View Full Version : What the hell is the TTTTT?
young1
13th August 2008, 20:36
Well we have had the MMMM and the WWWWW, so it is time for the TTTTT (Terribly Terrific Taranaki Tunnel Tour).
And as I was volunteered to organise a Naki ride during the Kawhia Overnighter (thanks everyone!) I thought I would drag Phreaky Phil in to help, he has a vast knowledge of the back country roads in the Naki so this ride promises to be pretty good.
What can we offer on this ride;
It is a tunnel tour so at least 10 tunnels, and these aren't gay paved, ventilated big city tunnels, these are rough, unpaved, water flowing through them type tunnels!
Whangamomona, for the Adventure rider not much more needs to be said about this place (or the pub!). Yes we will be stopping there
The Bridge to Somewhere, yes you read that right, a very close relative of the Bridge to Nowhere.
The highest water fall in the North Island, this is impressive, believe me
Kiwi Road, again an icon in the Adventure ride world, unsealed, big drops, grass growing up the middle, and being a tunnel tour - a tunnel at the top!
Accomodation at $25.00 per head in the bustling town of Te Wera (well it was bustling before they took the petrol station, shop and railway station away)
Stunning views of Mt Taranaki, and
Lots of blonde young women going by the name of Baaabaaara!
I hope I have wetted your appetites!
What Phil and I need is some idea of how many of you are interested in doing this ride and when.
We have two dates in mind (to fit in between Rosies ride and the Hawkes Bay ride) either 27 and 28 September or 4 and 5 October.
So sort your leave passes out with your partners (or start earning brownie points now) and let us know;
If you want to do this ride and
What date suits.
Yes Marks there is trailer parking at my place (or will you have the Buell by then......)
Oh yeah, for some of you on the smaller bikes who don't mind getting dirty, we might have a special treat for you that could give you two more tunnels.
Oh I forgot to mention that Jim Hickey is a good Naki boy so he will arrange the good weather for us!
Once we some replies we will sort the dates out and go further with this.
UPDATE
Freaky Phil and I have just sorted out the route that we well take on this ride. We have tried to combine as much of the Naki gravel as possible in our route as well as the tunnels, Bridge to Somewhere and the Mt Damper falls.
The tricky part is all the different directions that people maybe taking to get to the ride. Now you guys talking about staying at the Whanga pub on the Friday night, that is fine, BUT have you thought about staying at the Awakino Hotel as that makes route selection much better.
If you plan on staying at Whangamomona, Taumarunui etc on Friday night that is okay as we can easily meet you in Ohura on Saturday morning.
UPDATE the Awakino hotel is full (they are booked out with two other groups of bikers...) but we can stay in the house around the corner, so even more of an adventure. When booking quote my name MICHAEL.
WRF2800 your booking for three people has been moved to the house. The rest of you space is limited so please book early and let me know on here when you have done it. Could be an awesome night!!
We will still go to the Whangamomona pub as we plan to have lunch at the pub on the Sunday. Have a think about that.
Good meeting spots on Saturday will be Awakino or Ohura. If you are coming from the South let us know.
Meals at Te Wera the charge will be $25.00 per head cash (you Aucklanders that means no plastic or your old collection of 1 and 2 dollar notes) for a cooked evening meal, dessert and cooked breakfast. Remember that accomodation is also $25.00 per head. Phil and I will do the bookings for Te Wera.
Lunch we plan to have at the Whanga pub on the Sunday and from there you can head North, South, West (and if you head East your GPS unit is rooted!). Petrol will be available in Whanga, we have made special arrangements, at $3.00 per litre. We will sort out distances later for you they won't be big distances but these are windy back country roads.
There maybe a few extras who aren't on the list of attendees as some of the Naki guys who may be attending are not KB members.
16 September update;
Meals (dinner and breakfast) at Te Wera are $25.00 each. These are being done by the local school mums as a fund raiser type thing. They need to know the final numbers by Wednesday next week. That is we will tell them how many meals we need, they will times that by $25.00 and that is what we have to pay.
SO we can not take the risk of anyone saying that they will be on the ride and then on Thursday / Friday pulling out with a weak excuse (my pet goldfish died, there is a cloud on the horizon etc etc) as we (Phil and I) will have to pay.
Everyone who has registered for the ride I will send you by PM details of my bank account. Please deposit $25.00 into my ASB Bank account with your Kiwibike name as the reference. When I see it in the bank I will PM you with confirmation.
Yes you can trust me!!
Saturday morning we plan to leave Awakino Hotel at 8.45am. By then you need to have filled your bikes up at the Awakino petrol station which is approx 2 or 3kms north of Awakino on the main road.
If you are no longer going please update the calendar.
AWAKINO ACCOMODATION UPDATE
They now have 13 booked into the house and flat. That is all they can take. If you do not have somewhere to stay on Friday I suggest;
Seaview Holiday Park (approx 3km south of the pub) 0800 478 786 or
Mokau Inn Motel 06 752 9725
Awakino accomodation is sleeping bags. Accomodation cost is $15.00 per head. It may mean two sleeping bags on a double bed (but isn't that part of the adventure!!) and others are on mattresses on floor.
As the hotel has another group of bikers staying they will put on a smorgasboard on Friday night for $20.00 per head.
i will post details early next week of the route, approx distances, petrol stops etc

I'd def be keen for the earlier dates 27-28 Sept, I've already got leave anyway and will be coming up from the south. I planned on doin' a reccy of the backroads from Stratford to Awakino, probably next weekend 24 Aug on my way up from Welly to visit a mate in the Naki. Y'know, take the long way there...

Assuming its dryish you guys "should" be ok but it is a bit more of a track than a road, Triboy, that bit of Fishers Track we did on the way to the CCA is the same as the traverse so you know what the conditions are like ok?
Obviously big bikes get thru there, an aquaintance of mine took a R100PD thru, in the latest Kiwi Rider Stretch and a mate took a KTM990 & Cagiva Gran Canyon thru after the CCA. Lets just apply a bit of common sense (yeah, right) and see what happens, if it gets too sticky we can always turn around.

You'll keep....
I thought it was more a crisis in management myself.
Seeing as you lot are interested: it was a bit of Oooh, this is a bit of a steep downhill, look front wheel skids, oops, going a bit fast for this tight right hand corner (don't accelerate downhill, remember this), hello nice soft bushy thing.
Back on topic....A plan!
Seeing as there seems to be a small pack of us now a rough plan would be: 10.00 in Taupo, 11.30 at the start of the 42 traverse (near to national park), 1.30 at Owhango (the other end of the traverse), 2.30 at national park for the Fisher track, about 4.00 at the end of the Fisher track and about 6ish at Whangamomona.
This does mean no buggering around, 2 hour lunches, punctures etc but there are obviously options to miss the Fisher track if we need to. Personally, I want to do both the traverse and fishers and as much gravel as possible between.

You can run it either way but if you start from National Park it is generally downhill.
Starts at fishers road by the train station in National Park running in a westerly direction and comes out at Kurua road (joins Retaruke road).
You can find both of these on Google earth if you fancy a bit of a look, looks quite cool when you tilt the terrain map to get an idea of steepness of the hills.

Seeing as there seems to be a small pack of us now a rough plan would be: 10.00 in Taupo, 11.30 at the start of the 42 traverse (near to national park), 1.30 at Owhango (the other end of the traverse).
Department of conservation web site showing that the 42 traverse is closed to all vehicles untill 1st december 2008.

I will ring DOC tomorrow to get a few more details and post the result, either way I'm sure I can find some suitable entertainment in the area.

I have talked to DOC at Tongariro and the Traverse is only closed to 4x4's as per their usual seasonal restrictions so we are ok to go.
I will make some enquiries to try and find out the track conditions (other than DOCs "probably wet?") but as long as we continue to have drying weather we should be ok. I will take a jar of common sense as well, I've just got to remember where I last saw the damn stuff....
If weather & conditions are against us there is pleanty to explore in the area, Pureora, Pillars of Hercules, Rangipo Intake and Tukino skifield so maybe a circumnavigation of Ruapehu and then gravel to Whangamomona. Depends who decides to come from where and realistic time & weather constraints.
At this stage lets leave it until the week before to confirm a route and meeting places and as usual we will make it up as we go. :wari:

Awakino shouldn't be a problem, I'll just adjust the timing of the friday chaos to suit. Awakino is certainly a nice pub to stay at, you coming over for a drink on friday then?

Yes I plan to stay there on the Friday night.
Start time on Saturday, we would like to be away from there 9 to 9.30 again depends on where people are coming from. That gives us morning tea at Ohura.

Poos! it is not our group!! There is a Rotorua group staying there, the hotel is contacting that group to see how many beds they need. They will let me know how many they have left over.

Awakino seems to be an awfully long detour to make from the end of fishers track then have to head back towards whangamomona again the next morning.
Wouldnt Owhango pub or somewhere in Taumaranui seem a better idea to stay for friday night ?????

Just another accommodation option for those who want to stay on the coast, Mokau is only 5 km from Awakino, also has a pub, takeaways etc and more beds there if Awakino fills up. See ya'll up there:soon:
Oh yeah, what's the deal at Te Wera campground? Tents required or do they have a big lodge or something. In other words, do I need to bring sleeping bag or will they provide a luxurious bed with crisp linen for a filthy biker?

I see Young1 has quoted $25 for evening meal there, and $25 for the accom, so I'm guessing there must be a bunk hall or something similar. Need to find out where to get beer, so you guys can hear me snore:laugh:

To answer the last few questions;
Mokau, there is no pub there, but there is a motel.
I don't know what the cost of the Whanga pub is.
Te Wera camp is an old foresty camp that has been converted over the years to a camp that the schools now use for outdoor education. They have a new hall and kitchen block after the last one burnt down. You will need sleeping bags.
Cost for Te Wera is $50.00 all up for food and accomodation. One of the requirements is that we clean it before we leave so I am sure everyone will chip on with that.
Re booze, a mate of mine might come out and just ride day two on his KDX200 (he can also lead anyone who wants to go thru the Whanga rode) he (not that he knows it yet) will bring the beers out. Failing that we will find another way to get them there!

Cool looks like we are getting good numbers for this ride.
Due to numbers we may have to re work accomodation on Friday night, again it depends on a number of things but we will be able to sort it.
If you are planning on staying at Awakino please let the Hotel know, I will then liase with them to see the numbers staying vs beds etc. We will then sort out the other options.
Sleeping bags are needed for Te Wera at least.

Will update then.

9th September 2008, 16:25
The hotel can put up 13 in the house / flat "around the corner".
There are some beds, a fold out one, and they will also find some matresses for the floor.
The 13 number includes counting double beds as sleeping two (that should keep the DR boys happy!)
Counting myself they have 6 bookings already (one group of 3, Cary and Murray)
There are other options that I will look at closer to the time (after half you lot change your minds as to whether you are doing the ride or not!)
Marks you haven't registered yet, you going to be here?

Pop quiz tunnel tourers. Back in the good old days when these tunnels were being dug ( by hand of course ), how did they keep them straght and level. ??
The design of the tunnel was determined by a hanging chain which forms a mirror image of the tunnel cross section. Due to this design and the nature of the soil no shoring was required to support the roof of the tunnel.
The real question is how did some smart bugger figger this out?

I will be posting an update tonight re how we will do the meals at Te Wera.
young1
16th September 2008, 19:11

They now have 13 booked into the house and flat. That is all they can take. If you do not have somewhere to stay on Friday I suggest;

I also have a new tyre on for this weekend, just need to find a bit of gravel early on to scrub it in.
Re Jim Hickey - he will come through......
Good news - there will be no one having to share a double bed at Awakino tomorrow night, the "other group" of bikers has had some late cancellations so they have some spare beds in the hotel for us.
We will be operating a corner man system, both the leader and tail end charlie will have an orange high visibility jacket on. We will explain how this will work at the Ohura stop. Most of you already know but with so many bikes it would be easy to lose one.

Yep - a big thanks from me too. First time for me in the NZ hills, mud & hard-packed gravel / metal roads with unexpected ball-bearing patches mixed in for fun (and they seem to somehow congregate just on the outside of the optimal riding line through the turns, so if you're a tad sub-optimal like me, off course you gonna get into the stuff ...) - only managed to put the DR down once on the pea gravel on the way down to meet all in Ohura and later on twice in the mud - all in all a fun time!
Methinks I can get quite hooked on this :Punk:

A BIGthanks to Mike , Phil & Dawn and the rest of the naki crew for organizing and running the ride.
635 kms clocked for me for sat & sun and i enjoyed every k.
These rides just keep getting better and better.:woohoo::niceone:
The high lights of the ride for me were kiwi rd - the moki track and whangamomana rd.

That was a fantastic weekend's riding. Thanks again to Mike, Phil, and the rest who organised it all - esp Sunday's weather. The start from Taupo across the 42 made it even better. I daren't wash the crud off my bike because I know there's ugly grazes under there!

Thanks everyone for the thank you messages, I am glad that it looks as though everyone got home in one piece!
Also nice to be able to organise a ride for those Kiwi Bikers who have organised the ones in the past that I have been on, Clint640, Rosie and Triboy.
Also big thanks to Phil for being such a good leader, I was happy at the back swallowing everyone's dust.... ha ha
Now somewhere over the weekend I heard mention of a Wellington ride being organised.. Aslan? Marks (you were volunteered in your absense)?
Rosie - did you get to see the mountain on Sunday?
Some pics, dont want to repeat what is already here so just a few.

wow what a great weekend as young1 says looks like we all got home safely.
thanks Mike and others for your encouragement on Saturday when I passed too close to those country kids school bus shelter (read came into a Y shaped intersection too hot - hit pea gravel on recently sealed road - and slid 'rubber ducky' into the bus shelter - phew could have been a lot worse!)
Special mention to Kelvin for repairing the screen with duct tape.
The 1150 will be in getting the blemish on the tank repaired this week.
View of the mountain from Toko on way home.
PS MarkS and other Southern North Island KBers - Young1, Clint, TriBoy and others have thrown the challenge down for us to organise a ride. I'm thinking Wairarapa (Masterton as a base say) Eketahuna, Riversdale, Akitio, Gladstone Pub in there somewhere along with Hinakura. Any volunteers to assist?

I want this morphing ability - KLR on road morphs into DT on gravel morphs into WR on dirt.
Actually I'm very happy with the KLR - as a sedate all road tourer its brilliant. I would have really struggled with some of the muddy bits you guys went through over the weekend though - whereas the little DT would have tiptoed easily through it all - such is life :)

I don't think the owner is a member here and so I will pass on some impressions.
The answers are: -
It went well, especially in the rough stuff
Barely, he was planning to look for something more comfortable and was walking like John Wayne.
He was carrying a fuel container and fuel supplies need to be watched. Also commented that the throttle was more like a switch - another incentive to look for something more comfortable apparently.

Ouch, I am glad you're alright. The tank will buff out. Reminds me of a guy who, just over four years ago, did something similar on the turn off to Marakopa road. Only he managed to keep his shiny black R1150GS almost blemish free, by throwing his leg under it.
I am pretty sure it was Phil and Dawn who came to visit at Taranaki Base Hospital.
So don't sweat the scratches, they don't matter.
Four of us are off to do the 42nd Traverse. Is allowing two hours for it realistic?

As I recall, the broken bones saved {that guy} from bruises.
I wanted to kick his arse for scaring me so badly.
I was sitting on my bike with a dead engine when that Beemer started sliding toward me. It was only the fact that it hung up on a cylinder head and changed direction that saved my from damage to anywhere but my underpants.

I assure you I do.
My instinct for self preservation kept me firmly in the ranks of the B Grade Enduro class and at the back of the field in Hare Scrambles. It wasn't that I couldn't ride the Expert Tracks (hell, I marked out enough of them), it was just that I never had the nerve to maintain the blazing speed required.
On consideration I don't think it's about physical courage (I never shied away from fast bowlers or big Samoan forwards playing cricket or rugby). I think I just..um...think too much - whereas guys like Johnny or Stretch just did it - jumped that ditch or the big log, I was always concerned about what was on the other side or how steep the drop was, and in that split second, failed.
The best criticism I ever got about riding was that I wasn't looking far enough ahead - it's the corner/jump/rut after this one that's usually the problem...

This approach makes perfect sense to me. Every time I thought the 'laws of physics' didn't apply to me, I paid dearly for it. To ride another day, is more important than short sighted heroics.
I do try to improve my skills, but I like to have a reasonably sized safety net, to back me up when things go wrong.

But there is a possibility that I got a bit carried away on the twisty tar before Whanga & in my determination to get rid of those pesky chicken strips on my tyres I might have lost the front under braking. I was running a little more tyre pressure than usual which might not have helped.

Let's chat in the weekend Phil? Two rides sounds good - mainly as I dont have the skills to take the KTM on your trails as I need something a bit less boggy under the wheels!

I must admit I have missed the Friday night meal at the Awakino Pub knowing there is a whole flock of Adv bikes waiting under the clothes line....
And then of course knowing Whangamomona Pub / camp ground is waiting for Saturday night.
As Phil says still a bit wet for his trails but who is keen to go hunt out some tunnels, waterfalls, and gravel roads that are big bike suitable?
Reply here whether you want to experience all (or most....) that the Naki has to offer?
Colin are you out there?

Hi Mike, as you know i always like it dirty ( the dirtier the better ) but i think that the idea of another scenic ride around the taranaki tunnels would be great. :sunny:
I would be a starter for sure and now that Suki Girl has moved up from her DR200 to the DR650 lowrider she is keen to do more riding also.:scooter:
