Well my insurance has come thru and have been looking around for a replacement 600 Sports bike. I've seen a couple of R6's and planning to take some test rides this week.

Are there any known problems on R6's I should look out for ?

There are two I've seen, a 2000 and 2002 both with < 11km's.

Nothing specific but with a bike like that always make sure it`s got FSH and receipts for everything.Modern bikes are good but there are good owners and bad owners, look for things like non-standard paint or plastic(possibly binned),rounded off fastners e.t.c.It`s the simple stuff that gives it away, anyone who cant,or cant be bothered,to adjust and lube a chain properly isn`t the kind of person you want to buy a bike off of.Good solid bike, just take the usual precautions you would with any bike and you wont go far wrong.

If you do a bit of a search on the web you will find the odd mention of popping out of second gear etc for the 99-02 models. Use your noodle oops I mean google.

Just look out for lock wire on sump plug and other parts = Raced...

Gear box on my 2000 model was typical Yamaha , CRAP, however it never jumped out of any gears

Oh and get a damper fitted, they need it

The only problem with the R6 is that they are not as fast as an R1!!

Then again.. It depends on the rider I guess.
Happy riding dude!

*I* just do that with the angle grinder after I've finished giving my kneesliders that 'authentic' look.

Dammit, that reminds me. I must get out and sand off my chicken strips before anyone sees the new tyres.

With the little ride i had, they are a great bike, make sure you fit a 120/70 rather than the standard 120/60...

The only problem i had was, TANKSLAPPERS!!!! Get an aftermarket steering damper.... then it should be a sweet bike, with great midrange power and torque...

But ofcouse if you were a real man.... you would get a GIXXER :shifty:

Hahahaha  That reminds me...years ago when i first bought some leathers that had sliders...i went out and scraped em real good on the driveway to make em look 'authentic'...but i got the angle all wrong  my mates to this very day still give me shit   Till i go round the outside of them with the knee down

The YZFR6 has the worst front forks of all the 600's (cheap and nasty).
If you want to push the bike you will have to get them some new springs (ohlins) and a re-valve (Robert Taylor). This makes the bike ride about 200% better.
Also check the steering head bearings (or better still, get a good workshop to check them) to make sure they are tight (to specs.). This will help stop those nasty slappers.

i found the R6 to be a good bike. a bit flighty, but huge fun. I'm not aware of any major problems that they had & both myself & a mate had them.

there sweet, i think the gearboxs arnt the best but if you keep the chain lubed and dont go banging down gears you should be alright. someone said something about the front end being shite but i reckon my gixxer was worse. i just adjusted my mates one and its sweet as. although getting it re-valved etc and springs if need be im sure would make it better.

At what speed or how hard were you pushing it before the TANKSLAPPERS started appearing ?? I'll prolly take it easy to start with :innocent: Only just getting my back healed and all.

Thought about a GIXXER but cannot find a good one in my price range. I tried a 99 model which felt a little big for me. Had to stretch a bit more to reach the bars.

Haha, I seriously know someone who has done that. Had a GSX1400. Anyway he pointed out "how far he was leaning down to my dad", but he's a real nana rider through corners, nutter on the straights type character. And all my dads mate said was I wonder what grit he used.

Yeah, I was just going to say that. One of the guys had his bike in the shop getting "fixed" for at least a month and then it started crapping out again a few days after it was back in there. He got so sick of not having his bike that he bought a new one. The R6 was still under warrantee too (being '03). So evidently it can be a prob with '03 R6s but then again lots of people don't seem to have that prob at all. Put me off anyway.

I'm not entirely sure what was going on. There was some mention of "coils" and so my mate got his replaced but that didn't seems to solve the prob. It seems (just from what I've heard, which isn't heaps) that the prob is more that there is a prob and it's not quickly fixed. Remember these "rumours" only concern '03 R6s though.
