Sad to hear, all the best with your recovery!

Goggles? Gloves? Boots? Helmet maybe (providing it hasn't been stacked in)?

Got a mate getting into riding that could be keen, oh and I lost my goggles

Don't you dare sell your bike ali-s. Just ride a bit more cautiously. Put the pipe and slippers on TradeMe instead, and sell them to a doctor.

You have plenty more good high activity years left in you. You'll probably just go 'downhill' faster if you give it up now. Look at the age of some of those Olympic athletes. Female marathon winner was 38. A 70 year old man has even climbed Mt Everest. Be inspired. Doctors are soft golf players (and sport is not about small balls). The nerves that wire up the night tools are deep and well protected enough.

My doctor is giving me similar 'advice.' The 45 yr old vintage piece of meat I inhabit has a bingled up spine. Latest MRI scan is not a pretty picture (had one surgery already) but doing my best to ignore it along with (insert violin track here) the pain from nerve damage etc.
I can't face the idea of not riding, having just got back into it again. I've gotten more out of life this past year than all the 10 years before. The prospect of taking up golf instead just doesn't spin my prop, and in fact makes me feel ill.

My prescription: Bitch slap your doctor, buy the wife some flowers and reconsider your decision. At least give it one more year and see how you go. You'll be fine as long as you're careful.

For what it's worth..... I gave bikes away at 36 because of a banged up body (actually...come to think of it so was my wife.....with twins..:baby::baby: ) and now at 51 I'm back into it and enjoying myself heaps. I'm in terrible shape with stuffed knees, shoulder, dickey plumbing and I'm sure bits keep falling off, my Dr tells me I'm insane but that the exercise is good for me if I don't fall off (still working on that bit..) Although I can't really ride as I would like, I still get a kick out of hanging out at tracks, taking pics and supporting my kids riding, I will move into more club stuff, helping at race days etc. I don't regret selling up years ago and I certainly don't regret getting back into it. Riding isn't the only way to enjoy bikes....... Clubs need "ex-riders" to survive.......

Doctors don't like motorbikes ! I was told to give it up by DRs.Time heals, well it has for me as I have got back to riding after a break (literally) and enjoy the sport as much as ever. Hang on to some of your gear and just put bikes on hold til you are healthier.

Oh stuff it I'll admit it and join the old boys club!
I'm 50 and Mid life crisis is the best thing man! Enjoy buying all those toys while you can!!
Always had a road bike, but got back into mx, 2 or so years ago after 30 years!
Got screwed knees, a fucked neck from a 190k road bike accident a short while ago, unfit and I don't fancy the wife so often (dunno if its her or me) once every nights enough now "tui" and shit it hurts alot more and for a lot longer when you fall off. After 20 years of Karting I don't have the need to beat everyone anymore like the young fellas do, but life has a challenge weekends and something to make me go for walks/runs, do sit ups, and fiddle with in the garage to make it go more fasterer!

An afternoon fighting that bloody bucking bronco, with real blokes, not bloody new age wankers, in the mud, is pure bliss!!!
Theres only two things that would kill me now. If i woke up and it was soft or if I couldn't ride.

Ali buy a Ktm Exc, KLX300, DRZ or a thumper, Something with a bit of torque, then come play in the sandpit and do the Mr Motorcycles rides!!!

I'll get in on this.......i've just turned 40 and only started riding 18 months ago(had never ridden any type of bike before then)...i had a full hip replacement 14 years ago and my surgeon has given me his blessing.......just like Reckless i'm unfit, got dodgy knees, and about 4 years ago a digger bucket dropped on my ankle and smashed it to bits(i have as much titainium in my right leg as bone,haha)...just to add to the list.I wish i had got into bikes 20 years ago....I just cruise along at my own pace,The Mr Motorcycle rides rock and after a long time i'm finally getting used to riding in that sand at the Sandpit and enjoying it.......I mostly ride Sundays and can hardly move until about Wednesday and by Sunday i'm ready to roll again.......I've had a few tumbles and touch wood no injuries.......i'm just not mentally ready to join the slipper brigade just yet....my 2 cents for what it's worth

Hell yeah! I'm pushing 50 as well, rode trailies for years in my youth, got back into it ages ago when I bought a TT600, wife wouldnt let me ride it (then). Now I've got a klx300, wife's got a klx140, and 10 year old boy rides a crf80. Life is good. I totally sympathise with the 'sore until wednesday' feeling and being ready to rock on the weekend again. Nothing like being out in the dirt pushing your luck. Might as well dig a hole and get in it now if you sell it mate.
Keep that sweet wee bike, its a cool bit of kit and you are never to bloody old. Can you get your leg over it? Good. Done.
Rock on.
These things are a shot in the arm - too easy to slide into old age on your arse, I'd rather do it thru a bog hole on the back wheel!
Mmmmmm mud.

Shit I sound like you guys and I only turned 34 yesterday
Dont be so quick to give it in. Every time I end up in hospital the doctor just roll there eyes hehe. Not going to give it up till the day I cant actually get on the bike, I know I would regret it the first day I saw a bike on a trailer heading for a ride. So have a real hard think about what your giving up eh and then HTFU and get back on ya bike.

Hmm I can sympathise. I'm nearly 40, but unlike youse fellahs the only injury I've had requiring surgery was from playing football, and I got that fixed because it was interfering with my bike riding!

One of my mates commented on our last ride that I had the right attitude: thumb in a splint, wife 8 months pregnant with our first child, and I was out riding my bike. :Punk:

My chiropractor is another that says going out and banging my body about being active is far better than not. I take lots of knocks from mtb, climbing falls, caving, and the odd gravity attack on the KTMs. But interestingly he says the worst injuries are the ones caused by sitting in front of the computer for long hours.

Awsome responses guy's, and well put ...

Al, give yourself a bit of time to heal, become familiar with the fizzy-ology of your injury (cant spell it proper) and expressley work towards strengthing that part of your body over time.

Youll be itching to get back into it after 6 months or a year or so.

Sometimes a 'break' for a while is all you need to get those feelings and determination back...

Yeah, and all bikes must be governed so they will travel no faster than 25km/hr! :scooter:

20th August 2008, 17:47
Didn't you say you did it on a mtb? Why don't you sell that instead?

Seem to hurt myself more on mine, and every time I come off I get tangled in the bloody thing.

And they are not as good as dirt bikes.

I got back into dirt bikes at 36 I am 44 now and one broken wrist later all healed now. Carrying a few sports injuries. I am never going to give it up. I know guys in their 60's still going strong. The only thing that has changed is that I slowed down a lot since I was 18:laugh:=Mind you I am no where near as fit as I used to be and thats the key stay fit stay injury free, pretty hard as I now polish a seat.

I just got a road bike as well I've never given up the toys and never will I have lived in a permanent mid life crisis all my life an intend to keep doing so.

My advice stay with the sport, get fit and ride sedately.

I still don't know how I made it to 44:laugh:

Cheers

I am nearly 35 and you will be pleased to know it takes me until Tuesday to recover, so it must be about 1 day for every 10 years or so...
My boys are all into it (well , my 6 month old doesn't know it yet, but he will) and I can see we will have years of riding together, it is good to have things to do with your kids you are all into. It beats the hell out of Saturday cricket that is for sure..
I have a fairly 'intense' job, so nothing like getting out on the trails, acting like a hoon and throwing some dirt around. Despite a few scary moments, I reckon i will be riding for another 2 years, I wonder how the KTM will get any better, but who knows what bikes will look like in 2028 aye?
