View Full Version : 4stroke vs 2stroke petrol usage?

Hey!

We all must agree that one of the best reason for riding a bike is petrol cost, but I'm just real curious!

Just in general, how much would say 250 2stroke burn petrol compared to a 250 4stroke?

Closest thing I've heard is someone said that a 250 2stroke is like burning fuel from a 1000 4stroke! That sounds abit extreme...

But what ya'll think?

Bollocks! $20 will get you a easy 200ish km of thrashing.

Being a two-stroke you really need to thrash them as a matter of course.

Need to top up the oil every thousand k's or so, but that's not too expensive - and once you consider the 5,000km-ly engine oil changes on four-strokes it actually balances out nicely.

Mate, i'm lucky to get 50k's from $20. I think you mean 20k if you thrash it. Even my 125 drinks twice that easy. $2.00+ per ltr for fuel & $30ish per ltr for 2stroke oil at a ratio of 30/1. My CBR250 used about a tenth the amount of fuel, maby top's of a sixth but never any more than that. 4stroke 250's use a lot less fuel. I've had plenty of both 2stroke and 4stroke 250's and the result was the same for all.

Hay bud.
I don't know any one that rides 2stroke's becouse of fuel cost's. If you own a 2 stroke then you are not getting any fuel saving's, in fact, your fuel will be pooring out your exghust!!! 2strokes use extra fuel to cool the cylinder's down and so they must be run with a rich fuel mixture and you'll burn spark plug's to if you run it lean. A plug's cost $25.00 each so it works out cheeper to just run rich, and you'll get a better responce to. As far as oil go's, That stuff cost's the earth!!! and you should only use the oil injection, fully synthetic, knowen brand stuff like Castrol TTS/R2 which cost's around $30.00 per ltr or your just creating carbon and gonna destory your engine's life weather you pre-mix or not.
All my 4Stroke 250's where as cheep as chips to run. Back in the day i'dd get from Hamilton to Rotorua for about $5.00 on my CBR250 so if you do the math, thats about $13 today, vs my RGV250 which would cost around $45-50, yip it's thirsty.
ha ha ha, hope this help's a bit mate.

2 strokes thorw 60% of their fuel out the exhaust .....drink more fuel as the fire twice as often, develop more power. Once you throw in the cost of oil and shorter life of a 2 stroke engine . . . .

Four storke for economy, 2 stroke for power.

Cheers DCNZ! and every1 else =]
Thanks exactly the kinda answer i was looking for =P

Ive only ever had a rg150 2stroke, that ripped through petrol, but i thought it coulda been cus of its small engine and of me having to red line it constantly to go on the motorway.

I guess its a 2stroke thing then, i guess you pay the price for that kinda performance! =P

Every 5,000kms I do an oil change, like a 4stroke, But only for the gear box on my 2stroke's. The oil I use is called Spectro Fully Synthetic Gear Oil (should be getting discount's for all these plugs, ah ha ha) and cost's around $50.00 per ltr. I don't see a saving in Engine oil change's at all...

You must be a more "substantial" chap than my little 55kg self.

$30 a litre for two-smoke oil? You're getting ripped - it's only ~$40 for three litres of the good Castrol TT Super stuff, and that will last 3,000km.

My four-stroke 250 (A inline-four GSF250) drank the petrol much faster than the RZ does - was only getting 10-12km/L, 15 if I was lucky/on the motorway.

P.S where do you get your $150.00 engine oil from every 5,000kms change. There ripping you off!!!

$50 a bottle? I'm not getting ripped on the engine oil, you're getting ripped on your two-smoke oil! :buggerd:

Likewise. Back in the early 90s I had a derestricted NSR250. If I filled it up in Cashmere and took it to Akaroa (85km) I could get 8 litres of gas into it at Akaroa. Since it only had a 14 litre tank there was no way to make it there and back without refuelling somewhere. My R1 will go there and back on 12 litres.

I'm in the Waikato. Can you tell me who sell's the 3ltr bottle's for $40, I've only seen 1ltr or 4ltrs, I've been paying $100 for 4lts of fully synthetic TTS -(Peter Glidden Honda, Road and Sport Hamilton, Boyd Honda, all the moto shops in Morrinsville and everywhere else i've been in the Waikato)-, for 6 year's now. The waikato must be getting rip't, Damn!!! :)
Road and Sport Hamilton sold me -Spectro Heavy Duty Platinum Full Synthetic GL-1 SAE 75w140 gear box oil- last week for $47.75. No kidding.
Oh, and I only weigh 60kg's but i've been thrashing 2strokes for year's and none of my bike's have ever missed a beat, except for a fould plug or exghust leek once in a blue moon. Just run'em rich and hold'em open. ;)

Yep, I had an ex-racing pepsi replica RGV250 as my first ever road bike, didn't realise what a weapon it was when I bought it for $2g. It used 10l/100km, or the same as my 2.2litre Honda Prelude car, and similar to a 1000cc 4stroke, maybe slightly more. Plus it was a bitch to keep it running.

CBR250RR is slightly slower, but reliable, easier to ride, more comfortable and gets 5l/100km and a good rider on a cbr will beat an average rider on an RGV easily on the track. Then again two equally good riders the RGV will win easily.

I reckon an RGV250 is marginally better than a VFR400 on the track... marginally. VFR will also use only about 5l/100km, and is also reliable, and also beautiful and sounds great. The 2 strokes sound like lawnmowers.

I totally agree VTEC, my RG125 whips all my mates 250 4strokes but i've been riding for longer and i'm far better.
I had NSR rims on my CBR which where wider than the std ones, 160 rear tyre, 120 front. None of my other 250 (2 or 4stroke) have handeled quite as well but my rgv will do 50kph more top speed. RGV's are weapons alright, I have no problem blowing off VFR400's. I can ditch most Harly Davidsons provided there aint any big straight's for them to get away.
The 1,000cc jappers thou', I cant even touch. Now they are fast.
My brother has a 2ltr turbo subaru. It cost him as much as it cost me to go on a trip togeather to a mates an hour away. We traveled togeather at the same speed'ish and went the same way. 2strokes cost more to run than 4strokes :niceone:

Sorry to quibble, but that's not quite true. I mean, I'm sure the extra fuel that goes through a 2-stroke does cool the cylinders, but the fundamental reason 2-strokes use extra fuel is that quite a lot (20-30%) of the fuel that comes in through the inlet ports goes straight out the exhaust ports without being burned. This is why 2-strokes are heavy on fuel and this is why their hydrocarbon emissions are very high. It could be avoided with direct fuel injection, but, for various reasons, there are no direct-injection 2-stroke motorcycle engines currently in production.

The RG150 isn't that bad on fuel at all.

10$ gives me 100km if i push it, so thats 20km/l at these prices

My RZ250LC has a 15l tank, so $30, and I get a fairly constant 275km per tank.

I was originally buying a 4 stroke 250 for the economy of commuting on it, but one ride on the 2T had me hooked!

my aprilia if ridden at the speed limit can get 250-300km from a tank, I normally get about 150km before I fuel up,
at a taupo track day I got 110km before I ran dry
Ive also burnt a whole tank in 90km but that was 6th gear throttle pinned from auckland to whangarei early in the morning
the best oil to use is castrol tts and is about 25-28 bucks a litre
4 stroke = economy 2 stroke = fun thrashing

My old 2 strokes, a Suzuki VJ22 and an Aprillia RS250 guzzled gas like it was beer! 150 - 200km MAX on a tank and then there is the premuim grade oil at over $20/L!

They are not cheap to run, like a rotary, and a 2 stroke owner really doesn't give a damn anyway. All he or she cares about is keeping the tacho near the red and the clutch covered for when and not if...

Well, your tank size would be ~ 12-15 l, I should think, but perhaps you're not filling it. Let's say 20 l for 102.8 km, that would be around 5 km/l. What are you doing to the poor wee thing?

Wonder what the nsr250 will suck up once i've got it up and going. I've all but run outta gas going chch to kaikoura on the RG150 topped to the brim before leaving chch with both oil and gas.

Rolled to a halt not far past parnassus, onto reserve lots of swearing and nannying and it rolled into BP Kaikoura with not a drop to spare, I know - I looked. :scooter: Fookin oil light came on during the return trip as I was riding home thru bishopdale too, 1L of oil! couldn't believe it. When there's a massive power station just out my window burning coal all day long to give us all power, and we don't see the multimillion dollar Power corporations shutting them down any time soon, I don't think a little 250cc bike is gonna make all the difference.
