for a cruiser rider, but my next pair of boots will have (replaceable) toe sliders and a bit more hard plastic to grind off generally before the leather starts coming away.

Red Baron is still having their Sale I think.
I recently got a pair of AXO boots from them for $200 which seem very nice.
For $280 they had Gaerne race/tour boots...waterproof with toe sliders, shinguards built in etc.
They were nice too...but I didn't see the need to spend the extra myself

I have spare set at home if you wanna "try" them. They smell a bit from being wet but nothing an odour sock or something can fix. If you want them send me a pm.

PS size 13

Jrandom, when you say toe slider, what do you mean? still new to the whole bike gear world - never really bothered with anything past jacket and gloves on my scooter haha. Im assuming they are some kinda plastic/metal strip that takes the brunt of any dragging/scraping and can be replaced?

but yeah they were definitely comfy boots - i didnt try both on or see how they felt when sitting on the bike though - but i can defiintely do that when i get the bike.

That's the one. You'll see them on the gay multicoloured Spaceman Spiff boots that look like you should be wearing a one-piece toothpaste tube to go with them while you practice bending over and moaning.

(All motorcycle racers are homosexual - this is a known fact, admitted by many KBers of that persuasion. Occasional apparent breeding of babies with human females by motorcycle racers is a well-known ploy to fool you into thinking otherwise.)

But, yeah. Replaceable plastic strips that screw on to the outside of the toe area of your boot, so that when your foot touches down as you go around corners it doesn't grind away the bit where the leather joins the sole and eventually render them non-waterproof and not-entirely-protective-of-your-toes.

Unfortunately for the heterosexuals among us, those plastic strips are a pretty good idea.

Sidi Vertigos are what you'd want. A bit pricier than the Evos you were looking at, but only 23% as gay as anything with 'Alpinestars' on it.

correct me if im wrong, but that doesnt sound like a particularly important feature for a cruiser style bike to me?

Well, that's why I said that the Evos would be great boots for cruiser riders.

I forgot that that's the style of bike you were getting next. So, knock yourself out. The Evos (edit: sorry, 'Strada Evo Tepors' according to the Colemans website) would be my choice.

:niceone:

sweet well that sounds like the ones im gonna get then, i just wish Coleman's had more options hehe

ah well, getting part of the purchase financed anyway haha, whats another 400?

besides, i came off my scooter in the first week i had it (minor accident, tight corner into a small gap in traffic when i should have waited, too much throttle panicked and didn't release it so semi crashed into someone's curb/driveway heh) and kinda hurt my ankle - still makes me wince every now and then so getting some decent boots aint a bad idea.

thanks for the input JR

Another option you could look at is the Stylmartin Styl-Safe boots. I would've bought them in a heartbeat if I could get them done up over my leathers. Nicest touring boots I've seen, but about $450 retail from memory.
I ended up buying the Sidi Vertigo Mega Gore-tex boots for $540 because they fit so well, but those Stylemartin's were awesome.

I can tell you, I've crashed in sports/racing style boot and those plasticky bits you once thought was gay/butch looking did it's job. They pretty much take the hiding and leaving your foot intact.

However if you don't intend on crashing then it shouldn't really worry you too much, most of it is just extra protection systems for your ankles and foot.
But hey, it's always good to be on the safe side! :msn-wink:

yeah i kinda figured those bits werent there for looks haha, i think ill go with the $400 pair from coleman's - they were comfortable, stable and, obviously, waterproof, and also have a decent amount of armouring.

thanks all for the advice :D any more is still appreciated :)

I am just an old fashend I like my good old combat boots, I use 5.11 boots they have the normal front laces but also have the side zips so they are easy to put on and take off with the added comfort of adjusting the calf witjh the laces so it fits all size calfs. and you can tuck and adjust if needed.
Plus they look and feel great.
you can buy them pus other styles at http://www.tacticalsolutionscorp.com/
here in Auckland..... I love that shop like a boy in a sweet shop:2thumbsup

Likewise, only I use these (http://paraflex.co.nz/details.php?product_id=16). Good boots, made in Christchurch, completely waterproof (I've waded in the sea to the top of the boot, and they didn't leak). Steel caps are good too - I had someone ride over my toes on a scooter.

Yes I had Paraflex when I was in Rescue a very good boot.
I found that they sweat too much in summer though but very comfy to wear.

Swear by Sidi Vertigo Corsa's. Full race boot but all the protection you need.
After breaing my ankle in Dec 06 I wish I had been wearing them then. lateral ankle supports, ratchet across the top of the foot, ratchet up to the calf muscle, ceramic toesliders etc. Comfortable, air vents for summer and I just love them. Expensive....yep, but what price do you put on your ...... :)

are they waterproof though? both the vertigo and vertigo corsa look like a great boot but waterproof is important for me, especially considering i dont need the toe sliders etc on a cruiser style bike

*edit* - it looks like the sidi vertigo boots are waterproof but the corsa's may not be?

I can only say that a good pair of boots, despite the cost today, in the long run will be a good decision. My Sidis are 15 years old, admittedly I haven't done a lot of riding, but they are still waterproof and strong. Every now and then I give them a new coat of Snowseal wax which does the job nicely. Same for my leather jacket which is the same age.

Prior to that I wore army boots which were excellent but a real fag having to do the laces up all the time.
